When I receive my salary I am always torn between saving it for a rainy day and buying only what I need or buying the beautiful things that i want. Sometimes, I get a little jealous at my friends who can buy all they want and do not care about saving. what should be the best option?

This can certainly be a difficult decision. I do think that you should save at least some of it. I think that if you take a little bit of your paycheck and save it, I think that it will make a difference. I don't think that you necessarily need to save all of it, but at least a little.

Don't get envious of your friends who buys all that they want but not caring about saving. There will come a time that they will regret doing that.
In your case, you can buy some things you like for yourself, and maybe also for the needs of your immediate family ( your parents will be so glad if you initiate this) and put aside some for your savings. Every payday, you may see to it that you save even a small amount. You will be surprised after how many months of saving of how big it could be, once accumulated.
That being so, you can buy material things that costs a lot, but could be of use for a lifetime, such as cellphone , Ipad etc.

I think you should just save a little but not deny yourself some pleasure shopping. You must enjoy your life but it doesn't hurt to put a little aside for a rainy dat so to speak....

Saving i would say a best option being practical. but if you wana live the moment you should go like your friends does, it might make you happy for a while now but then your future might be in dark. it actually depends on your capability of working yourself out so do whatever your brain/heart says afterall its your monies and your life

The question is a bit tricky. Saving is indeed a very, very good thing to practice but you have got to understand what it means to balance things. Splurging on something you want once in a while is something you should shower yourself with especially when you have worked so hard. I understand that saving is something hard to do but very rewarding at the end of the road because you have something saved for a rainy day. I always tell my friends save up but never forget to give something for yourself once in a while for a job well done.

Yes I know what you mean, but the best thing to do is to save like most of it and some of it you can use to buy yourself nice things. One never knows when something could go wrong like if you get fired or something and than you won't have income coming in. Always tragic when that happens. Always good to save money right now I save my money cause I used to have a job, but not anymore. I have to save it for my college so that I can continue my education. I wish I had a job right now so that I can get my hair done, my nails, and to shop for bags and clothes, but right now I can't do any of that fun stuff because education comes first.
I adore to shop, but yeah remember to save your money and to not use it all up I know when it's with friends that it's kind of like a competition to see who has nicer things. I have been there before, but it's never good to gloat about the nice expensive materialistic things because all that can be gone right away. So I hope that you decide to atleast put some of your money into your savings.

It is your choice, that is your money. You may either save or spend it. Saving can be a great thing because when time comes, you have something to use for bigger projects or items. If you spend them now, that will be a luxury. Although, spending a little is not a bad thing at all. You also need pampering for that hard earned. Spend a little and save much can be more advisable and convenient.

Well you can splurge your money when you start the habit of saving your money. I think that is the best in here. While there is not much of a distraction to your earnings you should save some of it at least to prepare yourself from being financially independent. For now, I presume you are still single so saving would be very easy for you then when you are already married and have you own family to tend to.

I can relate to this toIpic very much. During my younger years, I used to hear from my elders saying that we need to save for the future, yet it is also true that we also have to live for the day for wé are not sure if there is still tomorrow for us to live by. Come to think of it, if the reason why this question acrossed to our mind is because we are did not expect that this time will come that we need to have the more essential in our lives. It only means that we did not save or prepare for this. We want everything to be in place and be organized, but we're never sure what lies ahead of us. Some people says that we have to make the most of our daily lives for it is a gift, as well as we have to prepare for tomorrow to enjoy what we have done in our younger years. Probably, the best thing we can do is live by our means. Bear in mind that we're working to live and not living to work. Don't let money manuever our lives. Money can be earned but not happiness. Well this is just my opinion. Happy mylotting.

Hi katrinapaz and a warm welcome on myLot!
I would say if you can afford to splurge and still have for the rainy days great! But rainy days are not pre predictable so best to save a bit here and there just in case.
You can buy somethings for you just do not learn to live check to check, it becomes a really bad habit and when emergencies come up you fall way behind on priorities.

This is always a tricky topic of discussion. In my personal experience I did mostly saving. Which turned out to be a good thing when I became unemployed and had that savings to fall back on for the 8 months I was out of work. I was able to pay my bills and not fall behind like so many have during this tough economy.
I still had nice things that I really wanted. But the stuff that I wanted but didn't need? Well, I did without mostly. Good luck on your quest for balance on spending vs. saving.

I just got done with a budgeting class. They advise to try to have at least 3 mos worth of pay in savings thaat way if you lose your job then you will still be able to pay yourn bills. People think or say I won't lose my job but the way the ecocnomy is these days it can happen to anybody. Take a little money time to time and splurge on yourself a little. Don't worry about what your friends have. If the time ever comes where they don't have that kind of money anymore or they lose thier jobs they won't have back-up funds to live on where you would if you put money into savings then they will be admring you for saving.

You should have a formula. The most common formula for people when it comes to their income is: INCOME-EXPENSES=SAVING which is totally wrong! You should prioritize your savings first. INCOME-SAVING= EXPENSES this is ideal if you are concern about your financial future. Treat your savings as part of your expenses and prioritize it for heaven's sake.

Saving is the real option.but if you had extra you can reward your self now if you want something much expensive you set asides your personal savings from the saving for your wants..you need to have two savings one is for your needs..like food and shelter or for your health and the other is for your want in that case you wont end up empty handed no matter how big or small your salary is...it takes time and patience if you want to buy some expensive ting..like car, gadgets and things that would satisfy you..but its worth it if you buy this things that can make you happy..it always take time and management for your happiness to achieved

Hi Katrina! Welcome to Mylot!
I'm sure you know of the local tale of the grasshopper and the ant.
The grasshopper was so laxed while the ant was so busy saving for the rainy day.
You know what happened right?
Same is true with the real world. You can't go wrong saving for the rainy days.
You can still buy the things that you want but make sure a portion of your income is allocated to savings. Work hard, save up but still try to enjoy life!
