Forgetful mommy

I am a mom of two gorgeous boys and I both delivered them via normal spontaneous delivery. I had been given a shot of anesthesia while delivering my first born (I don't know what kind) and I was put into twilight while I was delivering my youngest. I just noticed that after giving birth and after these anesthesia were administered on me, I have been a bit forgetful. My memory is not sharp as before. Most of the time I am lost for words. I've got these at the tip of my tongue episodes always. I very well know what I'm talking about and then suddenly, I have to pause because somehow I do get lost. Do most of the mummies here have the same experience as I do. If this is the case for me I wonder how it is for women who had undergone cs operation and were administered general anesthesia.

I have had 3 children. All with c sections. The first i was induced into labor and then discovered the babys head was turned and I had to have an emergency c section. I had an epidural during labor which didnt work and when i got to the surgery room they gave me another epidural for the surgery, needless to say that one didnt work either. I was put to sleep with general anestieia. My second I had a scedulded c section but because of the previous problems with epidurals I was given a spinal block ( which numbs you from the neck down) same with the third. As far as the forgetfulness, how old are your boys? Lack of sleep is a major contributor to forgetfullness. They way our brain works is like a computer, when we sleep it installs all the updates. It takes all the information that our brain had taken in during the day any sorts thru it. It discards the useless information and selects the important things and saves it to our memory. When we dont get enough sleep our brains cant process the information well enough leading to a "what was i just doing?" feeling. If your boys are young Im sure most mothers would agree sleep is something you might get, or at least not get enough. Mine are 7, 5, and 4 and I still dont get as much sleep as I want. lol. Try taking naps when ever you can, a cat nap here and there might do you wonders! Hope this helps.

We've been through the same episode of sleep deprivation. My eldest and youngest's age gap is 13 months, so when u told me that yours is 11, then i truly and honestly believe you when you say that you feel for me. Thanks for the advice. Sleep now is getting better and a little bit longet with only my eldest son in tow. :)

I hope this works for you. I was thinking about this last night and I feel for your situation, my youngest are only 11 months apart so i know the feeling of going 24/7. As your chilren are so young and sleep may be something that just wont happen, I thought that you might be interested in a vitamin I take. Gensing, and Ginko Biloba, both are proven to help with memory and energy. Hope you find relief soon!

If you notice that you're being forgetful and you think that its because of the anesthetic administered to you a few years back, then its good to take some actions by writing down the things you need to do so that you wont forget about it. Blaming it in a certain kind of medicine wont help you remember anything.

Thanks so much for the response and for the tip. :) i was just sharing what i noticed and was just asking if people have the same experience. it's not that i am blaming, i am just wondering what's the cause and if this will be a permanent thing or just in passing. The tip you gave does help. I do that in some instances just like listing down what to bring, what to buy, etc. But in some instances it is just plain inconvenient. For example i nees to go to the kitchen to drink a glass of water then i saw a pile of dish that needs to be washed so i'll wash it then later on i'll forget about drinking. It's quite inconvenient if i will write down drink water in a piece of paper which later on ill forget where did i place it. Most of the time forgetting happens when i am talking. Sometimes in the middle of the conversation i am lost for words or sometimes i just totally forget the words to verbalize what i think. I guess writing down points in the middle of a casual conversation would sound quite weird. I'll be feeling weird doing that. My aim is not to blame but to trace the cause and solicit some advice on how to improve my memory. I've got several helpful tips above and i'll try if they will work. Probably i'll consult my doctor on my next visit if this gets worse. For the meantime, i'll try to do away with the tips ypu have given. Perhaps it is something i could do to help me better remember. :)

i think it will pass with time..some meds (like xanax) do cause memory loss but if you aren't continuing to take them it should get better. BTW Congrats on your special deliveries |:)

Thanks so much. Anyway, I am not taking any mess right now. Hopefully the forgetfulness will pass. Is it really the anesthesia of am I really just getting old?? What could be the culprit?! :p

I'm just like you. My husband calls this mama brain becaue all I worry about this days is about our son, so it makes me forget some little things, I used to have like the best memories but not anymore, like I want to get something to drink in the fridge, I can just forget after I go to the washroom. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the medicine, it could but I don't know. I had a natural birth as well, it was definitely unforgettable.
