Poll type topics

Having made a promise to help the newbies and those who are still groping in the dark about guidelines violations I thought if we could all pool together topics that could be categorised as poll type this would help clear atleast some doubts. Even I am not clear on this sometimes.

A few people managed to narrow it down but I will do my best to clarify. I consider something a poll when a post simply asks a simple question pertaining to someone's preference (ie; favorite color, flavor, beverage, etc) or if it seems to be simply collecting basic numerical or statistical data for no other purpose than itself (ie; "how many hours do you sleep" or "how much time do you spend online" or "how much do you earn", etc).

I consider myself as having my head on my shoulder and not so dumb and therefore I am happy when you say "It's been an evolving definition and one that isn't always easy to spell out for people". Having said this how about making life a bit easy for us

If someone asks what one's hobby is and what should be one's hobby. Could this be considered a poll type question?
And even poll type questions do generate discussions and when that happens will it be saved from the axe? In other words any topic poll type or otherwise as long as it generates a quality discussion should not be axed. I hope I have understood it.

It's been an evolving definition and one that isn't always easy to spell out for people. This was the best way to clarify so far that I have been able to come up with.

The way I delineate if something is a poll or not is really asking myself if something can really be answered with a simple yes or no. What proceeds after that usually does not lead to furthering of the yes/no answer.
Asking a question as to whether you do a certain something and if you like something usually right away in my mind I determine that to be a poll. Poll because you are virtually asking a group of people what their vote to a sense is.
It is not phrased in a way where the OP is asking for opinions but more like votes. So my point being is after I cast my vote there really is not room for quality outside of telling the OP why I chose yes or no.
Liking something over the other is in my mind a immediate poll.

Hi HWG!
I see it like that too!
If there is no meat for us to bite on then it is not a decent meal and I move on to another topic where there is something more tasty to chew on

Would a topic such as 'What hobby do you have or what hobby should I have" could come under the poll type category?

Even if there is meat for anyone to bite if it is a poll type question and someone reports it, it is deleted!!!

Some 'forward thinking' about your topic and the way it is phrased should help.
Ask yourself: "Could this question be answered satisfactorily in just one or two words?", "What else am I likely to be able to say as a comment when people respond?"
If the answer to the first question is "Yes" and the second "Nothing much", then is is NOT likely to be a good discussion topic. Either reword it so that it will actively encourage descriptive, original and useful responses which you are likely to be able to reply to in like manner (not just "Thanks for responding", please!) or abandon it!

"Not likely to be a good discussion topic" does not go against guideines but a poll type topic does. It may seem simple but it is not easy to differentiate.

I realise that "Not likely to be a good discussion topic" is a wider definition than, perhaps, the Guidelines suggest but they ARE called 'Guidelines' and not 'Rules' for a very good reason: they don't cover every eventuality of 'things that will be deleted'.
@ commanderxo: I agree with mysdianait. There are occasionally over-zealous deletions and, if you disagree with a ruling, it is always worth stating your point of view (Use the 'Other' section in 'Contact' and, if possible, give the URL of the discussion in question. You can often find this by referring to email notifications of responses or by looking for the discussion in the Activity sortie in your profile). Naturally, it pays to exercise reason and (hopefully) understanding as much as possible and to avoid invective!

allknowing....
Thanks for the response.
;-)
I totally agree.
I once asked a questions that encouraged descriptive quality, and received 34 responses. 8 Months later, myLot deleted the topic, stating it was a poll-type question. It was NOT in any way! I too read the guidelines. However, myLot in its infinite wisdom, was not convinced. As you say; it's hard to differentiate. But myLot should understand that we have a lot of people here who just want to compare personal choices for the sake of interest. That's all.

There is a specific response by admin that explains this situation perfectly - but i can't find it yet
If a topic has nothing to discuss then it is already unsuitable for what myLot define as 'quality' while GoAskAlice did explain that some topics, even though they are polls, if they provoke a thoughtful discussion, will not be deleted.
When I find his comment I will link it here but hopefully he will respond here again.

There you are Diana. "GoAskAlice did explain that some topics, even though they are polls, if they provoke a thoughtful discussion, will not be deleted." Now you understand how difficult it is to differentiate.

It IS difficult to differenciate sometimes but others it is so darn obvious that it stares at us.
For example;
'which pc is best laptop or desktop?' would be deleted
but a topic with a similar title and an expanded topic ecplaining why the user has to decide on either one or the other and telling us that they have no space for a table and that they would use a laptop in bed but that the capacity of a laptop does not suit their needs etc. might pass IF those who participate in it turn it into a QUALITY DISCUSSION which in the end is what myLot want on their pages.

Hi again mysD... and allknowing.
Well, after 3 of my discussions were deleted before, I think I know now what is poll type. But actually, I haven't read the guidelines yet that time so it's okay for me if it was deleted. And now, I kinda learned my lesson.

I got away with one last week, if you could have magical powers, but you could only do one thing with them, ie eliminate something from the world, what would it be. And I suspect it skated by because it created a lot of good discussion about people's reasons for making that particular choice. All I can say is, use your judgment, and sometimes you're going to lose one anyway. I don't see myLot (or the rest of us) being able to put together a complete list, because there will always be something we miss.

Somewthing we ALL seem to forget is this from the TermsofUse:
"myLot reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to reject, refuse to post or remove any posting by you, or to restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to all or any part of the myLot services at any time, for any or no reason, with or without prior notice, and without liability."
Like it or lump it I guess

myLot does not allow poll or gaming type questions of any kind.
You can be the most innocent of persons, and not even a pollster for that matter, but myLot will still delete these types of questions.
I, and a few other innocent myLot friends of mine will vouch for this.
I don't quite understand WHY we are allowed to discuss any and all kinds of subject interests here, if myLot has a problem with HOW we phrase our questions around them.
But be warned.
I know, as I am a victim of myLot deletions of innocent questions.
Cheers;
commander

It's ALL about 'quality', Commander. If a topic doesn't ACTIVELY encourage good quality, descriptive responses, it is not likely to pass muster.
If you read the Guidelines in this light, you will see the reason behind most of the 'Don't's

I don't think anyone is ungrateful here Diana but they are just mentioning certain situations which by airing here some way could be found to take care of them. We all know there is ambiguity and even the most seasoned myLot user will get confused. We have two options here - air the grievances or just move on. But myLot appreciates airing; so why not?

I think we have all made some mistakes but we eventually get used to how things work here and we may all still make a mishap sometimes as it can be hard to get things right all the time.

I agree with you fully. There will be so many who have blundered, blundered by not putting up interesting topics fearing that they would be considered as poll type. I hope myLot will come up with something that will make life a bit more simpler here.

Hi Suebee,
What a great discussion to revive! We've been having a lot of old discussions revived that should have been removed long ago. This is not one of them. I've been here for 5 yrs and sometimes I'm not even sure if something is a poll or not. Sometimes it's kind of hard to tell. Welcome to Mylot!

Thanks sid556. I am quite enjoying the site and am sure I'll enjoy it even more once a few things become more clear to me. I'm sure that once I spend more time on here I'll be able to understand the guidelines more thoroughly. It's encouraging to know that I'm not the only one that's a little bit confused about certain things, even among veterans. In any case, despite any remaining bugs, mylot is an awesome site.

I have been on mylot for 8 days now and am beginning to understand how it works. I think I will continue to learn as long as I am active on this site. Thanks to the veterans pointing out certain things I am seeing mistakes that I have made and it's all a learning process. I've come to the conclusion that almost all of the guidelines are open to interpretation. Even the admins may have a hard time trying to decide whether a topic or response warrants deletion or not. Soooo, in that case I have decided to just continue to do what I have been doing on mylot for the last 8 days and this is to respond to discussions that I am interested in. If it so happens that I respond to or start a discussion that is deleted, so be it. It's not the worst thing that can happen in my world! Besides, I must be doing something right as I got the red star with a 9 in it shortly after hitting 100 posts...I think it was around 125 that I noticed it. I will continue to use mylot as long as it continues to entertain me...and that can be interpreted any way you like...

Well, you see, I have no objection to your proposal. However I do not personally have never refrained to suggest to a newbie, what should and what not to do here at Mylot.
In addition to my personal recommendations, arising from my long experience on this site, I still suggest to all beginners to read the guidelines and FAQs in the appropriate section in order to avoid problems such as the cancellation of a discussion, or even something worse.

But poll type topics did confuse a lot of us including veterans. And this topic has cleared some doubts and also allowed poll type topics provided they generate discussions

i think that the thing i have noticed in the short time that i have been here is the effort that many vets go to making me feel welcome.
while some might argue the pros and cons of this idea i think it is yet another example of how the regular contributors rally round to protect the site.
and the detractors that i have been reading about? who gives a dam about trolls.
