Do you fix your dogs when they break a leg or a bone?

Anyone that knows me knows my dogs are my furry babies. I love my kids more than anything in the world but my dogs are always glad to see me and never talk back. So my oldest dog broke his back leg while we were out flying a kite last summer. I take my kids to the doctors when they are sick, so off the the after hours vet hospital we go. Holy Dog Poop! Those places rake in the money. Anyway, after 3 hours we decided that my dog needed to have orthopedic surgery. $2700 later and 2 days we took Izac home. 6 weeks of therapy and keeping him sedated, which was no easy task with the other 2 dogs. He is up and limping along fine. So 2 months ago, out hiking in the mountains, Izac slips and his other leg starts to swell. Back to the animal hospital we go. They neglected to tell us that most dogs break the other leg after the first has been fixed. Ok, cannot afford to fix this one. My husband brings up a good point. "Back on the farm," he said. "We didn't fix our animals they either worked through it or we had to put them down." We'll putting Izac down was not an option, at least not for me. So, here we are 2 months later and Izac seeems to have compinsated well for his injury, the swelling is gone. He is slightly floppy on the leg but is beginning to chase the other dogs up and down the driveway again. Maybe my husband was right. Maybe, just maybe, we have made big babies out of our dogs by not letting them fix themselves more. I think Izac will be fine. Thank God. And I don't have to finance another dog surgery.

Hello snyderblog and welcome to myLot! I think it was heartbreaking to see Izac limping without being able to help him. Here the vet bills are not so expensive, so I was never in the position of avoiding the vet because of the money. I don't know what I would do if I had no money to see the vet in case my dog injures herself. I worry so much for her, I can't think about anything else when she suffers. Maybe you're right, we have made big babies out of our dogs but I think I'm responsible for my dog's health and I must do something to help her when she needs me.

Yes I do! Dogs are my life! Actually, my wife and I have 3 lovely and cuddly toy dogs whom we bring with to bed at night. They sleep with us. They stay inside the house most of the time. We bring them to their vet regularly for shots and check-up. We remember a time when a dog of ours hardly eats its meals. We rushed her to her vet and sought veterinary advice. We treat them as our own kids. They as well are regularly bathed. Fed 5 times a day and have daily toothbrushing, too. =)

I know exactly what you are talking about. Thank goodness most of the doctoring that goes on around here is what we can do ourselves or we wouldn't have money for food. But I have decided that especially with small pets that are older I will no longer try to have a Vet treat illness or injury which will at best give short term improvement. The money just isn't there, the best I can do is put them to sleep to end their pain. This way I can keep up the quality feed and treatment needed by the healthy rest of the family. 15 Llamas, two dogs and two cats is a large animal family.

Animals just like human have also feelings and survival instinct. As human we usually feel guilty when we ignore our pets especially when we treated them as our family. May you can afford to send your pet to a vet and spent such amount for you value them too as well as your family. But there are must be a limit for most things are importantly be allotted to human needs rather than other living things. Your husband is right, you did what you can on the first time, but when it seems that it would affect your family, might as well you have to prioritize the human needs. Probably you can just take care as much as you can but not to impart them the whole which should be for your family needs. I salute you for your way of taking care and valueing your pets, well besides we all know that we can also relay to them in time of needs especially dogs, which has been tagged as man's best friends. Happy mylotting.

You call your dogs your kids? o_o It`s nice to hear that he is all better now. It`s understandable you couldnt go through another surgery. Money dont grow on tress. I guess you shouldnt let him do certain things he use to do? Take care.
