So Many Books!

I am moving at the moment and am realizing how much clutter I have accumulated in about
17 years.- I always thought that I only bought things I really needed, but now I realize that is not really true. I am a collector of books,- sooo many books.- Thirteen boxes of books or even more.- I got most of the material I read out of the library and still managed to have so many books. Books in three different languages, old and new, they seem to be my love and haunt me at the same time.- It feels as if I move a library.
Do you have a lot of books and wonder if you should give your heart a big push and get rid of them?- When I look at them most of them mean something to me, they have memories attached to them. Some I have outgrown over the years but it is still not really easy for me to throw them out.-

Hi lakshmi: Same happends to me. I am a big book collector. I simply love them. I love to touch the pages. I love physical books over electronic ones and year after year I have collected more and more. You get an emotional collection with the books you buy and read. I can even remember what was happening in my life while I was reading a book and this makes them more important to me.

Starsailover,
Thanks for your splendid comment. Yes I completely agree. This is a wonderful description of what a book lover feels!- A collection of books can show how a person changed over time.- I have this habit of looking at peoples books when I am invited for the first time. It shows me what kind of person someone is.-

you are so right. it is amazing how much stuff we collect over time but moving is a great time to get rid of stuff you dont need or want anymore. i love books so i would have a hard time getting rid of any that i have. i have quite a few antique books too which would be really hard!

Cher913,
I also have some antic books. - I once inherited somebody's private collection.
And this person owned some very nice history books.-And sometimes I passed these antic bookstores you find sometimes in Europe and I could not contain myself and pass them by.-

Yes sunny5u,
I love reading. There is nothing better than a book and a cup of coffee.-
No 'kindle' or computer can beat this.-
But I have to confess that my boxes includes some encyclopedias and dictionaries and such because they are part of the stuff I studied and still use sometimes professionally.-
But fact is if I visit a bookstore I never come out without a book.-

Last year I moved and when getting ready to move is when a person or family see how much stuff they really have got. Lots of things turned out to be clutter. Now I have moved I am told my bungalow is cluttered. In my lounge I have got a book case with three shelves all filled with many books. When I buy a new book there isn't any space to put it. Sometimes I have a throw out and clutter clearing session when some of my books end up going to the charity shop. Some clutter can be emotional so it is hard to get rid of. I ended up keeping old favorites and some books I had when I was at university. Good luck sorting through your book collection.

You make a good point maximax, I realized that connected to all those books are also emotions which have to be thrown out.- Who do you throw those out?-

The great thing about all those books you have grown out of is someone out there hasn't. Give them to someone that you know will love them and take good care of them. Then they will be close to you still. Or the ones that mean a lot you can let people borrow them. If you have a library I say put it to good use. And the ones you don't want to keep there are lots of charities and other places that will put them in good hands. I also have a lot of books. Moving them is not always the fun part, nor dusting them lol. But having them...just makes you feel like you have something special.

Yea, natnickeep I still have to move my books because they are written in languages nobody here likes to read in.-
And US libraries don't like foreign books They quite literary throw them out.

Hey xannex,
You are my twin book lover! I also have lots of timeless, non fiction books, and classics. And I would love to have a library filled with books. I once saw that someone had the walls of his dining room filled with books. - I really loved that. Or a room with a fireplace, filled with books?- Keep on dreaming like I do. One day we will have our library right?- The amount of books for that I think I have - I just need to make my dream a reality.-
I just love your opinion!---
Thanks

I do have a lot of books, most of which I have not found the time to read. That does not stop the urge to buy more that strikes every now and then when browsing one of my local book stores or the websites of those book stores or some other retailer that sells books. I have books in all my favorite topics from dance to music to war stories to New Orleans history. I even have a couple that my mother never had the heart to give away because she had such fond memories of me enjoying them so thoroughly when I was a kid.
I do not have plans to get rid of any of them although sometimes if I feel I have "outgrown" one - be it because the subject matter was just a phase I went through or because I am "coming of age" - or if it's a textbook I no longer use, then I will sell it on Amazon or Half.Com for money. Most of the books I have on hand now are books that I use for the extensive research that I do for my production companies. The dance performances I create require extensive historical and cultural research, and unlike Hollywood, I think it is of paramount importance to have accurate details rather than change things around just to appeal to the masses or for the sake of entertainment. It doesn't leave much time for pleasure reading, but I am still able to squeeze in a few minutes before I go to bed at night.
Even when I am finished with a book, something tells me I may come back to it again one day for something, as each one contains a piece of knowledge or wisdom that I picked up while reading it, or otherwise served as some sort of inspiration to me in some way. Others are so gripping and powerful that they stay with me for years without me having to read them again, however, when the time comes I know I'll re-read them to re-live the moment.

I do not have a lot of books. I had a lot of books but sold them for some money so that I could get some money to go out and eat with friends. I am hoping to save up to get a kindle at some point so that I can collect all my books on one portable device. I do like to read and so it did kinda stink that I got rid of the books but at the same time I had so much stuff already.

I hear ya...I got my own personal library. But they do pile up so I do inventory now and then. And check out my profile to see what I do with the rest. I love books period.

I do have a lot of books but the bulk of them are reference books and these are often quite specialised.
The only fiction I tend to keep are those that I know I will definitely read more than once - my Terry Pratchett books, for example.
Anything else I will read and then pass on to someone or donate it to a charity shop.

Wow! 13 boxes of books? Well as for me I can say I might have at least 6 boxes of them since some books I used to have were given as gifts to my nephews and to some friends. I love reading so much but usually, I used to borrow books from friends and from the library a lot especially when I was a student. But now, since the release of Ebooks, I have not had a decent novel or hardbound book that I have bought from the bookstore. The latest book I had was just a book of poetry I bought last month. I hope you're not having that much of a hard time moving especially with all the books you got. Maybe you could lend it to some friends or give them as gifts.

we have a lot of books at home but i don't really have the much books of my own except those i had in school. i don't really have time to read any other books because i have so much reading and studying to do with my course in college. and now even though i have already graduated, i still have to do even more reading for my exams to finally be a registered nurse. it makes me really very nervous but i hope i pass. i really wanted to also read some documentaries but i just can't, my brain is like so stressed already from reading a lot. but someday, someday after i pass, i can read whatever i want. i come here on mylot when i take a break from studying.
