There was this mesage telling everyone (in the Philippines, I think it was spread nationwide). Even I got one, it was sent to me 4 times by my friends and some relatives got the same message who were a thousand kms away.. It goes a bit like this: yesterday, a nuclear powerplant in Japan leaked/exploded, so starting today at 4 pm, radiation will spread to Phils. and cause skin burning and cancer. And rain also brings radiation so don't go out of the house and lock the windows, don't get wet or you'll get sick... Many were really alarmed since it was a school day.. People who have nothing else to do should not spread alarming chain messages like these.

I know this text message and it turns out to be a bogus. There was no official announcement given by the government and the Department of Health prior to the spread of the text messages. It was too late when the DOH and the government had given the announcement of the radiation not being in effect after some classes were suspended. But who would they blame right? The parents received numerous text messages and the best thing that the government and the media would've done is to keep the Filipino updated in all aspects with regards to the effects of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. I heard that Deped got kind of angry at some schools because they suspended the classes without any rightful information.

I'm not lucky enough yesterday, I did not received any text messages re: acid rain/radiation. If ever I got a messages like that, I won't delete immediately and I will not pass to anyone cause I already knew that is a fake. I will rely only in internet or radio or television.
The DepEd has the right to be angry to some of the schools who suspended their classes, they are not using their minds, maybe the school officials is avoiding the blames from the parents of the students if that happen.
Text or without text, the best way we can do is to pray for our country, the safety of all Filipinos, all the foreigner residing here.
Hoping for the best of the Philippines and our safety plus the safety of other countries.

Hello Stanley,
The reason why such bogus text messages exist is because they can't be detected. much like to text scams that says you won a jackpot crap like that or people texting they are your relatives from another country asking for money or they're sim is roaming.. if such technology of detecting them is created, it wouldn't exist any more.

Good day LetranKnight25,
Yes, your right we don't have the capability to trace or detect who sent this messages. Our technology is not modern enough like our western neighbor. What we can do when this happen in the future is to remain calm, tune in the radio or watch TV or the internet for updated news.thanks

My husband is a nuclear engineer in one nuclear plantation in Germany. Her work for almost 10 years and last 2005,he got color blind due to the work he is in.He is stress for almost 2 days now of the situation in Japan and 5 government engineers have been sent to japan.I did not let him.He said it's possible that it the wind will be here or somewhere in california, canada or hawaii but this will depend in the air movement. It's indeed alarming but we are experiencing the most scariest thing that's happening. He told me last night to buy fresh milk and iodine for earlier protection.People can't say it's not true as we know what can nuclear radiation give us.We've seen what happen so I think it's better to take care right? The text messages however is too much.Just hoping that the air movement will change time to time.

Hello insulin,
So your husband is a nuclear engineer and as you have said once work in a nuclear plantation. Now he is color blind, maybe that's the effect of being exposed to radiation. The incident in Japan as what the news have stated that the wind direction is pointing to Hawaii and they also said that it's too far to be affected too, but this text messages motives are to scare people. So if this happens again let's remain calm and rely only reliable news.thanks for your time.

This was really crazy! I am thankful that I was not able to receive this kind of text from anyone of my family, relatives and friends. But then my Mom called me regarding this matter and she believes so that is why she asked me to watch the news in CNN and especially BBC news because it was stated that it became to BBC flash news. I can't deny the fact that I was alarmed as well but using my common sense I am having doubts as well knowing that we are too far away from Japan that is in between of the big sea. If that is the case then for sure the whole country of Japan is in dangerous situation before it will go to our country. So it is lesson learned to all of us that in case we are going to receive a messages like that when in times of disaster we have to take note of the term "PLEASE PASS" when it comes to text messages because of sure it came from people that are connected to the communication network it can be from the prepaid network, of course obviously it is part of modus operandi. Another thing is that we must call the hotline of the authorities to clarify this matter we can also call the broadcasting network to make sure if the text message is reliable.
It is not actually the radiation from nuclear power plant that was spread to the Philippines last Monday but the radiation of modus operandi, power tripping, foolishness or tricking the people.

Yes some people do think that it came from the networks, but what can they gain in doing such a thing more earnings for them I doubt it.I know they are more intelligent than that, spreading text messages to create confusions, panic to their own countrymen its not a good timing because our country have enough problems to deal with and now this one.Lets just pray for our country and her people to be safe always.thanks.

I have received that same message too. And even if I was not sure if it was true, I still took the precautions. Coincidentally, in our place it did rain around 4 PM which led me more to believe that it was for real. It's a good thing the news confirmed that the chain text message was a hoax.

When I received that message, I know it's just a joke because why so soon and there's no news bulletin about it.The first to know that is our government and before they could give information, proper confirmation is needed before it goes public. We have been experiencing this many times sent by people who had nothing to do to but scare people.

Yeah, it could be possible that it came from the telecom company. But what will they gain in doing that to increase their earnings, they have done that already(3 players competing with each other)through promos. And they are too intelligent to even think of spreading those text messages just to scare people.thanks again ichipink...

I was also listening to the radio that time. I was actually waiting for some announcements to confirm that message.
I get irritated by this kind of people. Some say that the culprit might be an insider from the telecommunications company. They said that the companies might have initiated this to make additional income out of people's texts. I think that it's nonsense.

DOST already announced those messages are not true so we should not dwell on them anymore. Instead, concerned authorities should work to make sure we are better prepared in case a big earthquake hits out country.

Good suggestion ichipink, since our country has many faults DOST with the help of local officials should start conducting seminars on what to do in case this happens.I hope the (ningas cogon) habit of some of our officials would be set aside.

But I guess the text messages made it first before the pronouncement was made by the authorities. What we must do as you have said is to be prepared at all times for any eventualities and always remain calm in case of emergencies.thanks...

I think DOST should also start seminars, especially in earthquake/tsunami prone areas, about what to do when this kind of calamities occur. Since not all the people are knowledgeable (not every has TVs, radios, or PCs), DOST should be the one to provide these to them.

Fortunately I haven't received such kind of text messages. Well, I have seen in the news that Philippines is far from Japan's radiation leak considering the gap between the two countries and this was assured by the DOST and even Japan's government itself.. I suggest you have to be updated with the news so you wont' be alarmed by these kinds of text messages.

Yes,its really insane sending this text messages and they have also given the facts, time and the antidote just to deter its effects on people. They have really done their job before spreading it.The best way we can do is to remain calm and wait for updated news or confirmation.thanks...

Yeah even PUP president got it and declared to suspend the classes which brought him on a bad note after not inquiring first with the authorized person to speak on this matter. I think who benefited much from this hoax is the cellphone companies that got a lot of this spreading around. I think that there should be some kind of mechanism that when text messages like this should be stopped by the networks operators if the text is deemed to be hoax. But I guess they would not do that since they would lose a lot of money from this if they stopped this hoax from spreading.

Well, some said they are the ones who spread these messages but I don't think its right to pinpoint on them. These were done by persons who have nothing to do or are happy to bring confusions to people and I don't think these networks have the capability to locate or pinpoint where it started. Thanks

yeah it spread as far as in sarangani province =).
we received messages in our phones telling us to stay indoors when rain comes during a certain period. It was alarming for some but for my own point of view, i doubt it since the blow of wind is always westward or northward.
this chain messages are a big deal for me as it cause delay in economic activities for some who believed in it.

Yeah, its really crazy receiving such messages with no basis. Some people are really cruel sometimes, they haven't taught what will be the effects of what they have done to most people. One thing for sure it's a joke.So we should always remain calm if ever another hoax comes around.thanks.

I also got this text message..it really amazed me that this has reached the entire country. I was a bit scared though because I was at school and in PE class(open space) when I got the message, and it was raining a bit for the past days. Fortunately, it was just a prank, a false text..I really hate people who make up such things that can really harm others.

Completely a shame how people do such, I mean with the increasing foolishness of this kind of nonsense will deter people from actually believing an actual real alert. I wonder if a text message like that can be reported and traced?
Would be nice if they could so that the senders would get some kind of punishment or to say the least warning.

That chain letter too was sent to my in laws who get frantic when they received it. But as they listen to the news they found out that it was not true.
Some people could really get so cruel. They try to scare people by sending those messages. But i guess, the people who receive such hoax messages should also be discerning so as to be able to know whether the text is plausible or not.

Yes, some even treats it to be possible because we're near Japan. One school even let their students to go home because their parents are in worried. To the rescue are the news bulletin from DOST denying the possibility.
The best way we could do if again this happens is to remain calm tune in for verified updated news.thanks for the lines...

I have seen in ABS CBN that Classes in Polytechnic University of the Philippines were cancelled due to the text messages that were spread across the Philippines. I don't know if it's really true, but I'm really scared of catching radiation. Our genes would mutate but it has no positive effects like superhuman strength like that in Fantastic Four. Cancer is a very deadly disease so people got panic. Classes in some universities were not cancelled .

lolz.. Superhuman powers huh.. If that would only be possible, I would have tried to expose myself to radiation. On the other hand, maybe I'll still have doubts. Part of me is too scared to get cancer. heheh..

Yeah, its really scary.Imagine getting sick without a known cure. And this superhuman power like we've seen in movies even if it's true, never mind I'll pass if such power is due to radiation. And this text messages to scare people is really a bad joke.thanks

Well it is true that another nuclear plant from Japan has exploded as well. But then. I think the possibility to have the radiation waves or whatever that is called be brought here in the country is not likely. Japan is miles away from us...
People txting this are victims of the network eanting to earn money from all the messages forwarded. So so not be a vuctim. Before you send that sms be sure to think twice...

Yeah its a common practice in our country to send scary messages without basis or others saying you won in a game which you think you have not participated. Yep, it was quite alarming. However it serve some personal purpose as well. For my part, I have to review the facts, make some calculations about wind drift, direction, distance and rate of travel from the nuclear plant to my hometown. From available data, the figures are too small to pose any danger here. It was a good exercise really for me, just like what happened to the tsunami alert just last week after the quake hit Japan. It was an exercise to be vigilant at all times, to use proper judgement after gathering and weighing all the facts.
I wonder who started that message and where does he base his facts for on the other hand, it could spark mass hysteria for the rest of the populace.
