So You Watch "Lie To Me"

I know colleague who claims he's an expert in telling lies. He said he can tell lies just by looking at someone. Well, this got me interested and asked him how he acquired his "skill". He said he watches "Lie To Me" starring Tim Roth, Kelli Williams. I wanted to let out a big laugh but, I guess, out of respect I just held it in. What is he, a 10 year old kid? So I had fun with it.
How To Effectively Tell A Lie
I have a better way of telling lies although it has some limitations. You see, in order for you to detect a lie, all you have to do is look at the person's iris. If it constricts, he/she is telling a lie. Limitations are you should be in a well-lit area and if the person's iris is dark brown, a light source should be directed towards the eye. So far, this method hadn't failed me.
We did an experiment, I had a common friend as the subject and told him to think of 3 things he saw earlier before he arrived at work. Within those 3 things of course, one should be a lie. Then I had this lie-detector wannabe tell which one is the lie. After 5 sets of it, he couldn't determine which is the lie. That's when my stomach was already aching because of laughing. He got angry with me because of it and said something like "You seem to know a lot, why don't you try?" To his surprise, I got all of it. He wouldn't believe me and said I paid the subject to sabotage him. I guess some people are so locked up in their fantasies they won't come out to reality.

Take him to play poker and make money! If he can read people whether they are telling lies or not, it is a good skill in the game. I think I can tell if people is telling lies most of the time, I don't know why but I just can sense it.

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!" Now tell me if you can determine if I'm lying or not

That made my day!
Anyway I wasn't really lying or anything I just quoted a phrase from the movie "gone with the wind" To put it simply I just gave a random statement without much thought
Come to think of it, you are right I always give a damn about anything

haha, i think it's very hard to tell, in my eyes, human being is the most complicated "animal" in the world. sometimes what they show to you may be not what they think. As for me, no,all my happy and sorrow are on my face, and when i am lying, my face is red.soooooooooooooooo sad.

you do realize the show is based on a real person that has made huge breakthroughs in psychology and science right? if some one is trained or talented enough they will be able to pick up on peoples micro-expressions or vocal tones changing. it is real but if this is just some random dude that thinks he has super powers and sleeps in his spiderman pj's while playing d & d i can see what you mean..

Yep, the show is based from that but it's still a show. Writers would do everything to keep things interesting like how Lightman assumes just about anything which turns out to be true. I won't rely on whatever they're doing in that show. It's amusing but Lie To Me isn't a full video tutorial on how to tell lies, it's still a show.

Hifrontvisitor,
Well detecting lies is not so easy neither so much difficult. Not on your level thigh, I too can detect lies.
I love psychology and whenever there is a good book on psychology on the stand I pick up.
Actually there are very few who can remain cool even after telling lies and he/she would not give you any hint that you catch him/her. But in most cases by looking into the eye and the color of the face and the mode of expression one can infer that this or that person is telling lies.

Yes, though blushing is not so much applicable on the fair skinned people you can watch their ear lobs. If he/she is telling lies and feeling guilty his/her ear lob would be much reddened than other parts of the body.
Secondly those whop are not professional liers often tend to fumble while speaking and their speech also becomes incoherent.

You're right. The blushing is also uncontrollable but most Filipinos have a fair skin complexion, which will make it hard for you to tell whether they're blushing or not. I've actually been taught this method. I've been told that there are reactions we can't control whenever we're feeling guilty and one is the size of the iris. I don't rely on gestures, facial expressions, etc.. That'll just make things complicated and everyone can fake that.

It's always easy to tell if someone is lying if you really know the person. Although I suggest you try my method if you don't know the person and you wanna tell if he/she is lying. It's highly effective.

Hi Frontvisions. I am pretty good thank God when it comes to knowing if a person is lying or not. I know it is spiritual decrement with me. I have always been able to tell when someone is lying to me. My ex it was hard for some to tell if he was lying but I knew it when he lied.

Hello Frontvision,
Too bad, he shouldn't have brag about if it's going to hurt his pride knowing that he got it wrong this time and YOU got it right. maybe you should have tried it first before him, that would have been less damaging at hand. well, i hope he didn't took it personally or that would be something different.

The iris do dilate when someone is telling a lie but like what you've said, some external factors like lighting, etc should be taken into consideration. In my case i can tell whether my son is lying or not and my husband too. But to others there's no way i can guess if they are lying to me or not.
What you did was fun though!

I meant when the iris grows smaller, that means constrict, right? It's normal with family relatives but with other people that's what I rely on. You should try it.

Is that so? I also think the Lie to Me methods of lie detecting are limited. For one thing, a guy always accused me of lying because I never made eye contact with him. The truth was, I have asperger's syndrome so I never look into people's eyes. Anyone who knows about asperger's knows that aspies avoid eye contact.
With so many different types of brain disorders and dysfunctions out there, it's hard to really give an accurate way of detecting lies by facial expressions.

I don't think Lie To Me's lie detection is limited. It is full of bull crap.

A person can't possibly become a deception expert simply by watching 'Lie To Me'. It takes many years of study to perfect the art of microexpressions and body language reading.
Paul Eckman, Humintell and David Matsumoto have come up with course you can take for the purpose of studying microexpressions. There is also a much deeper course one can take, called F.A.C.S. This course will take you into all of the coding of the face and microexpressions.
'Lie To Me' was an interesting show to say the least. They did touch upon some of the science behind it, but there is so much more to it that they did not cover. Too bad the show was cancelled, tho. it was great while it lasted. For those wanting to explore the subject more and learn more, it is good to know there are programs out there offered to help you learn them. It's not a quick study, however.
