Ok I've this friend who has been teaching me some of Mandarin language. I'm so very grateful that she's helping me because i don't really have the money for some actual classes and don't have the time too . Anyway it isn't so easy learning a foreign language. According to her my pronunciations are kinda funny LOL Anyway that don't seem to be a problem as long as the other person understands what I'm trying to say. But the real problem to me is remembering vocabularies. I somehow can't seem to remember words that she taught me couple of days ago. I have tried taking notes but they don't seem to go into my head. And it's not just Mandarin, whenever I hear some new English words I can't remember them too Does someone have good ways of remembering words?? How do you remember new words?? Thanks!!

I was learning Indonesian, but it's so far from English that most of the words don't stick in my head....

I have a few Indonesian friends and the most I say say is "Apa Kabar". It really is not an easy task learning a foreign language.

Let me ask you - let's say I pay you $1000 for every word you remember, how about that? If you can figure a way out to do that, that's your solution, ahaha!~

Well, if you think that the importance of the vocabularies are equivalent to the amount of money, then you'd do something about it, haha!~ It actually surpasses the material wealth as wisdom will take you a long away. You'll realize that as you grow older & especially when you work, you'd find these "vocabularies" will help you express yourself better & strengthen your communications / PR skills

hun, I sometimes can't remember the words either, and English is the ONLY language I speak/read/write! The roomie says "pointing and going 'uh' doesn't do much for the 'blind chick' " (she's visual impaired)

Don't try to remember them all, just try to use it in a sentence one or two words only every day. I am also learning Mandarin, for e the hard stuff is remembering the character. I tried to write them, but in several days I would forget them, I guess I should treat them like learning the vocabulary - trying to write one or two words everyday. zai jian.

Wow writing would be so difficult, I mean in Mandarin. I can hardly write my name. I keep forgetting the ways. Anyway I'm trying my best and I would love to use it in some sentence but I don't know how to make sentences in Mandarin as of yet

Hi! That happened to me sometime too. When I was in college we have this French classes. I can't remember every word we were taught, or even how to use it! Hahahaha! The only word I can remember now (my French classes were 2-3 years ago) is Au revoir, and Comme ci Comme ca! But I got no problems in English though.

I've red some books about remembering a word more faster in our brain. It was called "unpeg", I don't know if this is the right spelling. But I find this very helpful to remember all the vocabulary you want memorize. =)

I can just say a couple of words and phrases, like I love you, thank you, put oil (or something like that, the expression i mean) and yeah it's so difficult. If I look at the spellings, I can't even pronounce them and the one you wrote there, I haven't reached that far yet

Whenever there is a new word that I am having difficulties in remembering, I often find an object (person or thing or even event) that I can associate such word to it. for example the word 'mirage' which is a french word. Since it looks like a mirror so I associate it to a mirror. In this case I can remember the first sylabble and knowing that it is french, should sound like a french word. I hope you do get what I mean.

Learning a secondary language will only be learned if you continually use it. A bit more difficult then riding a bike where sometimes you don't for a long time and get back on it and all of a sudden it comes back. Well with a second language if you do not continually use it, somehow you loose it. What I can suggest is correlate it like you do songs and song lyrics is something we somehow do not forget. I would try to rythm it like you do songs, maybe that will help.

Hey glad to hear that your english is improving because of mylot. I wish I could do the same here too but I'm just a beginner and I wouldn't understand anything in Chinese at all. Actually I've heard that writing chinese is way too hard so I'm just learning how to speak for now. Hope I progress :D

I never sit down to learn lists of words, I just try to pick them up from material I read or movies (French). Once I've met a word several times, I tend to remember it. But it's a slow process and you have to know some basics in the first place. Anyway, I think that to remember the words you need to connect them to something you already know (like another word from that language) and use them right away in writing, conversation etc. I usually find it easier to remember commonly used sentences (like How are you?, Where are you from?) than separate words.

Wow really?? That's so cool. I hope you have much fun here I have many friends here and they say the same. They say Korean is really difficult to learn. But within 3 months or so of Korean language class, they could make conversations and talk with little difficulty. I hope you learn Korean soon too. Good luck. Korean dramas help a lot for the Korean listening

It is always great fun to learn new languages. I took some French and i found it fun but equally tough. i use to write down whatever i learnt. I find it easy to memorize things if i write them down frequently. Also, i link any new words i learn with a word or phrase that i can easily remember of my own language.

When I have to learn new words I often write down the words on small pieces of paper and place them around the rooms. For instanse the word for bed on the bed, the word for table on the table, the word for closet on the closet etc. That way I see the words all the time and that makes it easier for me to remember the new words. I also like to put small pieces of paper on the walls in the shower, that helps me memorize the words. Another thing that I like is games. I create my own games with the words and try to pair the Danish words with the foreign words.

To learn a new skill take some time.. And you should always practice it. I'm currently starting to learn French and it was kinda hard too. As of now, I am using the tutorials at youtube and it really help a lot. There are other sites too that you may wanted to consider like livemocha. I would like to learn other languages too like Arabic and German.. It's just that I don't have yet the resources. Goodluck! Hope you learn Mandarin the soonest time possible. Put your heart into it. :)

Learning another language is just so hard. In the beginning,I have to write the new words down in a notebook which I can take along. And whenever I have time, I will read and try to remember those words. A few days later, you will find that you have keep the words in mind. Just keep practicing and using them more often. You can feel the improvement soon.
