I'm a personal trainer. First thing to remember is - a six pack means minimal body fat. A lot of photoshopping is done in mens mags to put definition where there isn't any - like in womens zines where lines etc are made to go away.
Secondly, endless sit-ups and crunches don't work at all. You need to hit the deep inner transverse (core) muscles plus the obliques. People tend to pull on their necks - your body needs to come up with your elbows back and head looking straight ahead, chin away from chest. There's a device called an ab cradle which will nest your head and put your body in the correct position - get a good quality one.
Really, there's no magic exercise, it's all about diet and technique, but everything starts with the core muscles. The all round ab strengthener is the "plank" - go into the push-up position then just hold it stationary, back straight. Keep breathing. Maintain 20 seconds or more - you can rest on your elbows to make it easier.
Hope this helps!

I am definitely not a fitness expert but am very physically fit. My suggestions are diet, exercise and healthy eating.
