Focusing on one point (dot dot dot)

Have you ever had a discussion go in a direction you didn't intend it to? For example, my dot dot dot discussion. The topic was about picking up habits from people, and keeping the habits long after the person was out of your life. The dot dot dot thing was just an example. And yet I knew when I posted it that I would get a lot of responses on the dot dot dot thing, and not so many on the main topic.
Does it annoy you when that happens or do you just go with the flow? Me, I just went with it. As it turned out, a lot of the responses were fun, dot dot dot or not not not.

Sometimes, though on serious topics, it can be annoying too...

I don't think when we're discussing serious topics we divagate. But when we discuss for the sake of discussing, divagations are welcomed. At least for me they are. I think that this is like in the real life. When I chat with friends, we jump from one subject to another and, in the end, we like to go back to see what was the course of the discussion, how did we get to a certain subject. I like it when this happens in myLot discussions, too.

As long as it contributes to the discussion, I do not really care if they add to it and stray from the topic. Unless of course the response is "I like your post, keep up the good work." Not much to discuss there. I know I pick up habits from other people, just cannot think of one at this time. If I could we could go back and revisit that discussion.

I think I did go back, maybe two or three times. Dots are one of my favorite patterns.

Sometimes I will point out that they missed the point, and you know what? They hardly ever come back...

Depends on the discussion. If it's a serious one, it annoys me too. Especially if it's so totally off topic that it's clear they didn't read and/or understand.

Yeah, that's super frustrating. I tend to ignore responses like that otherwise I'll end up saying something not very nice!

I hate adding to it but I actually have a dot dot dot story and, although it's not quite what I'd call a "habit", it is something I will say occasionally, even long after the originator in my story has long gone.
When I was doing legal transcription there was one lawyer who, every SINGLE time he dictated something, would constantly use "dot dot dot" at the end of most of his sentences. He would say, "Therefore, and heretofore and herewith blah blah blah blah blah dot dot dot." Okay, the 'blah blah blah' part I replaced his actual words with and he never did say heretofore and herewith, at least not in that order, but you understand, right? He insisted that we type that "..." on there, too, misplaced or not, misused or not.
To this day, I still say that every now and then. Yeah, I know, it's sad. Of all the things I could have picked up in my working career, I picked up, "dot dot dot."
Yeah, I usually go with it.

Mostly just communications but still, legal letters. I have a feeling his secretary corrected everything before it went out, at least that's the hope! We, as mere transcribers, were not allowed to change or question anything. Our job was to type exactly what we heard with the exception of sneezes, uh's or umm's and the occasional snort or two. We were even told to type "blah blah blah" if that's what the lawyer said.
They paid us to type what they said, then paid their secretaries to fix what we typed, probably blaming us in the process. I wouldn't put it past any lawyer. (Just in case there are any lawyers here, I have a close friend who is a lawyer and I wouldn't put it past HIM to blame the transcriptionist, either.)

I know!! A have a bunch of figure skating friends/coaches on Facebook and they post all the links to the ISU news . . . one of them http://www.isu.org/vsite/vcontent/content/transnews/0,10869,4844-128590-19728-18885-312988-3787-4771-layout160-129898-news-item,00.html Kinda doesn't surprise me that it won't be televised - boooo . . . I wonder if it can be seen on icenetwork.com - although I don't subscribe to it. See, I had another dot space dot space dot here again!

Hello dawnald, thanks for posting this issue, I think many mylotters dont even read the postings/the topics but just keep on typing without understanding the real topic. It has happend with me too, therefore the quality of the discussion looses merits.Quality of posts and responses matters to me not quantity. Thanks again.

Sometimes it is humorous. I know you and I have both seen people deliberately mislead in a title to see who reads the discussion.

In this case, the discussion didn't really lose quality. People just mostly focused on one point, and not on all of them. But I've seen where things have gotten totally off track because the person didn't read the discussion, or had their own agenda or whatever.

I usually just respond with whatever thoughts, feelings, or opinion on what I read that comes to mind. I don't always go with the direct matter but more what it brings to mind or how it makes me feel. Your discussion on dot dot dot was very interesting and it was nice to learn a new word I hadn't been familiar with before.

Having been one of the offenders (oh well) I usually go with the flow, when I know where the flow is headed..Not that day apparently..But, if I answer that question today when dot dot dot is the subject, am I not compounding the misunderstanding?
Too much thinking too early for me..Enjoy!

Oh I don't really care if it goes south when I was heading north as long as the responses are interesting. But it's funny to see where people's minds will take it...

Hey, I don't care if you focused on the dot dot dot thing as long as the response was relevant in some way.

Okay this one got me think, so I went back to your dot dot discussion where you mentioned habits you picked up that perhaps last longer then a relationship (not verbatim)
So I explained that I too do the dot dot and had no explanation as to why I do it and how I have to refrain from doing so.
So as I did when I initially read it, I went back and re-read it and in the first comment box and the following 2 it was completely about the dot dot and so were your comments.
So I suppose my response here is that I go with the flow.
So now that I am confused about whether your topic was about how one picks up habits that stick with you longer then perhaps a relationship, which was it??
Reason why I am asking is now I am thinking that I over read. Because I usually read all responses and comments before I respond. lol.

The original point of the discussion was about how one picks up habits that stick with you longer then perhaps a relationship, but the dot dot dot thing just took off and I went with it. It's not that I mind at all, I think it's funny. Sometimes things take on a life of their own.

I just kind of put down what strikes me, and sometimes that means I am focusing on one thought, and not all of them.
And yes, it's very interesting.

oops i missed that. i replied on the dot dot dot thingie...oh well sorry for that, i also tend to get out of the focus, even on my own responses and discussions... my husband would often say it is because i am someone who think of so many things and i wanna say so many things i cannot get my thoughts arranged.

No biggie, if the response is interesting, I do not care if it only focuses on one part of what I was looking for...

Haha, well it looks like you won either way.....lol just kidding. But I have experienced this once. I once, used a couple dots (.......) in my discussion before and got a rude response on how those "dots" isn't a quality discussion. I though I had an interesting topic, but yet one person was more focused on the dots than the actual topic and didn't respond to the topic directly. Oh, well still gotta love mylot!

I usually just go with it. Keeping in mind, I understand what they are saying. Sometimes it's so far off base I get confused. Not a good thing when you get confused on your own discussion because of something someone else typed.

Yes I do have some discussions which got a lot of responses when i thought it would get only a few. For me that feels nice and I love replying to every response. But there are some discussions which I make thinking it'll quite some number of responses but they get just a few. I get disappointed then, but only a bit
