i have just watched on tv the news for the day. nuclear reactors in japan have again exploded and the fear of radiation on people of japan. they are in a place near the nuclear plant. some tv newscaster happens to be near their place and she took them from their home and helped them get back to the philippines. there were three of them and were working as caregivers. but many more are stranded. many filipino residents flock to the philippine embassy hoping the government will free them from paying fees for their travel papers. and some even are asking for the government for free air travel back to the philippines. i pity them a lot. they are the so called alive modern day heroes of our generation bringing in dollars for our country and yet when calamities like these strike these heroes (earthquake and tsunami) we see very slow help getting through to them .. children are with them and they just suffering from the cold weather and the trauma. i wish for the government for a speedy action. if you were the overseas worker and is needing help, what do you think is the best way our government can do to help? ann

Hi Ann. Yes, there are lots of Australians in Japan at the moment as well. We have a friend who is working there at the moment. He says that he is staying for now, but if the Australian Embassy tells him to leave, he will leave. There are others I am sure who have already chosen to leave just in case something worse happens with the nuclear reactor. I think that he should leave as there is every chance that further damage could be done to the reactor from aftershocks. Governments around the world should be organising flights for their citizens in Japan I feel. The Australian government did this for Aussies in Egypt recently when the violence was happening there and they should be doing it for Japan as well, but I have not heard if they are or not.

hello bill, i guess i was over reacting 15 hours ago when i saw the news about filipino workers begging for help and what is happening to my countrymen. it just felt like our government was doing snail pace job in organizing flights and transportation arrangement in going back home. and worse, there was nothing said about arranging fare for the filipino people who cannot afford an airfare as of yet because they happen to be in the path of the tsunami and they lost almost everything. i am a lot calmer now. i hope these migrant workers get the right and fast treatment from our government just like they give our government the corresponding taxes as it falls due. ann

Glad to hear that you are a lot calmer now Ann. This has been a dreadful situation and every day, more bad news comes out. I have been trying to avoid hearing about it too much as over exposure to these events in the news can be very depressing.

In times like this we can't expect expedite actions from our government agencies because of the bureaucracy in the system. It's hard to act immediately when there are a lot of people to sign, to approve, verify, certify correct, etc etc... It took them forever to process the required papers to proceed to implementation. And yes, you are right, we call them modern day heroes but during these times, they don't get the help they deserve. Let's continue to pray for our leaders that they may speed up actions towards helping them. God bless our heroes. God bless tigeraunt!

hi chuy, di ba nakakainis? the very slow action these filipino heroes are getting seems to be so unfair. in bahrain, filipino workers are also requesting for help saying they could not the contact nor rely on the embassy there. where are they going to ask help then especially that their passports were not given back to them by their employers. where to go, where to run, where to hide? they are like rats running for their lives. kaawa-awa! how much more if they dont have money in their pockets? ann

Yes, I wish there's something we could do to change the system. It's really a snail like move...And kawawa talaga our fellow Filipinos seemed to be neglected or not giving utmost importance by the government. It also gives the idea to Filipinos who wants to go abroad, how it looks life it troubles come in the country that they worked in. |:(

If I am on OFW, i wouldn't rely much from the assistance of the government. Maybe I should do my share also because from what i see now from the television, the government still lacks the resources to help those people in need not only in Japan but also in Middle East. They have the money to get those people trapped on those areas, why not send them money for plane tickets? They said that OFWs are our modern heroes, give us remittances to increase the rate of our economy then now that they are in need, the government is reluctant to help them? is this their way to threat those people who helped us? So I say, give them plane tickets and then do every ways to get them back here in our country. And for the OFWs just don't loose hope and also do everything to keep you safe. If you have the resources to get out of the current situation, just get out safely!

hi ate! At a time like this, the government is sure to be doing the best it can but what can they do? And of course, people, when faced with calamities like these, flock to the embassies but it's not like the embassies are closing in their doors aren't they? If I was an overseas worker, of course I'd do the same and go to the place where I feel most at home, and being Filipino, I'd go to the embassy. The best thing I think the government can do to help is bring or ship over foods and clothes-- main necessities because if the people aren't alive and well there, what's more to save? summer

I have seen this news to and it is very alarming actually. It is so sad to know that our government is so slow when it comes to rescue. Yes, they are modern day heroes which our government should do an immediate action for. However, with our snail system, I don't think they will be given help as fast as they could.

With the current situation we are having.... it seems that our government is pretty much helpless when it comes to funding these OFWs. We can actually see that budget is the real problem since they are plenty out there and the recent migration of OFWs from Libya our economy is turned upside down already. The ongoing turmoil around the world is just affecting us in many ways.
