Yesterday, i kept thinking it would be nice to have some new books to listen to on my stereo while laying in bed or just doing things in my bedroom. So i went to ebay because you can hardly find any on any other sites these days except audio dot com and its so expensive. I found 15 audio books for only 10 bucks and it said the seller would calculate the postage. Now, im wondering if the sellers are just adding a BUNCH of postage or paypal charged a lot or if it was Ebay? so it all came to 23 dollars plus...
Now ive learned my lesson. that was way to much for not even knowing what ones they were. could be a lot ive already had.
so what do you think it was? are these 2 places getting to big for their britches?
or am i just being cheap?

I never do anything through ebay, although my daughter is very fond of it. I go to a used book site, Alibris, I think, they will combine postage IF you are buying from the same seller. I have been happy with them. But I know you have to be careful what your doing because the shipping is something like $3 or 4 per item. But if the second item is from the same seller then it drops. Maybe that information will help you. the other sites I looked at didn't adjust the shipping regardless if the seller was the same. The shipping is what really gets to you. I had some books one time that I wanted and the shipping was so high that I spent a day playing with it and cut it way down. I know how you feel and No I don't think you are being cheap and yes I think these big companies can't fit in their britches anymore~

This was not ebay or paypal - this was the seller!
Ebay charges the seller a small percentage of the final sale price. Paypal charges the seller a small percentage of the total amount transferred.
Many sellers charge ridiculous shipping amounts and very low prices because they can reduce how much ebay keeps. Examples include selling an item for 99 cents and charging $30 for the shipping.
This problem has been reduced though and you can help identify this sell when you leave your feedback. When you leave feedback, give him a VERY LOW rating on the shipping cost. This hurts the seller and many of the sellers have started to change their ways because of this. Low ratings mean fewer sales and can mean that ebay will charge them more to list their items.
I buy a lot of things on ebay; but, I never buy an item that does not clearly state how much the shipping and handling is right up front.
Obviously, inexpensive but heavy items will cost more to ship; but, I always compare the total price (cost of item plus shippinbg and handling) when I decide to make a purchase.
Also, you said the total cost was "23 dollars plus" for 15 audio books. Even if the total was $24 that is still less than $2 per audio book! That is not a bad deal!

I wanted to order a pen fro someone once. It was an old fountain pen. Nothing all that special, but I liked it. He wanted some astronomical price for shipping and wouldn't allow me to pick it up. The 2 hour bus trip would have been less than the shipping. I can see adding $5 for going to the post office, but 30? I didn't buy it.

NEVER pay before you know the TOTAL price of the purchase. Ebay is FAMOUS for jacking up the "postage" to make more money as htey don't have to pay a final value fee on postage...just the price of the item. I stopped Ebay long ago for this reason. I'd see things for a buck....but then postage was $14.95 or something like that when I knew it'd only be $4.95 via USPS priority mail! Granted, I as the buyer don't care where the money/fees come or go, if I want to pay $15.95 for the time, I will..but it made me think less of the seller. If they are going to cheat Ebay...why should I not think they will cheat me? Will the seller be honest with me\ while being dishonest with Ebay and Paypal?
It isn't Ebay or PayPal doing this...it is the seller.
But most definately...if postage is not stated in the auction... I would contact the seller and ask what it is and go from there. If the seller says "I don't know yet" then I'd not be placing my bid there. In your case... I think the seller jacked up the postage to make more money without Ebay or PayPal knowing it. Ebay fees are on the actual final purchase/bid price. Can't get around that...they will charge the seller that. Paypal was like 2.9% per TOTAL transaction, plus 35 cents transaction fee...so postage is also included in the calcuations for final fee with PayPal as that money is included in the monies transacted between you and PayPal and the seller.
So the only way for the seller to get more money from a sale without having to pay more fees...is to jack up the postage. They have to pay for it with PayPal, but not with Ebay.

If I remember right, I was just about to buy stock in PayPal as it went public and then Ebay bought PayPal and I didn't get to buy any. Something like that...ebay owns PayPal.

On eBay there should be a place where you can calculate the shipping yourself. When I sell I set the option so the buyer can check, I put in the weight, etc. and they can input their zip code to see how much it is on USPS, UPS, etc. You didn't have that option?
He or she can send those books at media rate for just a few dollars. It's slower than normal but you should get them within a week.
Go back and email the seller and maybe eBay, too. Tell the seller the shipping is exorbitant and you don't want the merchandise.

I would NOT rate them ok!! I would rate them low regarding shipping costs and state that they do not respond promptly to emails. Wait a day or so before you rate them and see if they reply, unless you've done so already. It's not fair to the other buyers--you could keep them from going through what you have!

To charge over $13 for postage and handling sure sounds like a rip-off to me! Have you checked your local library? Ours has free downloads for ebooks, as well as a large selection of books on cd's. Many libraries even deliver if you can't get out, and even better, you can reserve them online. Check it out, you'll probably be surprised.

Sellers on ebay charge what they want for shipping. I think most sellers try to be fair. Shipping is high all over, its surprising how much it really does cost to ship something. As for the seller calculating the shipping, they should tell you what it will be, and then you can decide if you still want the items. When it says ebay will calculate the shipping, it goes by the weight, the size of the package and the zip code. I am a seller on ebay, I do my best to keep my shipping cost down. Lots of times I don't charge enough to cover the whole cost of shipping. As for charging $23 for shipping audio books, that is high, but if you add up the total cost of the item plus shipping, did you get a good deal. Ebay sellers are charged final value fees on the cost of the item. some sellers charge more for shipping and keep the cost of the item low. you just have to add up both together and decide then if you want the item. I have been selling and buying on ebay for years, have also been using paypal. To me both sites are great.

No I am not saying you can back out of the transaction. You can ask the seller before the end of the auction what the shipping would be. You can give them your zip code and then they should be able to provide you with the shipping cost. Good luck with your next purchase on ebay.

Thats happened to me a couple times, but its not paypal or ebay's fault, they don't have anything to do with shipping charges, its the seller's that charge shipping, and apparently they can charge whatever they want. Now there are some seller's on there that don't do that to people they are reasonable, but there's some that just want money and they will overcharge you on shipping if they can.

I don't think u are being cheap at all. the postage on ebay stuff is awful. When i sold on ebay i was ashamed to tell them how much it came to & i only charged what i had to. I quit fooling w/ebay after i sold my antique store. I hear it has changed up alot. It's more hassle to seel on there than people realize. I hope u get some good books. U might try talking to the seller. Don't know whether it would do any good or not.

Have you tried http://www.bookdepository.com NOT a referral link They have free world wide shipping. I have a few friends who love to buy from them. I may try them because shipping to my country is really expensive. There are also other places where you can download free books that the copyright has expired. Of course if you are visually impaired the library for the blind sends books out for free.

I am a brand new seller on ebay and gee your discussion reminds me of how so cheap and fair I am.
To date I only charge flat rate and will only ship to US. I know that ebay allows us to up the handling charge which is worked into the shipping charge but I figured if I want to do it for a while to come I better be fair.
So far working great for me, but I can see how unfair your charge is, I do not think you are being cheap at all. I saw the other an item to buy upfront for 99cents but yet the shipping is $100 and funny thing is that I actually could go pick it up because the seller is in my home town. So wow and so sad that some people do this.
I am not sure, being so new to ebay but I think you can appeal this with ebay, although part of my thinking is that maybe the part where it says seller will work out shipping leads me to believe that it is like a binding agreement. So anytime if ever I decide to buy on ebay I will stick with the upfront knowledge of knowing the shipping charge first.
I do hope you can somehow be compensated for this. ![](/Content/images/emotes/hugs.gif)

some people that sell stuff on ebay gives you the right to choose the shipping because I was looking to buy a cb from there and when i checked the shipping it gave you a choice I think it depends on the seller.

Never ever let the Sellers work out the Shipping after you have ordered always make sure what the Shipping costs are, it is not Paypal that has ripped you of it is the Seller that has gone a bit far here
So in future make sure you know the full cost before you order and Pay

I will never bid on anything not knowing what the shipping charges are, because unfortunately people can do that. I think they try to earn more money off you by upping the shipping to far more than it needs to be. I don't believe Paypal had anything to do with it.. or even E-Bay. Personally I'd blame the seller and learn a lesson to never bid on anything again that doesn't have clear shipping prices.

This really is a big pain for people who kind of go to Ebay for regular purchasing. Recently I was there to buy a PS 3 for my younger brother. The rate was around $156. So I thought that's not a bad deal at all. But after adding the postage charges extra, it all came up to $197. That was way too much as for that kind of a thing. So it really is getting on to people's nerve but still that much we have to bear as no one will pay the postage charge on our behalf. What I feel is actually there should be terms and conditions for the people to offer there to others, this will ensure that no further discrimination is done to other who come there to buy....

Hi Bunnybon,
No you are definitely not being cheap. Your money is hard-earned and the seller on e bay took the money for the books on the postage. E-bay has got a good name and I think that if you complain, that particular seller will be black listed-I'm sure.
Now a days, very few merchants are not thieves. Here-in Kolkata(India) we have got a expensive shirts, jeans etc called KOUTONS. There is a showroom near my flat and one day-I was surprised to see posters saying that 82% discount is being given. Well-I did smell a rat and was not surprised to find that everything is so overpriced that even after 82% discount, what you get is available at the same price or less.
At least, few decades back, you could identify a thief or a brigand. But now-a-days we do not have that luxury..lol
