Just while I was typing away on myLot, my laptop started making clicking sounds. It didn't stop for a whole half hour, so I gave up and tried to restart. Then it came up with a black screen and said can not access hard disk, or hard drive or something. What happened?

I had a problem a few weeks ago where windows would not start up. My son told me to unplug any devices plugged into my usb jacks. A mouse was the only thing I had plugged in. I unplugged the mouse. Then tried to restart windows. Like magic it restarted with no problems. Then I was able to plug the mouse back in and it still works fine.

How Old is the Laptop. It can be a Cable that came Lose if the Laptop isn't that Old. The Hard Drive may have went to if it 5 Years or more. Maybe Dropped the Laptop by Accident. That can do some Damage. If the Laptop isn't Old maybe get it Fixed. Are You Good with Laptops. You can try a Repair Video at You Tube that Shows How to Fix some Laptops. if an Older Laptop maybe Buy a New One.

I actually don't know, because a friend gave it to me about a year ago. It looked pretty old though.

Could actually be a number of thinks. What comes to mind for me is perhaps the fan? If the laptop fan is overheating it would also make sounds and the screen/entire laptop actually shuts down to prevent burning. I would suggest to get it checked by an IT professional because not knowing would mean you would have to experiment with several areas and be too much of a waste of money. An IT person can in one sitting tell you what is causing it. Best of luck it has to be torture when our laptop/pc is not functioning.

I hope this is the case, and not some virus. Thanks for the suggestion.

Reset the hard drive(most laptops will have either a sliding switch or 1-2 screws holding the drive in and sliding the switch or removing the screw/s will enable the drive to be pulled from the machine),and try again.

Hmm that`s peculiar. Maybe its a virus? Have you been running maintenance on your computer? You have to keep your computer clean with an antivirus and a few spyware/adware programs. If anything, bring it to computer shop to check it out.

If so, I wonder if it's because I signed up for so many sites to make money. I only started signing up this week, so I don't know how else I would get a virus.

I don't really have much experience with laptop issues. But it is usually the hard disk that usually do noises. If your laptop has a cd drive try running it and do the command where you can type in dos. then do chkdsk /f( i forgot the steps lol but its easy to figure out) And you say it says "safe mode" can you access it? If you can it might be drivers, viruses and such.
