I forgot my shorthand

I learned it in my secretarial course in 2000. But now I only remember some of the vowels and strokes. And I can't make them in a simple word. My boss asked me to be his secretary but I want to inform him about my lack in shorthand. Can I do so?

I am not surprised friend, because if you were inactive, you forgot, just ask some body to dictate and you write in short-hand, you can regain and improve speed too Well you can tell your boss and assure about your ability to revive soon thanks for sharing have a great weekend cheers best of luck kalyani

Hi, Yes, do. He may tell you will not have to use your shorthand too often. In case it will be required regularly you can agree on a date until which you can get back into practice. In one way or another, your honesty will surely pay off.

Believe it or not, shorthand is really becoming a lost art. There are very few people that don't know shorthand so your boss might not be surprised by this fact. What is much more common to be able to do these days is to be able to transcribe. I would imagine that if you told your boss that you forgot shorthand he would be willing to work things out so that you could transcribe directly into wordprocessing and it really would save time in the long run.

I think so too. Nevertheless, it was my responsibility also to have a shorthand skill. Anyway, I will try to talk to my boss so that he can know better of my ability. Thanks for your comment.

I think if you have learn before, you can just refresh and practice it again and you will catch up easily. So, you can start to practice it or take a refresh course one more time and I believe you will be able to catch up very fast.

If you believe you can work it out in the long run. Why not grab. But if you feel confident and accepted you most if you will confess that you are shorthanded then do so. Goodluck to your decision.

I didn't think they still taught this, I haven't heard of anyone using it here in Australia for years, maybe they so but I just haven't heard about it...I thought things were more into a microphone and then typed on a computer...

I do sympathise. If anyone asked me to take shorthand I'd do thisas I wouldn't have a clue to what I'm doing. Having said that, there was a guy who took dictation extremely fast and even shorthand wouldn't cover it, so I used a combination of shorter words along with the shorthand itself, in order to get it all down. Can you shorten words instead of using shorthand, do you think?
