We grew up with Popeye, Olive Oil, and Brutus! Wheeeck! It's not Brutus but Bluto, so they say. I'm sure I heard Brutus in the black and white cartoons... Well, whatever! But more than the name of the sailor's prime antagonist, now we are presented with real spinach in the grocery stores. The leaves come in bundles, held together by a rubber band. Spinach is Popeye's muscle growing energizer before he dumps Bluto somewhere to oblivion. Popeye consumes the spinach from a can, so I didn't think spinach was merely leaves. But now that the spinach is already in the Philippine market, I say that spinach is just our kangkong or talbos ng kamote which we grow in our backyards. Happy healthy eating! May we be as strong as Popeye and as svelte as Olive, ha ha!

sorry friend, even my wife cant make me eat it... so i wont. i only eat potatoes, carrots, squash, monggo, ampalaya, petchay and repolyo. the other veggies that are not on the list sorry i cant. i also eat corn. i can only eat tomatoes if its cooked already. guess some people are like this, like me. my wife even told me i am stubborn that i will force to eat that when i am old and sick. but still it wont make me eat it. though i can say that our doctor said its okay because i eat a few veggies that some people wont eat like ampalaya and squash. some people just eat meat no veggies at all. so i am okay. thanks for the concern. i bet you and my wife will enjoy eating together. she do that mustasa too and sometimes adds some cucumber as well. but again not for me har har har

Ms. Eileen, I am from Baguio and it is sold in our public market since I was young. But the main reason is I think it's not really appreciated much in the lowlands until maybe a few years back. I hardly see it in supermarkets and it is sold here in a particular season. I like it best when you make it as a sub for basil in making pesto. :)

Gosh! I had been buying all sorts of veggies in Baguio whenever I go up there... broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, lettuce, and no one ever showed me spinach. And when I asked SM salespeople where the spinach produce came from, they told me China, along with the thin China pechay. So, the SM spinach could have probably come from Baguio. Okay, okay, vannyt, I am feeling rather bad for not knowing that. But I'll feel better when I see more spinach in the local markets.

I think I know this when I was one, but I forgot. I wanna ask what's the Filipino name of Spinach, so I can ask the farmers here in our place if they have this kind of veggies.

Ms. Eileen, I think it's a seasonal veggie cause it's not everyday that I see them too. I don't know if it's imported or where it was grown, all I know is they are sold in the market. Our public market seldom sell imported veggies I just don't know if it's one of those few exception. Are we importing veggies about 20yrs ago? I'd like to know too if it`s imported. But those sold in supermarket are most probably imported ones. :)

Popeye was part of a marketing campaign which was actually based on false information. At the time, it was claimed that spinach contained more iron (useful for muscle building) than any other vegetable but somebody actually got the math wrong and made the iron content 10 times greater than it really was! Oops! Spinach certainly is a useful vegetable but it's important to know that there are several quite different plants which are both called spinach. The two which are generally sold as spinach in England (and America) are 'true spinach', which is a member of the cabbage family and related to turnips, and one which is sometimes called 'perpetual' or New Zealand spinach and is a member of the dock and sorrel family and related to rhubarb. While both are good to eat, the latter kind contains small amounts of oxalic acid, so one should not eat too much of it. On looking up 'kangkong' and 'talbos ng kamote', I find that they are both different from either kind of spinach mentioned above. In English 'kangkong' (Ipomoea aquatica) is called 'water spinach' or 'swamp cabbage' and 'talbos ng kamote' (Ipomoea Batatas) is a variety of sweet potato. Both are related to the convolvulus or Morning Glory plant. All this shows that you can't really rely on the name that market traders put on their goods! 'Spinach' can refer to MANY different kinds of leafy vegetable and it may be that, because of the popularity of Popeye, people are selling an unfamiliar vegetable as 'spinach' simply because it will sell well that way!

(It was 'Bluto', by the way. It would be quite easy to mis-hear the name as 'Brutus').

I used to watch Popeye growing up. Spinach is quite a common leafy vegetable in India. But growing up outside the country, I wasn't introduced to the spinach until much later. I always thought what the fuss was..when I would watch Popeye. Is it a horrible tasting veggie that no one has? I'm still confused about it...because I love it in any form.

Do you believe that spinach that grow in our backyards is different than spinach that sell in the supermarket or market? because if there is hi-breed rice there is also hi-breed spinach the leave of spinach during my childhood is not as bigger than those in the market nowadays. Can cook it fried just like fried kangkong, or just boil it with water sprinkle with a little salt that's it. Spinach is good also for anemia.

neil, I used to talk about Popeye to my kids when we ate at Popeye's fastfood. That was a decade ago. I don't think Popeye's was in competition with the food chains we have now. But I was surprised one day when I saw my daughter watching Popeye on the computer. She downloaded the cartoons I thought would only be left as passing narrations. When I asked why she downloaded, my daughter said she wanted to know if I was faithful in telling the stories, and besides, she was curious why I love Popeye. She liked the cartoons, too.

Spinach is one of my favourite vegetables because it's healthy, and it tastes good, stirred fried with garlics. I'm never bored with that dish cooked in that way as it's simply delicious. I love spinach with toasted cheese as well, but i try not to eat it too often as it's unhealthy due to the melted cheese, covering the spinach. Other than that, i would love to try spinach in various forms.

Not only in supermarkets. Spinach were already in the (wet and) dry markets for years now. And yes they come in bundles, and they are quite cheap. Shalots, some "sosyal" onion but is smaller and sweeter and is usually used in salads, are also found in dry markets. They've invaded the dry markets late last year.

hi friend. I grew up watching popeye the sailor man too, and did not believe my aunt when she brought me spinach from the market cause I thought they were suppose to be canned and squeezed just like Popeye does, really delicious when made to soup or fried with a batter similar to tempura. "Kangkong" is water or river spinach, but the real spinach that grows wild is called "kulitis". I also learned lately that "alugbate" is also a kind of spinach ( these are Pilipino words for different kinds of Spinach). Yeah very nutritious

What is kulitis? I would like to squeeze it like Popeye. Now, that alugbate is being taught in primary school but I don't think I have seen one. If these are varieties of spinach and are in our market, I am all for cooking these and eating. Any dish suggestion?

kulitis is true Spinach but grows more in the wild than cultivated, there are a lot of Italian dishes that makes use of spinach, I think even the green color of some original Italian pasta is spinach, for us Filipinos, simplest dish is just turn it into soup with a little beef or ground beef. Alugbate is used pretty much the same way you use bitter melon(ampalaya) or sweet potato (camote) tops on your favorite munggo ( mung beans)recipe, try it friend, it will make you look and feel 10 to 15 years younger

I have had Spinach since I was a kid but I had no idea it was the same as Popey's lol. It's looks different and since Popey has his in a can, my childhood brains could have never been able to identify it and it has a different name here so yeah that would have been kinda tough. I have been eating it all my life but it's just been like 2years (i think) since I knew it was called Spinach lol

It's been a long time since I'd bought produce from sidewalk vendors. We don't have peddlers in our city anymore. And the supermarket had become a convenient agora. I like the air-condition. The flies are nowhere to be found. But the spinach is welcome alternative to our kangkong and talbos. Love it!

So far, the Rustan's, PureGold, and Robinson's have no spinach. At SM, you have to come early for the grocery because the spinach is very much in demand. What I was wondering about is how to cook the spinach.

Looking back in my younger years, Popeye is my favorite cartoon character...hehehe! Children of today do not know who Popeye is. Anyway, spinach is one of the healthiest vegetables and you can't easily find them at the market and very seldom that I can see them in supermarkets here in our place. I have this vegetable stall in the town proper wherein I usually order for spinach, they said that their spinach came from Japan but Japan have banned exporting their spinach because of the radiation, so I may wait till this radiation effect comes low before I can get a taste of spinach.

I think Popeye spinach is what our fellow American called spinach its knows here as Horenza so its not the same with Kangkong (water spinach or swamp spinach). Here what we call spinach is edible amaranth. I personally love Horenza because they taste really good when I stir fry it. Its not like kangkong they had more leaves.
