Internship in India

Hey out there mylotters.. I will possibly be doing an internship in India in the fall of 2011. I was wondering if anyone on here can help me answer a few questions about India. I see that my country has a couple of warnings about travelling in certain parts of India. How safe is it to live and travel in South India? I don't know yet what my pay will be (if any), and I have a hard time finding on the internet what the general wages are in India. Does anyone know what I should expect for pay as an intern? And last, but not least, does anyone have any good suggestions on what to see and experience while in South India?
