The first thing you MUST know is if she actually wants a pet. The biggest mistake a person can make when gift-giving is buying a pet when the person didn't want one. Better yet, ask her what she wants. Only she can say which is better for HER. And who knows, she might want a gerbil. Hamsters have a tendancy to bite. And they aren't very personable. If you go to a pet store to buy either pet make sure that you ask lots of questions about their habits and personalities. If she doesn't like rodents like mice then a hampster might be a bad idea. A lot of people are freaked out by their tails. They are both cute creatures. Be careful if you decide to buy more than one of a certain animal that they are both males or both females so that you don't suddenly have 20 bunnies or hampsters.

if it is a popular thing to give now then really be wary! Fads never last. When the movie 101 Dalmations came out using real dalmations everyone went out and bought a cute little dalmation puppy. Only to find out that they are not a very good pet in the long run unless you have to time to make them one. They were not very good with kids and many people ended up giving them away, setting them loose or putting them to sleep. So sad for them :( Especially with little animals like that that can reproduce many times over you have to be careful. One day you may become overrun with the "pest" that was once a cute little pet.
