Computers... a good thing and at the same time a bad thing..

Computers... friends or foes? That is the question. Nowadays these machines are used by everybody and a lot of people depend entirely on them. That can be a good thing or a bad thing. If you use them too much, you end up being dependent on them. Addictive basically. And in this case it's more on the gaming part. Gaming on the computer can be really addictive. The most common cases are with MMORPG type of games. You start playing and then you can't stop. You just wanna keep getting better and better. These days people are starting to get more addicted to social networks. Especially Facebook. Facebook, this social network is used all over the world and it is an excellent to meet new people, to talk with your already known people, and to meet people that you don't see in a long time. But if you get used to it too much, you can spend whole days in it. And it can be a really bad addiction, trust me. I don't speak by personal experience, but I have some friends who do. But enough for the bad things. Computers also have their vantages, don't they? Just imagine the world now without computers. We wouldn't have half of the stuff we have. Like Tv's and gaming consoles. That's just two examples. Because almost everything nowadays in terms of tecnology is made with the help of a computer or made entirely in a computer. But that second case is mostly software. And you can also benefit from computers at work and school. But it's not really mandatory. So my question is.. would you imagine yourself in a world without computers? And are you the type of person that uses the computer occasionally, never uses it are you really dependent on it? Give me reasons to these questions. You're commentarys are all aprecciated as long as they stick to the topic and aren't flaming/spamming. Very much aprecciated.

I think it's a good thing but the addiction...sometimes we forget to do things we are supposed to, sometimes we stay longer and be sleepy the next day, but that's not the computers, it's our selves :p I love computers.

Yeah computers are both good and bad because everybody can pretty much get on the internet and I mean everybody. Some people use masks to hide behind these computers because you don't know who they are so it is like they are wearing masks and they pretty much say what ever they want because nobody knows who they are it really is a horrible thing. Still the computer is pretty much part of my life because I go on here like everyday so I won't get bored and I pretty much need the internet and computer for college it's like a must because who wants to do their work at school I am not into that, but some people are and that's ok too, but I rather do my school work at home.

You must be talking the "haters" on the Internet. Or Internet hackers. Either way, they both suck. Haters only comment on things saying only bad things just for fun and Internet hackers basically get into your computer and screws it up. And then you can't find who they are or where they live and they are like ghosts. I also prefer to do my school work at home because it's easier and you have more time than on school. On school you have a time limit to use the computer and it gets harder that way.

In my university years I wasn't able to use a computer. Many of the other students typed all their assignments and used a computer to go on to the Internet. Due to not using a computer keyboard in those days I was very fast at writing. That meant that I could write ever such a lot in the examinations. I got into computing when I was a newly qualified teacher. I am way too addicted to the Internet now and this takes up much of my time. My teenage son is way too interested in computer games. In my student days I concentrated on revising. I use my laptop every day and at least three times a day when I am at home. When I go off traveling I take my net book so I can still get on-line. If all computers shut down life would be miserable without My Lot, Face Book and my emails. Booking a flight would be more difficult. Libraries are all computerized and if computers went down they would lose all their records.

So you're one of the people who is very dependable on the internet, aren't you? You shouldn't spend so much time on the internet for things such as Facebook. Go once in w while, but don't over use it. It's better to use the Internet to do school works and resolve work issues and things like that. But of course you got to have some fun times on the Internet, per example, play games. Just don't over do it. About your son, I have a similar case but with my two young brothers. I'm 17 and they are 6 and 10. With they're age they are playing games for 18+ years and that's really bad. Because they grow up with a different mentality, I think.. You should try to get your son to stay away from games.

Well, when I was young I got introduced the computer, it was something fun that I used to spend my free time on, that when I was a kid, I've loved it, so I've decided to study about it, so computer, since I was young, was a part of my life, if I can live without it, yes I can, but life isnt the same thing, people can live without everything thats an object or something you can touch, but people can't live without feelings, I know im going a bit out of the topic but, I think computer is becoming a must on people's lives, BUT, isnt a must, people can definitly live without it... Now talking about games addiction, yes its true that games are very addicting and that only happens if people start playing games, most online, because offline games aren't that addicting because they are always the same thing, online games change by every update or depends on what the other players do or not, so that causes the game to become addicting... Yes, the most addicting type of games is MMORPG, being that "Massive Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Games", which means, everyone can create a character, then level up its character untill its max level, in the max level, there are diferences between every player depending on the content of the game they have, the ones who have most, are the best ones, and the others aren't the worst but they're not the best either... That's the part that the addiction comes, you want to be part of the best, but there's someone whos in that part already, you want to be better than him, so with that, you have to spend time, countless hours, in every MMORPG that happens, its just environment of the type of game... Talking about social networks, most specially, Facebook, I don't like social networks, but that's me, everyone can have their opinion, social networks make people talk less in the "real life" and talk most in the "internet life", they meet people online and then they go meet them in real life, and people isn't what they expected them to be, completely normal because internet makes people look diferent, "typing" isn't the same as "talking", pictures make you look diferent than what you really are in the real life, and I'm not even talking about the manipulated/edited ones, just talking about the pictures, depending ont he perspectives of the picture taken, people will look diferent, thats a fact... And yeah, sorry for the massive text, but this is my comment about this, I really enjoyed this discussion.

Wow now that's a BIG answer. I totally agree with you in the part where you say that people can live without objects and that we can't live without feelings. These material objects are only an addiction to our life to "boost" our happiness. The thing that really matters are, in fact, the feelings we have with people. Without that we would go lunatic. The human being is a "social animal". If we don't interact with other people we can't live normally. We go crazy. Also about Facebook. Yeah we're spending more and more time talking to people on the internet than talking to them personally. And with that we don't develop our social skills so well because we get so used to "talking with the keyboard" that when we go and talk to a person personally, we simply freeze and don't know what to say. We have no topic to talk about and we're simply screwed and we get called snobs. Now it was me who went a little bit off-topic, so sorry about that.

Its very good in may different ways cause it always makes thins easier for us. Its how people make use of the computer that make it bad. If you stay in the computer all day long doing nothing other than stuff you can do in the internet then that's bad enough.

True. If you are in the computer doing nothing "profitable" than that's simply waste of time.

I feel as if it can be a good thing as well as bad. Some ppl dont know how to do anything without technology which at times is not a good thing

Yes, people are getting so used to modern stuff that they forget about the old habits. In the old times we didn't have computers and we lived just as well as today. I mean we didn't have the capability of doing things that we do in the pc like shooping online per example but we could live without them.
