Today is 'HOLI' the hindu festival of colours. For performing the puja, i need mango leaves, certain specific flowers, small raw mangoes that are just coming up and some other fruits ..
Hubby is out of city, son has joined new job, it is very difficult to get these things now a days in the city, all trees were cut in the name of widening of streets..
Some vendors came in the morning selling all these, i was in bath room.
My neighbor bought for me too.
Few hours ago , guys of this area came collecting wood for 'holika'; they will burn this like a bon fire, it symbolizes burning of 'bad' in you..
I gave money, we don't have fire wood.
Any such festival there?
Can you get flowers, leaves etc needed in worship/celebrations?
HAPPY HOLI TO ALL
Please respond

We have festivals here that celebrate the seasons that are kind of like that. Flowers that are common to the season, vegetables that are planted during that time. As far as religious celebrations, none that I know of. There have been what they call revivals here. They usually start in the Spring, but are not limited to the Spring.
Leaves and flowers are fairly easy to get here. I suppose it depends what you are looking for and if it is common to the area.
I hope you have a great time during your celebration. It sounds like an amazing event to be a part of.

Most of our festivals are related to season, so seasonal flowers, fruits are needed in the celebration, it is difficult at times to get them due to cutting of trees
thanks for response Jen
god bless you

Although I do not celebrate the Holi because I am not Hindu, I wish you a Happy Holi Kalyani. By reading your post I have the impression that celebrating it is so much fun. Enjoy the day:)
p.s I searched it in the internet. It is indeed FUN and colourful.

Sounds neat! I enjoy your posts Kalyni for sharing your culture with us. I'm glad your neighbor thought of you to get some of the materials needed as well. Kind of your neighbor for doing so.
We don't have any flower festivals here that I am aware of. The tournament of Roses parade in Pasadina California is the closest to any national celebration that is all plants and plant materials.

Hi
It is not flower festival but festival of colors, we throw colored water on each other, apply colored powders that we call gulal.
Many kinds of fruit and flowers are needed in the worship on this day
I am happy you enjoy my posts

hi kalyni that sounds really interesting and beautiful too. i dont think we really have any holiday quite like that until May day.April first we go around playing tricks on people, not mean ones just fun ones then yelling april fool. I am sort of isolated too now as my twisted knee is still bothering me and I have to use a walker too. festival of colors'
evensounds pretty too. I am glad your neighbor helped you out. we could get flowers here and leaves if we had any real equvalent but we really 'do not. Happy Holi to you Kalyani from Hatley and hugs too from a fellow diabetic.

i wonder why the title of your discussion says helpless. you got all that you needed for your pooja, so you should be happy right? i am from india but i hardly get to see a few people who are drenched in the various colours of holi. when i was small, i used to enjoy watching my neighbours play holi
