How do you react when some people spell your name wrongly?

My name is so unique that people often spell it with horrific results... Today, i just received a small token and was so happy to bring it out from its box, only to be dismayed by the fact that the engraved letterings were funnier than the one they gave me from a hospital a few months back...
i had mixed feelings...happy and indifferent...happy for the token, but indifferent for the spelling of my name.
to top it off, the person who gave me stood there for ...."ages..." ... and so i just, did my best to smile as normal as smile is... :}
what would you do when it happened to you? don't forget that the giver is still there smiling.

my name too is unique and i can say..it's rare...everytime i get to introduce myself to people or if i'm doing some transactions, i always present my ID to make people aware of how it is spelled and of course! they could use my ID as spelling guide. it's crazy! some can't just read or maybe they really prefer their ways of spelling my name instead of following the right one. there are some people that still spell my name incorrectly even if they are already looking at my ID to copy the spelling...yeah, i don't know what's with those fellaz.
I really make sure every people I met or had done important transactions with spelled my name correctly and i always say to evryone that I met that I'm open for questions if they are confused about the spelling. It's important to me that my name is always spelled correctly. So, they's better not hesitate to ask me for the correct spelling than just following their own guts and misspell my name. I find it annoying at some times. Don't really like seeing my name misspelled. And if someone does, I really correct him/her right aware. Making him aware of the spelling.Sometimes I give a small card with my name on it and how it is pronounced.
My name's not just commonly misspelled, it's also commonly mispronounced. Too bad.

some people spell names phonetically, committing some errors in doing so. I guess this is where peole should stop listening and start looking...and thinking too. :P

i know what you mean, i had similar experiences especially with my last name. my name is also mispelled...mine is "javelyn" usually they spell it with an "i" instead of y..but i guess that was understandable since they are used to remembering the olympic sport for my name haha i wont mention my last name since it is really hard to remember and pronounce as well..

I am married and my new name (my husband's name) is a very common name that people are able to spell wihtout any problems. That is nice, because I don't have to spell it and repeat it. My old name was quite unusual and people often misunderstood it or misspelled it. Sometimes it made me laugh when I saw the way that people spelled it because it sounded very funny, but I also found it a little annoying that I always had to spell my name. People from my own country found it hard to spell it, and my international friends found it even harder to pronounce it, because some of the sounds only exist in my own country.

cultural barrier...that happens too in my country, inside each city, and in the sitios in the districts of each province. Philippines have more than 108 sublanguages, dialects and idiolects in all so one would expect that spelling and sound problems would follow :)

My name is actually spelled wrong to begin with and although some can actually add to it to butcher it even more it does not bother me so much.
What does bother me is that I will enter my name on something like a document and some feel the need to x out some of my letters as if I did not know how to spell my own name. Now that friend bothers me.

Hi there!
Actually,it really doesn't bother me at all if someone mispelled my name, lol! Infact, just today, somebody mispelled it,lol! But I always think that it is just a typographic error, hehe! I understand why sometimes it happens as sometimes I accidentally mispelled other's name too.
See yah!

Like you my name is unique, it popular in world, but not in my country. People are often confused with which letter ending my name, my name letter with "e", but people want say "a". Very often people do not believe that this is my real name, then I show my passport or drivers license Me childhood not liking my name, but now I love it.

Hi,
Sometimes, people may tend to write my name
wrongly, but I don't really take it into my heart.
Then I will tell the person my name and spell out for
him/her.
There was once I was getting angry because my name was written
wrongly on my wedding board stage. there is a missing of one letter
from my name and it was displayed on my wedding day.
I make a complaint to the hotel management ,but only get an apologize
from the manager. How can they make such mistake on my name.

like the misspelled name by the boyfriend, that too, is ridiculous; happening on your wedding day... they have to teach their personnel to be careful....really careful with those special things...it means a lot. : [

I have had people mispronounce and misspell my name all my life. i am used to it by now. when i was in school it used to annoy me especially when i would let the teacher know they were spelling my name wrong and they would just repeat the mistake. I guess there are worse things to happen in life than to have your name spelled wrong.

My name ends with an 'e' but there are so many who add a 'y' there. Grrrrrrrr. No matter how many times I correct them they will continue doing it. What can't be cured has to be endured as they say and so I tolerate it for my good health. It also happens that my bungalow name has been concocted. I have such a pretty name but that will not be mentioned while giving directions to new comers.

i don't get it too when people try to be more eager to show off their spelling prowess when it comes to names...teachers often misppell names during the first days of school, but they do their best to correct it in the earliest time... :P

I have a unique surname, although - as a word in everyday useage - it's remarkably common. But because people find it difficult to believe that it is actually my surname, they're always adding a letter or two. It does get quite annoying, at times, as people have the audacity to question how it is spelled. I do know how to spell my own name, afterall.

My name is not that unique. But even if that's the case I still have trouble with people spelling it wrong. They would either spell it with an 'h' or add another 's' or an 'r'. I dont really mind it though if it's just the simple things but when it comes to things that is important like a certificate or something similar, of course I will double check to see if they spelled my name correctly.
There are names that are really hard to spell. In your situation, I don't think I will be mad. I think that she sincerely did not know and she seem friendly enough so I would not care. Try to write your name next time ;p.

i will paste it on 'his' clipboard.
we have a unified system there at work and we usually see each other's name when we send mails or prompts...perhaps he forgot to have look before having my name engraved. :}

Actually I don't mind them and it's kinda cute lol. The thing that will surprise me is when people spell my name correctly. I have kind of a different name and people usually misspell it and mispronounce it too lol.

different, like sinner? if your name is syner and will be spelled as sinner, won't you be offended? that's double redundant!
anyway, i got used to it, but to receive a long lasting gift with that problem is something, more if people expect that you should put it on top of your cupboard. :C

I am a very considerate person... You need to know if the person mispelled your name intentionally do it or not.. Sometimes, if people belong to another race/culture/country/places, they might not know how to spell it and even pronounce it.. It really depends on the person who did... It also depends whether mispelling your name had a lot of effects to you like on applications and registrations.. Then that's a different story..

I dont mind at all if someone spells my name wrong I just smile. My name isnt hard at all to spell.. Shannon... so it doesnt get misspelled very often. That would be awful though if someone made you something really nice and the spelling of the name was wrong you wouldnt want to display it.

Hi. asiamooner. I would have accepted the gift. If I am still bothered by the fact of how they misspelled my name. I would send them a "Thank You" card, and where it says, From: I would spell my name the correct way of how it was supposed to be spelled. When they look at this card, they will have seen how I really spell my name versus how they have spelled it themselves.

i sometimes do that, make fun of them...especially with kids or younger people...then befriend them afterwards so they won't feel so embarrassed for their mistake... :)
