Starting a contest on my blog is it a good idea ?

hi guys,
I was thinking of starting a contest on my blog and the winner will get some prizes.
like cash prize of 10-15$ and 1-2 months of ad space on my blog.
There are 2 reasons for doing it.
1st to increase my blog traffic and readership
2nd to have pure fun.
Now i wanted to ask is it a good idea.
I mean I am spending some money on this contest.
should i go ahead with it or find some other way of spending this money.
whats your view on this.
will this contest be a success or I am just wasting my time ?

It's certainly a good idea it's just getting the traffic to the site initially which could be the main problem so if your blog gets enough traffic to warrant holding a competition then yes it's certainly a good idea

@stevieboy19: You got the point there my friend...The main obstacle to make the contest a success is the initial traffic itself...You cannot hold a contest without anyone to participate...
@hatimyal: I believe that the contest should NOT be too hard to enter...Free entry should do it right because what you really wanted here is the traffic itself...Good luck with that!

Yaa there is actually nothing the participant should do.
It just that thy have to submit their blog on my site and get visitors to vote for their blog.
and the entry is free and their is prize for the winner/winners.
I was thinking of this.
what do you guys say.
I have a traffic of 100-200 visitors per day.

@livecenter I agree the competition should be easy to enter .
@hatimyal I would consider asking them to like your blog or something along them lines so that way you can get an increase in traffic and maybe with liking their friends could potentially enter and do the same thing so you could in theory have a domino type effect in gaining more traffic .
One hundred to two hundred visitors a day isn't too bad as a starting base I think especially if you apply some of my theory above as then you'll get more entrants/traffic .

Recently, my husband started a blog contest on his guitar blog. Many followers participated in it just to win a $3-guitar pick. It was fun, I think my hubby enjoyed it. At the same time, it generated a lot of interest among his followers too.

Yes that would be an excellent idea and it will most definitely generate traffic to your blog site. What kind of contest will you hold and how will you determine the winner. That will be exciting for your reader as well as for you and I hope you succeed in your plan.

Yaa i know its a good idea but still.
anyways the contest will be about people submitting their blogs on my blog and then they have to get visitors to vote on their blog.
the highest number of votes wins the prize.
thats how i will decide the winners.
what do you think? will it work out good ?

Hi,
I do see some people actually engaging a giveaway contest
at their blog, it does help to increase their blog traffic and
attract more viewer to their blogs.
From my point of view, you can always give a present (DIY) or even
bought from shop as a token of participation for the lucky winners,instead
of giving cash prize.
I saw lot of my friends are doing this kind of giveaway contest in their
blog and the responses are pretty good.
And not to forget, I did won some of the prizes from the giveaway contest too.

Starting a contest on your blog is a good idea in a sense...Besides getting more traffic, you can become closer to your blog readers and thus making them more loyal to keep updated to your blog...If everything goes well, I cannot see in any way that the contest will be a failure...Just make sure that you get enough money and time to spend on that!
