A friend of mine recently bought a magic jack from Best Buy, he was advised to get one because the high cost from landline from month to month. Big advertisement on radio and magazines tempted my friend to try one, and the initial cost for him was $40, he has to pay for the equipment too, and the $24 annual fee. He plugged in to his computer, and it was working smoothly. After a couple of days or so, some people tried to call in, there was always an error message indicated that other people couldn't call in while he got his computer on. Then, he tried to set up all over again, the same problem occurred. So, what is going on there, anyone knew? Or he got a bad unit. How would you rate Magic Jack reliability?

No idea I've been waiting to hear from others on what they thought about it. I'd love to ditch my landline if I could w/o racking up minutes on my cell.

Magic jack is very good, i'm selling that unit before. If magicjack is not working for sure the problem is the user or the computer or the system of computer but not the magicjack.
Try to change the USB port, instead of plugging at the back why not try at the front or if still cannot work try to have chat with the representative of magicjack. No, I don't believe in bad unit of magicjack, always the problem is the user or the computer.
Check also the connection of the internet. That annual fee of USD24 is too much should be USD19.95 only per year but the first year is free.
Advise is always think that magicjack is not the problem....

I would say perhaps a misconfiguration of some kind or a faulty unit maybe, because I know a few people who like it and really a great alternate to the regular high paying land line phone not to mention the higher cost.
So I would say try some technical support or return for a new one. If I needed a phone I would use it because the people I know really like it.

I've had my magic jack for almost a year and with no problems what so ever. If he is having an error message, then he should go to the diagnosis page. It could be that his firewall is blocking it or something. The only problems I've ever had with my magic jack, is when my computer is a bit laggy the signal is bad, but other then that its been running perfect. It's a great alternative to the old fashion house phone. I'd give it a 10.
