hi friends.
as many said batting powerplay has indeed became a major headache for the batting team.
in india england match,we saw collapses during both teams batting powerplay.
just yesterday, india lost the plot during powerplay when just the over before powerplay yielded 10 runs.
if you wanna take the powerplay,do it before the 25th over.
in england match, they were a minimum 30 runs short.
in yesterday's match, they are almost 80 runs short.

No its not like that if it is so then see newzealand team how brilliantly Ross taylor used the batting powerplay...It is only useful when anyone plays sensibly in this situation..power play means not hitting the every out of the park but also rotate the strikes so one who uses power play sensibly he will get definitely benefit from that..

i dont think it was ross taylor who used powerplay to best effect but it was pakistani bowlers who gave him low full tosses which enabled him to hit massive sixes . he hit 4 out of 6 sixes on full tossed balls.

thats why i said india shouldn't take the batting powerplay.
it doesn't mean you have to hit all 30 balls to boundaries and sixes.
thats the trick the indians missed.
either that or afraid that they wont even reach the average nagpur score of 316.
by the way,are you talking about the game where the pakstan bowlers forgot to pitch the bals and yielded almost 100 runs in 5 overs?

i dont think powerplay was responsible for india team fall but the time the powerplay was taken was wrong & the batting order infact was very poor . its not about power hitting in powerplay you can still get 50 runs or more by playing sensible ckt.

I think what we have seen in this world cup is that Power plays are twin edged swords. It has fired for teams like Ireland and West Indies, when big hitters like Kevin O Brien and Pollard cashed in. But for other teams such as England and India, the powerplay has worked the other way around as these teams have lost too many wickets chasing too many runs.
So it has brought a nice new dimension to the game.
Cheers!

may be we culd add the bad timing of powerplay as one of the reason for defeat but team india lost the plot wen new batsman thot they culd hit hard sixes as fast as they enter the field. they shuld hav taken ones and two's more often and frequently! may be another 10-12 runs culd hav made the diff but everything is done now and we hav to go with the result..! :(

Indian team has missed a simple trick, if your top three batsman have given you a brilliant start like we got against England and SA there is no need to slog when you are in .May be our middle order player thought that our top three is making the batting looks ridiculously easy so the pitch is flat and bowling is poor , hence go and slog every ball for six.Like Ravi shastri said in last match India should have taken powerplay when Tendulkar and Sehwag were going after SA bowling .They were down that time so surely India would have got 40-50 runs .Also in that case they would have got 3-4 overs of Dale Steyn less.

Hi dear, you have started really a nice discussion.Batting powerplays is best weapon given to batting side by ICC.The aim is to provide equal apportunity to score more runs as expected by spectators.Indian team had failed to utilise batting powerplays in last few games since most of players started to play the riski shots in air.I really don't understand why they just play some normal cricketing shots and wait for bad deliveries for heating after all it is poweplay and not freehits.
Happy mylotting

Really, if they had not taken the batting power play things could have been different.
Dhoni would not hear you. What he feels like he would do. So no use wasting your advices.

I agree with stardust, Team India should avoid taking batting power play. It has proved disastrous for the team right from South Africa tour I think. I don't understand why they did not 5take power play immediately after the balling power play that was in the sixteenth over. At that time even if there was a problem team could have recovered but taking the power play during last stage players can not but speed up the innings and get in the problem.

I guess the time to take batting powerplay will remain a controversial question. Whenever the captain takes a powerplay, all that is required is a little sensibility. A powerplay that earns 35/0 is much better than one that gives you 45/4. It is not necessary to just go big suring a powerplay. Generally captains take powerplay during 40-41st over. But they should also remember that they still have to play the 4 overs post powerplay, and some hitting is required in that stage too.

i would say that batting power play would be good if you take it by the 25th over that will ease out the pressure of scoring quickly they will have our well set openers or the middle order batsman who will have enough time to settle down and play out the overs with little or now pressure at all. but dhoni is dhoni he some times ceases to amaze me because of his stubborn attitude although he is pretty flexible.so hopefully he will rethink his strategy and probably he should now bring in raina and ashwin somehow vacate a place for them may be even sreeshant although he has is reservation to sreesanth but he got to remember that he is some kind of luck mascot for india so he may work wonders.
