It's quite good to do something for your friend when they needed you. but how could we assure that what we did for them helps them a lot too?

When we help someone especially a friend, we shouldn't be expecting anything in return. We don't even have to expect that they would appreciate it because when we helped them we did it out of our own kindness and no payment is expected in return.
I always tell my friend there's no need to say thank you as real friends help each other all the time.

When we do something form our hearts and sincerity it would be quite easy to see that they are very pleased and satisfied. If is a good true friend they would not hesitate to explain if they were not please.
Being the true friend that you are I can imagine you not being upset and working things out in terms of helping further.

A true friend will tell you frankly, if what you did for him/her really helped.
But people have different ways of expressing appreciation. Some would be too shy to say thank you , so they may give you a small token in return. Some of them would just simply hug you for no cause at all. Or if they haven't said a thing, then it only means your help didn't help them after all.
Just be glad for yourself that you have done something for them, whether they liked it or not.

regardless if its a big help, or not, i know you're friend will appreciate your effort in helping them. the mere fact that your presence is there to support them, is a big thing.
