To those people who think I'm boring please stay away from my discussions..if you don't like them go somewhere else I really don't care.
Anyway, onto my latest boring discussion.
Sometimes I wish I had two ovens!
Especially today as I am cooking two bits of food and the one type is supposed to be cooked at a lower temperature for a shorter amount of time. Due to the fact I only have one oven I have to do a kind of juggling act with my food..not literally but you get the idea.
I'm confident what I'm cooking will turn out OK but I feel like Stephen Hawking, all these numbers and times in my head.
Thank God for oven clocks is all I can say!
Do you cope with only one oven? Mine is fine 99% of the time..it's just today I've had to think a bit more..which can't be a bad thing!

I lived for years with no stove or oven. Had a toaster oven. What a mess. Make something for one person at a time. Tooks hours sometimes. Believe me I know how you feel.

I can imagine how that must've been a real pain for you to operate. At least you persevered with it though and did manage to cook albeit it in a time-consuming fashion.

Yes, I know what you mean, I have definitely thought that thought too! But most of the time, just one oven is fine. But if you bake a large batch of something, for instance, it would be really convenient!

I'm amazed I didn't burn anything today but everything came out fine and..thankfully, cooked properly. One oven is usually enough for me as I'm only cooking for two.

I wanted double built in ovens but that didn't happen, however, I do have 2 kitchens in this house and the stove downstairs has double ovens, the one on the top is small and most of my pans don't fit. But with that stove and the one up stairs all is fine. Also I bought a large roaster, they are about $50 in the states now, sometimes even less, if you look around, but I can cook the roast, chicken etc in that, anything that takes a long, slow time to cook (big dish of scallopped potatoes!) then if it is something that I want to take to church, I can take the whole pan or just the liner with the food in it. So that is how I solved my oven problem. Using the roaster really frees up my oven and the pans. Now, my kids are all growed up and we have meals at my daughter's and when they built the new house she DEMANDED double ovens! Her doors open down and I have a hard time getting stuff out, especially the top oven! She also has my roaster!

Oh I never watch the cooking shows and I don't know the answer to this. I never thought about you not being from the US. I don't know if I can explain it..It's a large pan... dutch oven?..kind of like a crock pot...but will hold up to a 24pound turkey. The pan/ liner comes out so you could transport it or even set it on a counter for serving from. It's not a crock pot, you can cook anything in it, it has a temperture control knob that goes from the very low temps to 500 I think.
No it doesn't turn like a rotisserie. But now they have a liner that you can put inside it that divides into 3 parts so you can cook 3 different foods at once, or keep the foods hot!
Hope that helps. If you could find one, it might help free your ovens up, I wouldn't try baking a cake or bread etc in it but for the main course that takes the time and the oven it would be great. My daughter has shelfs in the garage that she stores all this 'special occasion use' stuff on.

Is it like those roasters that I see on shopping channels? I've not seen one for ages as I've not actually watched any shopping channels for ages (they can become addicting lol) but I think I know what you mean when you refer to a roasting oven. Does the chicken turn round in it..I think it's called a rotisserie or something over here. The local high-class butchers has a massive one and the smell is amazing I must say!

I don't encounter this problem too often, however, I did at Christmas time. I needed to finish the turkey and put something else in.. but the oven wasn't big enough really! Like you said, it's not often but occasionally two ovens would be nice!

Thankfully I got all the timings right today but - usually I don't even have to think about it. My Mum has a double oven but even she only uses one of them most of the time. At Christmas I'm at her house so problem solved with the turkey!

Hiya Janey,
Yep I would not mind something that cooks like two Ovens the one I have does not work so I have to juggle with saucepans and a couple of sort of electric Chef 3000 things well actually that would be fibbing because at the moment I only have one but I need another one like it as I cannot get the amount of Beans in that I would like to be able to do.
This week I am having to use chick peas and red beans out of jars again. Something I don´t much care for but there you go.
I am experimenting how much I can or cannot put into this Chef 3000 thing. It does cook some things really great actually but when it comes to uncooked Beans well I have seen that I am going to have to give it a helping hand and precook them myself on the Gas and let it do the rest when they are almost cooked.
See you cannot put the uncooked Beans in without boiling them to get the foam that comes up first so it´s on the Gas for the first three quarters of an hour and the rest in the Pot wish me luck that´s how I am planning to make do with it.
Don´t get me wrong I am very happy with that pot thing but not so happy about the Beans drudgery (grin).

Hiya Janey,
Palava no not really. It´s just that I can manage when I want to and make do with other things instead of the proper things.
Besides a normal oven here chews up all the electricity as well so I am doing well to not use it and apart from that it was a self cleaning oven that no one else ever cleaned you see so it has layers of muck on it that I will not be able to get off ever.
The dozy owner suggested that I try lemon Juice please excuse my ironic attitude but he did not know what he was talking about.
I put the Oven on just once and never again it started to smoke you know the fumes from it being so filthy.
The People who were here before really mistreated something that was so easy to use and clean they just never cleaned it full stop.
So I don´t bother with it, it´s like having an ornament that you never look at it´s completely useless.
The thing is I am not prepared to pay for a new oven when I would have to leave it here when we move as the House is not mine it´s rented you see.

Double ovens seemed to be popular a couple of decades ago. I don't see them very often anymore. When I built my house I decided to go with a cooktop and a wall oven, but I briefly thought about a range with an oven and a wall oven. I just don't cook/bake enough to warrant the expense. I'm happy with the cooktop and the wall oven.

I have a feeling though that American ovens (rather like the fridge/freezers) are miles bigger than ours anyway. I could be wrong but I'm probably not lol.

Well mine is not all that big...I'm guessing 30" wide. Now you got me on the fridge. I got a pretty big one, since I only go in to town about once a month to actually do grocery shopping. And I've thought about buying a smaller one and putting it in the garage. But so far, I've only thought about it...

Janey dear, is someone calling you boring? I have not seen it, but the truth is, if I cannot answer decently in your discussion, I will not bother about it. Now, as far as the ovens go, if you had two ovens you would use that much more fuel, whatever you cook with. I think the juggling probably is not too bad. I have had two ovens at one time, and there are days where I would gladly have them back. If I can cook one of the bits of food or one of the items in a toaster overn I will do so. In fact that is what I should have done today. For lunch I cooked some breaded tilapia. In addition I microwaved a sweet potato to share with hubby and then I also warmed up two different left overs in the microwave for veggies. It worked just fine. I know, some things do not come out too well in the microwave, though.

Well I thought I'd be able to cook the fish in the microwave (cos it was in bags) but it said "do not microwave." DOH!
What's a toaster oven? You're the second person to mention it and I'm not sure what it is..perhaps we have another name for it over here?
They've not called me "boring" as such..just placed catty comments in one of my discussions that weren't necessary. If they didn't like the discussion why bother commenting? I'm sure there are more interesting topics out there...and if they're bored why don't they start a discussion themselves?

A toaster oven is a small appliance, sits on the counter top. It is about as big as a small microwave. You can set it to bake, or to broil, or to toast on both sides. Some can even have convection cooking. They can be fairly inexpensive to deluxe and pricey. Handy to have, for instance, a couple of pieces of fish would have cooked in there. Take the pan out and toast bread on two sides.Etc.

I don't feel the need for 2 ovens, and if I did, I would break out a toaster oven.
Fact is that I can do just about everything I need in Maggiepie's toaster oven, since we aren't cooking major things at the best of times.
I've made cookies, cornbread, baked chicken, all in her toaster oven. I'd also guess it takes less electricity to use it because I'm not heating up the big oven - tho that isn't bad when its cold outside, but can be overwhelming when it is hot - and I'm in Texas remember, so its hot a lot more than it is cold!

my mom used to have a double, and something was always wrong with one of them,no matter how many times it was repaired.

Have you tried a George Foreman Grilling Machine?
It works well as a complement to oven cooking,
helping to prepared steamed healthy veggies,
wrapped in a foil packet with spices while the main
meal is cooking in the oven.

i HAVE OFTEN WISHED I HAD 2 OVENS ESPECIALLY WHEN U ARE COOKING A BIG HOLIDAY MEAL . mOST OF MY KIDS FAVORITES ARE COOKED IN THE OVEN SUCH AS DRESSING, SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE ETC. I always manage but it is a hassle every time. I don't cook for company like i use to but have wished many times for another oven. Happy weekend to u.

I say bring on the boring discussions, lol! I'm with ya, I would LOVE to have 2 ovens. You see the kind with one regular sized oven and a little one quite often in house & home magazines and it always makes me a little envious. I probably wouldn't use the second oven much but every now & then it would sure be nice. Plus, they make your kitchen look pretty upscale and sophisticated!

LOL! I know what you mean, they're usually at eye level aren't they? Very handy. Mum's double oven is a free-standing jobby but mine is single and built into the units with the hob on top of course. I do get sick of all that bending down lol.

Well first all, I don't see why you would think, or anybody else for that matter, that your discussions are boring..it's all about life !
Now onto the double oven, I have one and have used my second oven less than 6 times. My sister has come over and used it lol.
Our house burnt about 6 yrs ago and we rebuilt it and one thing I said I wanted to splurge on was a double oven and garden tub. Well I got both and they have both been used about the same amount lol.
I am not a huge cook at all and really had no right getting one. For the cooker, it would be great, like my sister. She is Mrs. Betty Crocker and she could really use one. She would stay in the kitchen all day if she could.
Maybe the future will hold a double oven for you, I will keep my fingers crossed for you .

The fire actually started outside on the back wall of the porch ( outside ) , and for the most part the firemen was able to save the house, except for the room on the inside which was the wall that caught on fire.
However, there was so much smoke damage the insurance said it was a total loss. It went through all the vents and to every part of the house. It smelled awful. So the insurance told us we would have the money to hire contractors to come in and totally gut out the house ( cause of the smoke )except for the walls. After having several contractors out and not liking their plans, we decided to do it ourselves. We wanted to compelety redo the house plans, add another room and so on. So after tearing down mostly all the walls and pre-treating the existing 2x4's with a sealer to keep the smoke smell out, we started built it the way we wanted it. It took us a year, but we came out with a extra room and a lot of small details we wanted. We picked out where we wanted to splurge when it came to the money, just my double oven, and garden tub. Plus I splurged on a ceiling fan for my den.
It is a old house, about 50 years old. We still have things that we never finished, a lot of trim work, which is just crazy after all this time. But, we had ran out of time. We had to be out of the house we were renting in a year ( which insurance was paying for ) So, here we are today, things that werent' finished and now faced with small home repairs that needs to be done already.
We look at the fire as a blessing in disguise actually. There were so many changes made to our lives because of it, but for the better !

Oh, I'm happy with my oven, I really am. It's only a couple of years old..well, going on three actually BUT it is 100 times better than the one we had before and it's efficient too, which is probably why I was able to juggle times today and get all the food ready at the same time. I was really quite chuffed with myself.
What on earth happened with your house? Did it all burn down completely because you say you rebuilt it?
Aww!

I have three ovens! When I had to replace my kitchen stove a few years ago, I bought on with two ovens and I have a roaster oven that stays in the garage. I only use that one for holiday dinners (it makes a really good turkey) or in the summer to keep the heat out of the house. Oh... I have four ovens if you want to count a solar oven! My goodness... anyway, I've been without an oven at all and that's hard. Maybe that's why I have so many now.

You are far from boring...wonder who said you are
Back to the topic....I have a convection microwave that doubles up as an oven. I don't use it much for cooking and prefer the old stove for everything. I haven't tried my hand at baking yet (if you don't count the 2-3 experiments that I tried). I plan to do it sometime in the near future. But I'm sure I wouldn't try any juggling act then where I will need to use the oven at two different temperatures.

They didn't say the actual word but insinuated it. I'm over it now lol.
Mum used to have a convection microwave, it was huge! When I lived there I used to bake biscuits and such-like in it, it was really fun to do. However, she has an ordinary microwave now as it's much smaller and she has the double oven if she's desperate for space!
Well, the juggling act worked although the spuds weren't as cheesy as I thought they would be (I blame the Happy Shopper Mature Cheddar Cheese..I really should've bought some parmesan) but anyway, all is well and the food WAS edible, which is good enough for me!

I love cooking and I am most of the time in the kitchen. But I seldom use my oven, only on occassions like I have to cook a whole chicken broiled or bake cakes and pastries. Anyway, on these occassions, it is really very advantageous if you have two ovens but I can manage to wait in the meantime.
