As many of you know, I've been taking great strides towards bettering our financial status lately. Last year we were the type who'd spend every dime we had.. and often we'd even overdraw our bank account. Our bills were always paid late, we frequently got shut off notices. I even went the entire summer without a phone because our home phone and cellphones were turned off for non-payment.
Well we've come a long way since then. Our bills are being paid on time.. and sometimes even early. We paid a large chunk on our cell phones and are still paying a bit every month to make sure they remain affordable (and if we have a tough month we can skip a payment if necessary). Our bank account has had a positive balance for over 2 months, and we've even set up a savings account that we've not yet touched!
Not long ago I felt like we were being punished when our hot water heater suddenly died and I needed to use some money I was saving in order to get a new water heater.
We also had a few other unexpected expenses pop up which left me frustrated.
However.. over the past month I feel like I've been rewarded!
Hubby had to go get a root canal last week, which we knew would cost $200 (minus the cap.. he'll get that at a later time when we can afford it). We were saving that $200, but I started to get depressed that we hadn't been able to pay other bills since we were holding onto the root canal money. Then, the day before the root canal I got a surprise child support payment from my oldest's father... $200! He doesn't pay often, and when he does it's usually far below what he is supposed to pay (I got $35 a month last summer.. and nothing all winter). So we were able to pay some bills and pay for hubby's root canal without a problem!
Last week hubby got a bonus check. He usually gets one every month. We expected it. We paid our usual bills and even a couple debts, along with bringing the kids to the zoo and going out to eat on Sunday.. and still we had money left in the bank last night before payday.
Today.. hubby got another surprise bonus check. We didn't understand why he even got it.. he's only supposed to get one a month. He called payroll to make sure it wasn't a mistake, and they assured him it wasn't...
I feel these little financial surprises are a reward to us for being so good lately and spending our money wisely!
Has life ever rewarded you for good behavior?

I don't really know but am happy for you. Isn't it lovely to receive money unexpectedly? That has happened to me. When we had our last hurricane we worked like crazy to have all apartments battened down and when this was done, I then went to the Villa to see how close they were to finishing. I tried to phone one of the owners but couldnt get her and so called her brother who is also part owner to assure him that anything that could move was locked away and that the house was battened down. Dangerous - as the house is literally on the water's edge.
As we were speaking, I remarked that the last sheet of ply board was being nailed against one of the windows and when this was done then everything that humanely could be done to protect their property had been done. He suddenly realised that I was on property and yelled at me saying the hurricane had begun (raining hard) and why wasn't I at home? I simply said that it was my job to make sure that hurricane procedures had been carried out and that I would be leaving shortly with the staff as I wanted to drive them home.
About a week or so later when the roads were clear I received a cheque that was a bonus as he was amazed that I would be looking after their property and had not looked after my own welfare first. But although I live near the sea I am up a steep hill and where I live is very safe. The cheque was for US$1000. I get a bonus from them at Christmas too of about US$500. They employ hundreds of people in their businesses but I always make sure that I write to the owners and thank them for their generosity. Word got back to me via an Aunt of theirs, that I am the only person that shows appreciation by writing a thank you letter. But I am so very thankful to be working part time for them. They are amazing human beings. Going to have a cup of coffee now. Enjoy your weekend.

They do sound like wonderful people! It's wonderful that they appreciate your hard work. Is there no way to work for them full time so you can quit the other job that stresses you out so much?

I don't get financial surprises anymore. Unless of course you count making payout here in myLot as a surprise.
But, I like reading stories like yours! I like reading about families doing the right thing. And even though they've had financial troubles before, they are finally on their way.
I hope that these rewars/success would continue on.

We're getting there slowly. We had a set back this week. Not a terrible set back.. but we literally have change left in our account, not even a full dollar. We haven't had that little in the account in over 2 months. But, it's not a negative balance so that's a good thing, and we haven't touched our savings accounts yet either.. another good thing. I knew it would get tougher as we got down to just our weekly paychecks, and seeing this struggle this week we're even more determined to be better and save better.

I think maybe there is someone watching over you, you have worked hard at improving your situation and I think you are being rewarding for that, I really do blieve we all have spirit guides and they do guide us and I think you are being guided very well.

Life does this to me, too. There will be something I think I need, and someone will have an extra and offer it to me because they are clearing out a closet or something. I think this happens because I tend to try to do without because I am trying to not spend money as we work our way out of debt.

I am happy for you and the discipline you are learning. It makes those bonuses really a bonus. I get rewarded often, but cannot tell you an actual time right now, other than finding something we needed when we needed it the most.

I am quite amazed right now. Because we've been behaving so well it seems like we have so much more money than we used to. The bills are paid, food is on the table, yet we still have a little spending money.. and that's not even counting what is in our savings accounts which we have plans for.

Financially I don't think that I've ever really been rewarded for my hard work. There was a time last year that we were really struggling week to week to make sure that all of our bills were paid and that there was food on the table (and yes I did have to ask for help a couple of times). However, the thing about it that does make me feel good, despite the struggles that we've been through is that we are paying off our debt without accruing any new debt. In addition to that, I also know that the end of being in debt (with the exception of our mortgage) is in sight. We only have two more years maximum to go with our debt management plan. We are actually planning on trying to save the money between now and next year at tax time to pay it all off then.

Well, I am not sure if you are Christians and believe in God but this sounds like a stewardship thing where when you take the time to Budget and do what you need too to make sure that all of your bills are getting paid then in turn things happen to where you end up having more $$ for other things like you need too, and sometimes get little surprises here and there as well, and are they not a nice surprise? Glad to hear things are working better for you.

Your story is very inspiring! We really can't tell what will happen next. I have learned that life is not a dress rehearsal. So better implement self discipline the first time.
