Erik Petersen aka Mischief Brew The Dresden Dolls Amanda Palmer Tristan Allen Evelyn Evelyn The Orphans This Bike is a Pipe Bomb Grim Dylan The Smears Lucid Nation DinyourA The Drive By Truckers Mat Kearney Straylight Run Destry Kristin Hersh Joanna Newsom The Foxboro Hot Tubs The Andrew Jackson Jihad Those groups are everything from folk, to punk, to angst, to rock, to pop... good variety there, but they're not all child/work appropriate.. so be warned

Ahhh The Smiths = love hehehe This is kind of for everyone since two people have mentioned The Smiths but Morrissey's guitarist and main songwriter for the past ... I don't even remember how many years, 20 or something... Alain Whyte put out an EP last summer. It's a side project he created the previous summer with Mat Devine of Kill Hannah (get to them in a minute). They only have four songs out right now, one of which, The Search, was used in the opening scene of this season of One Tree Hill. Anyway, the project is called Setting Fires and the EP is appropriately "EP1". Rumor is they have more songs to release in the future but that's a pretty amazing songwriting duo there. My go-to band, when anyone says they want something new - even though they are a long way from "new" - is Kill Hannah. They mostly avoid labeling themselves, in a pinch they go for "rock," but the media has labeled them everything from nu-romantic to goth, electronic, synth-pop, alternative, shoegaze. Where to begin kind of depends on what you like, musically, but my "starter kit" for people who haven't heard them is Lips Like Morphine, Strobe Lights (which is available on the Rock Band network), Nerve Gas, Kennedy, and Promise Me (four track single can be found on killhannah.bandcamp.com...can you tell I promote for these guys?). If you really like the "indie" sound - lo-fi, experimental, unpolished - you would probably like some of their earlier stuff, which is unfortunately harder to find without going the illegal route but try Hit the Planes Down, Beauty in Sinking Ships, Glam Rock Feather Boa...Of these 8 songs the only one I haven't found on YouTube is Glam Rock Feather Boa. I'd love to hear what you think of either of these um bands.
