It has been know that often times words that are used in the general public usually with time end up finding their way into the English dictionary. Well now a commonly know slang word, muffin top (Meaning the fat above the pants line that protrudes much like a muffin top), and the very popular acronyms LOL (Laugh out loud) and OMG (Oh my God).
I often times wonder why such things make it into the english dictionary, and why they aren't just some dying trend. What are your thoughts on this?

i think they ought to be included in the dictionary, but a different one, categorized into acronyms or internet dictionary by oxford. It is just right to included them because those words are being widely used by people worldwide now, whether it the internet or or txt.
An those words were being used years ago, the dictionary is the one that is late in adding them.. They have definitions, and can stand on their own, so it is just right that oxford finally recognized them

I see your point. My only problem with that is that they aren't adding the other well known ones, like brb. I wonder why they chose lol and omg.

maybe it just in terms on how early the words are used.. that omg and lol are the first ones to be used worldwide, than BRB... i might be added in the next couple of years.

It`s just popular. And basically EVERYONE knows about it. So, it cant be helped, I guess. I`m not surprised it has been its way on there. As stupid as it is. It`s just too popular of a phrase.

I think internet has change a little bit the way to write expecially for new generation. I think this is not very good and it sounds strange to me that a very nearsighted dictionary asOxford added internet slang word. I hope internet slang will not "destroy" standard british english.
By the way, I always though "lol" was the acronym of "lot of laughing"

Thats really interesting..to be frank, i happened to learn these some few years before and wondering how come a dictionary takes this as common words. Its suppose to be a chatting short formed words or smileys like. This is quite strange to hear

Amazing how the dictionary is evolving. Years ago they would not even be spelled out and known as unknown words. I suppose because a great deal of words are being used so often that they feel they need to include.
But I also believe like the above response they should be in a special category because lol and OMG, although I too use them often somehow I feel they should not be used as common words, especially for someone learning the English language.
But pretty funny that they do include them these days.
