Do you countries should continue to build nuclear power plants?

With what is happening in nuclear power-dependent Japan, do you think countries should continue to tap nuclear power plants for electricity and energy?

No, the risks outweigh the benefit all the best urban

Then quit using electricity altogether because all viable means of energy production have been more deadly than nuclear. Quit driving cars too.

Countries should think twice in building nuclear reactors. Although nuclear power is cheaper the possible consequences it will bring forth like what it happening in Japan is a wake up call. Countries now have sophisticated ways of predicting nature but it still not enough to avoid nature's wrath. Not unless we can fully develop sun and wind energy, nuclear power is still the easy choice compared to fossil fuel. It's just a matter of choosing the lesser evil. If ever a nuclear plant is to be constructed it should be in a place where an earthquake is less likely to occur.

Yes I agree. Nuclear power may be considered by many as relatively safe but the appropriateness of having nuclear power plant depends really on where you will build it. In my country, it is dangerous not only because of the location (we have several fault lines) but also sadly because of the threat of corruption of some which may result in substandard nuclear power plants which is more dangerous than earthquakes.

cebumd, I believe that until we can find a more consistent and cheaper means of producing energy building nuclear power plants will be inevitable, especially for high energy consumption countries like America, China, Japan, Russia - just to name a few. While it is a fact that there are potential radiation risks but if you look around we are actually expose to many various of radiation in our daily lives. I am sure these plants are being well built and closely monitored by both the local and international atomic energy agencies. High energy consumption countries just do not have a choice as far as going nuclear for energy is concern.

No, they are too dangerous. If an earthquake hits close to a nuclear power station, it could become a huge disaster. We should continue to develop wind, solar, and electric energy, especially solar and wind.

I don't think it's practical to build those. We should just resort to a more environment-friendly and less hazardous approach.

Absolutely! They are still the safest viable means of energy production.

Hi Cebumd, I think for countries with large tract of unused land, and with no threat of earthquake or other powerful natural disasters, they should build more nuclear plants. It is better than relying on oil, since oil price keeps going up. I think it is rare for a country to experience 8.9 magnitude earthquake, followed by terrifying tsunami to destroy the nuclear power plants. Just hope that Japan can get things under control.

What happened in Japan is due to a natural disaster. This is unlike what had happened in Chernobyl. Nuclear power is cleaner than the traditional coal and oil. Of course there is the option of natural gas. Unless someone comes out with a safer method to generate power, nuclear is the only one to turn to now.

The nuclear power plant waste takes a lot of time to decompose and so pile of waste emits radiation that affects health of the people and the environment, imbalance occurs in the situation of earth and atmosphere ; and this imparts one of the effects of global warming therefore look for other means of producing energy and stop the use of nuclear power plant. In our country - the Philippines, this is a continuous debate.
