'I know'

I hear this a lot from kids these days....when in truth...they hardly know anything or maybe just a wee bit of the subject or topic. I wonder why that is so? Is it just the kids I know or is it common everywhere? These kids THINK they know everything and aren't curious or trying to learn more about something/anything. I looked around and seems like the adults are the same way.

Hello Sandhya! Very interesting discussion !!!. I have also heard these pet words 'I know everything' from many .......kids and grown up both. When we try to explain something to our daughter, she would say - "Don't tell me, I know it very well". I know that she cannot know as much as we know, therefore, first I scratch my head hearing this answer than with due patience tell her again - "Look! we are more experienced than you and there is no substitute for experience, so please listen to us carefully" Your discussion reminds me of one of my colleagues in office, who would invariably say 'I know'. When I would start telling him about any information either officially or otherwise, before I could complete my statement, he would invariably say - "I know it" making me feel like a foolish person. I would get angry hearing this. However, he was senior to me, therefore, I used to keep quite. One day I discussed this problem with one of my other colleagues, who was very wise, mature and sane. He told me - 'Look! Deepak - you need not take it seriously, it is his takiyakalam [which if loosly translated in English would mean - 'a common expression that a particular person habitually uses after saying something else']. My other colleague would further add that about him that he (who used to say 'I know') did not know many things but he would claim that he knew everything..

Yes...looks like they just get used to saying it and don't realize it...as adults. And kids THINK they know something and don't have the patience to find out if they really do.

Yeah, the moment anybody says (including kids) that 'they know', it means they do not want to listen and add to their knowledge.

I have heard kids say this over and over before. I used to when I was little. I think its just their way of trying to stop adults from being over-patronising. They want to be percieved to have the kind of knowledge that adults have, and even though they are kids, they dont want to be treated as such. Because an adult knows something and they dont, they dont want to seem silly, so they will say "I knowwwwww" because they hope it will convince the adult that they are not stupid. Thats what I think anyway.

That makes sense...and they see the adults around them doing it too. In today's world...asking for more information is looked down upon.

I think that curiosity is a thing you either have or you don't. It seems that sense of wonder has been killed in kids . Between Having to do this or go do that, kids are more busier than ever. There is no time to Just sit and wonder about things , to be curious.Instead they play video games , text risque photos and gossip on facebook.

I have to agree on that. They certainly don't have the time to sit and reflect or think and they feel they know everything just with a little knowledge of the topic.

I think it is just a saying that they don't think about. Like when they meet someone and ask "How are you?" but nobody waits for an answer because basically they do not care. They say it without thinking.

Yes, sometimes that happens....but sometimes they really say it because they THINK they know everything they need to know about the topic. If a child is interested in a topic and has done some extra reading, I think it's fair enough....but often that's not the case.

Hi SV, I think the kids are smart and think that they know everything. If I say something to my son, he will ask, how do you know? Many times I am getting irritating with this question? He too have the habit of saying, I know.. Sometimes with his lessons, I know all… but I won’t leave him, because I know what he knows (lol). If he is watching TV then he won’t listen even what I am asking but give a ready made answer.. then I have to switch off the tv to make him to listen properly.

Yes, that's the kind I am talking about. When kids say they 'know' everything...there's nothing more to learn. As another mylotter pointed out....they are not even aware that what they know is nothing compared to what they do not know.

Yes is true, in children is lack of interest, and in adults, is lack of humility, =) Blessings!... Dainy

I always look at knowledge that there is so much no-one knows it all...its just that different people know about different parts of it, I guess it all depends on what interests one the most...

I know....even the greatest scientists/musicians..etc. say they know very little and there's a lot more to learn..even in their respective fields. But most kids/people I meet nowadays....think they know everything about everything. I was just wondering why that was the case.

That's what I figured. The kids are imitating the adults.

Thanks to the internet, people and kids who want to learn, know a lot more today than those of 10 years ago. Even if you were using Wikipedia alone, you would find most answers to your questions. So maybe they know more than you think. 16 year old are pretty smart these days.

I agree that information is available. But I see this trend in very young children too who are not able to find information on their own.
