So, I don't believe in God.

On most of these posts I see people saying God is the answer to all their problems. They get happiness from Him, He gives them hope, etc.. And I can't help but think all you guy's are crazy. I don't mean it in a bad way, but sense I don't believe in him, to me it's like you find happiness and hope from the mere thought of him being there.
I'm not a bad kid. I don't do drugs, go to parties, drink, smoke, or anything of the sort. I don't worship the Devil or anything, because I also don't think he exists. I have been going to church sense I was around 4 and I have yet to have the slightest feeling of him being there. I have read The Bible, Book of Mormon, D&C and to me it's just a book. I haven't got anything out of it.
Why haven't I received some sort of sign or feeling telling me He is there? Over a period of time of not getting anything out of it, I just gave up. And I'm perfectly happy without having the thought of God being on my side or whatever. I have gone to different churches seeing maybe I would feel something, but nothing happened. So pretty much I came to the conclusion that people WANT to feel safe, and WANT to believe there is a God to give them hope. Not because He is really there, but because people need the thought of reassurance.

I sometimes feel the same way but there is a God. Even with all the theory in this world that God doesn't exist can't prove where all this came from. God is a really being. Big bang theory? Where did the gases come from. Everything has to be created so there is always a creator. Nothing would happen if you believe if it give you self assurance then nothings bad about felling assured. I'm not against you i'm just saying there is a being out there that created all this or started all of this we should just be thankful that He/She did. ^_^

God cannot be explained theoretically. God is beyond all theories but within those theories. You just need to understand that we need to look at by unlearning the prejudice thinking.

Well i have nothing against your beliefs. We all have different beliefs. You have your own belief then its just right for me to respect it and if i have a strong faith cause its my belief, its just right that other people do the same.

Maybe we don't have an answer to how the earth started. We are only human, and everything that has been thought up and told has been from humans. People told us about God. And people have told us about the Big Bang Theory. People like to understand things, and when they don't it annoys them. So the thought that God created it all was just another way to make people feel like they know whats going on in this world, when in reality, we will never know anything for sure. There are people who believe in other things just as much as people who believe in God. I'm not leaning towards God or the Big Bang Theory on being correct, because I believe in neither of them.

Hmmm... Interesting take on belief. I used to go to church regularly. Actually, I was an active member of a church organization. I was a choir member, rendered solos in front of the church and the likes. Although it's been a few years since I last attended a church mass, I do believe in God still. And because of that belief, I'm able to steer away from bad vices or doing anything considered outside the norms.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I see people all the time saying that God helped them quit smoking, drinking, or any other bad habit. But maybe they just needed the idea that someone more powerful then anything was on their side helping them do that. The thought of a person always with them helping them.
The idea of God being there is really clear. But how do people know that He is actually there?

joey, once upon a time, there was a man called Augustine who abhorred God and violated every commandment that was written in the good book. That was his way of defying the existence of the Eternal Father. Augustine was very intelligent, and he quite much depended on his own self, until one time, when God touched him while he was whiling, wasting his time sitting on a bench. Augustine then made a 360 turn and wrote some of the greatest defense about the existence of the Almighty Father.
joey, God touches us in His time, not our time. God makes all things beautiful in His time, not our time. Wait for your time, God might be preparing you for greater things like Augustine. In the meantime, you are well in the right track being good. The recipe for greatness is in your person. I sense someone highly intelligent in you.
Stay good!

I'm a firm believer of God, but I'm also a firm practitioner of logic and science. Before believing something, I need empirical proof first. Most things can be answered by science. Things that we can't explain now will probably be explained after a hundred years or so, it's just that we don't have the capabilities nor the technology to answer them yet.
I respect you belief, and I wont try to convince you to move towards God. As you've mentioned, you did a lot of soul searching and none of them seem to be working. There are only 2 explanations for the result that you had, 1. God doesn't really exist or 2. Even when you were soul searching, you were focused on disproving him rather than proving he exists, therefore your mind was closed when the answer's right in front of you. :) No offense meant here, just rationalizing and analyzing the results of your "test" or soul searching.
I forgot which philosopher said that God was created by humans to have an excuse, or a reason to feel safe. Something along the lines of what you said. There are a lot of philosophers who does not believe. They also have the argument that people believe in God because there's nothing to lose and everything to gain by believing. Most religious practitioners have this mindset, it's a shame, but it's reality. Some just believe so that they'll go to heaven, or they believe so they can resign whatever it is that they feel they can't control or handle to a higher power. a god is a source of relief yes. You could look at gods and religions in that way, or you could try to see it in the eyes of those who truly believe.

That could also be a reason why I didn't feel anything while searching. I was probably focusing more on the fact on how he does not exist then being open minded and allowing the thoughts that he does exist in. Most of the time when people were preaching about God I was just thinking how they could believe such things. I just have had a negative view on church because I have been forced to go, so I automatically have a closed mind when I do go but I can't really help it. Maybe I can let religion come to me instead of me chasing it.
A couple of my closest friends believe in God and they are always so happy when they talk about letting Him into their lives. And how He just helps them get through their day. One of my friends is Christian and she talks about how he saved her from a terrible life. And my other friend is Mormon (it's pretty much the same thing) and she just talks about how more content she feels when praying, and telling Him things. I tried looking into like they do but I often see nothing.

I believe that religion isn't necessary. Some have a very close relationship with God but do not belong to any religion. They, like you have tried looking for God but did not find him any religious sect.
You don't have to wait for a religion. You just to keep yourself open to the graces and glory of God :)
I also went through what you went through when soul searching. There are instances, even now that I smirk when someone from a religious sect (especially the one I belong to) says a fallacy.

I am a God fearer. I love God. He can solve all the problems which happens in our life. Pray to God is very essential. If we want to lead a peaceful life prayer is must. If I won't pray and move away from God, there may be lots of worries in my life. Prayer helps us to become a good person with all necessary qualities. It helps us to love others. It can reduce our stress and anger. If we are with God, all the evil spirits will ran away from us. If we are away from God, they will rule over us. So, always be with God and lead a happy and joyful life.

I'm not anathiest but I'm not a huge believer either. I know there is a higher power and I have read the bible. Ive been to church but not for a while. In my opinion you take what you need out of the bible and a preacher's sermons. But also I don't think HE's going to solve my problems and HE doesn't give me hope. HE won't pay my bills or cure my sickness. My daughter is the same way except she won't go to church at all and she totally cut out religion from her life. HE won't help her find a job or fix her marital problems or her financial problems. There is a higher power but you won't find it till you die because HE apparently doesn't care about us little old people down here.

Wow. That is a very sensible thing to say. Well I agree that there are really some people that sometimes rely everything to God without even doing anything to help themselves. That is then not good anymore. Have a nice day :)

I kinda have the same belief as you. I wouldn't call myself atheist because I really don't know. And I think people just take what they need to hear from the Bible and stuff to help them move along. But for Him to do things for us to where we would just be in complete comfort might be a little much. If we didn't have problems to over come how would we learn anything in this life? He can't just be in everyone's house tending to their every need. I am not a believer, but if He is real then think of all the things you do have.

that's perfectly okay. if you don't beleive in something, you'd be lying to yourself to pretend.
I am religious myself, but I take responsibility for my own life and happiness, rather than expecting the Gods, who have more on their plate than my feelings, to dish out happiness. if I don't find it in myself, they're not going to give it to me

Hi,
I'm agnostic (I think, I don't really care...) so I'm not writing this from a believer point of view, but your post made me think to something I read. It's an extract from a David Foster Wallace speech and I've pasted it here: http://ath.pen.io/
It says that actually we can't be really atheists because someway we have a set of principles we need to follow to not being destroyed but any material thing we could worship.
Someway you stated what you believe in, in your post. You do or don't do things to "be (considered) good", right?
You could say that religion is different because it's a bunch of rules other people made for you but are you sure that "your rules" are really made by yourself? The way you've been raised, the country you live in, and the people you met made you think those were the right "rules" to follow to be a good person or simply to be accepted by people you love.
And that's not really different to join a religion, I think, because both are abstract reasoning and maybe some people WANT to believe in a certain religion simply because it matches their personal set of principles but everybody at a certain point is free to believe or stop believing (I think we choose it unconsciously).
What do you think? Does it make sense? :D

I think it makes total sense. I wouldn't say I am Atheist because I just don't really know. Yes, I stated that I think I am a "good" person because of the choices that I made are similar to the ones that are considered to be good habits by people that I interact with. And in a way that is a religion because I have set my own rules to fallow. I could say that I have my own religion because I do things the way that I believe is right.

You are what I think of as an agnostic...you just don't know, but are open to find out. I think I feel the same way. I used to believe, but as I've grown older, a lot of questions have not been answered. I don't think the Bible is a true representation of how it was. It was written or translated by men with their own perceptions and agendas. The more I read and learn, the more I wonder about the true purpose of religion.

I think you are probably right. I remember finding out what agnostic was from a friend, and saying that is how I believe, but just forgot what the word was. I'm not saying anything is write or wrong, but I just don't know for sure and I'm okay with being proven wrong.

You are definitely going to the wrong Church. There is definitely a God, He is the air you breathe. This is quoted in the Bible. I understand just because you don't see Him, you don't believe. But I tell me if i'm wrong. You did believe in a "Santa Claus" right? You've never seen "Santa Claus" but yet growing up i'm sure you did believe there was one. Whats the diffrence in believing there is a God? I can tell you one. "Santa Claus" isn't real, but God is. You just have to believe. There is no way i'm comparing "Santa Claus" to God, because there is no comparison, but trying to put my point across.

You won't find God in any church, synagogue or any man made building
You won't find him through others opinions, beliefs or religious affiliations.
Where you can find him is through your heart and by taking a good hard look at the world around you.Do you honestly believe that everything around you, the beauty and majesty of this earth, the sun, moon stars the very air you breathe just one day came to be?,by one big bang of energy? in other words, everything wonderful came from nothing? Also the fact that we have a moral conscience, which no "man" can teach us to possess,IMO,is proof that a much higher power has instilled this in us.
You may say this is all a bunch of words that mean nothing to you and of course that is your right, but,i do know that it never mattered what others tried to teach me about God and religion as a child.Once i became an adult, i realized the only way to find Him for myself was through my own logic, sensibilities and heart.

I have been going to several different churches. And none of them made me feel like it was where I belonged.
I believed in Santa because I was young and didn't know any better. It was taught to me by people to make me believe in something to explain something. Just like God.
I'm not comparing Santa to God either, but yeah, ha.

I probably used the wrong word when I said they were crazy. But I just think that because they want to believe in him, things start to make sense because of just that.
Kinda like conspiracy theories. They find something and then arrange everything around it just so it seems correct.

Yea, I was a Christian when I was younger and it never really made sense but I just went along with it. As time went on things started to happen to me that questioned my faith in God. Now as an 18 year old and nearing graduation. I have come to terms in my own beliefs which is not a god or a higher intelligence. but the natural way of things. And the fact that we never know what si on the other side until we are on the other side. Those people who DO believe in God, good for them that they have something to go to when all else fails, but for the people who don't believe in god, good for them too because they have found their way just as the people wo beleive in god have found theirs.
I believe in reincarnation and karma, so. hopefully I will have the same believes when I am with my new family on the other side, or shall i say, my other life waiting to be alive.

I am somewhat the same way. At a young age I was taking to church but I never got anything out of it. For the people that do believe in God, it's good they have something to help them move along. I know I am here on earth and I am going to die some point in my life, but I just find that as the way the world works. Maybe I will just disappear, maybe I'll be born again, or maybe I will live up wherever after I lave the world. But because I don't know for sure I will just live my life the way I want to.

Well, searching for God is like searching for something you have in your pocket. Its just that you forgot it, where you kept it.
To make it very simple. Its a truth, which doesn't need any kind of certificate or approval. Like sun, its there, but if you keep your eyes closed, it would be difficult to see it.
If we start, discussing to debating on it, it will be waste of time and energy. But you can do a very simple thing. Just do which is righteous, which is not against the humanity. Humanity is all we have to follow. In that way you will be close the God or in another words, you will be close the people. I am sure that will one day make you realize that God is within you.

If I had only felt, seen, or heard His presence once I would believe it.
And I have lived in a way that I believed is right. I found myself better behaved in most cases as some people who do believe in God. How can He let His presence be known to people who have done terrible things, but not to me?

I dont believe in God as well. In short, i will say, God is name created by us to make sure we are not great, there is a power above us to save, watch us and takes in right path. But in reality or according to science, its a big bang theory which caused evolution of mankind and others. So I strongly believe its a imaginative image that we created as God. I am happy even without the thought of God. If good happens, they believe its God and bad, they believe its not God. But in reality, there is no such one as God. Though bitter to accept, but this is the truth. And sometimes when i people believe so much in God rather than themselves, i feel bad. But anyways its up to ones belief which we cannot criticize. But ultimate truth is no one such God!

Some of the science I found is just like the thought of God. They take all the knowledge they know and create an idea. Sometimes they can test it out, and sometimes they can't. With the Big Bang Theory they can't recreate what happened. But because it can't be proved wrong, and it uses science to explain it, it is widely accepted.
and I agree with you on the whole God thing, ha.

I was brought up Catholic but it never made any sense to me. The logic just isn't there. I don't think you're having a problem with faith, just with (man made)religion. Think about this for a moment; the Christians burned the Library of Alexandria with all the documentation about the ancient world in it, 2000 years ago. When did Christ supposedly die? When did the bible begin to be written? 2000 years ago. That is only the beginning of misinformation. When people realize the way to peoples hearts and souls is only through kindness and love (that's what God is) will religion begin to make sense to me. Meanwhile, no one is ever going to try to through a guilt trip on one of my kids again! Yes I tried raising them in the church but everything wrong with it came blazing back at me, with a vengeance, when it came to my kids. Good luck finding your answers. I hope this helps.

Well first of all I would like to commend you for your honesty. So I will repay that with my honesty too. I'll be honest by saying that I do believe in God, but I do respect your stand, okay.
Well I am not too religious, I sometimes forget to pray and once or twice I have also doubted if God really exists. But then again, amidst all the mess in this world , all the calamities, I wonder why I am still alive? So that is why I find myself believing that there is a God that keeps the world in equilibrium. Someone who is higher than any of us. I don't know how others or you call it, maybe fate, or a universal force, or nature, or destiny, or a reassurance, or hope, or something someone creates for comfort, or just imaginary... but for me I call Him God. That's what I call blind belief. :)

That's kinda along the lines that I believe. People need reassurance that everything is going to be okay for them if they believe that their God will save them. And sense I have been born into the church, I will probably always have the slightest feeling that He is real. but I would just rather see it for myself.
