How do you keep your cat or dog from jumping or climbing on things. I love my cat so much but he can be difficult. What do you do to keep your pets off items or furniture you don't want them on. My cat likes to jump on tables which really annoys me. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks

Nothing. Your cat will jump anywhere and everywhere he can--it is part of a cat's nature. They like to be up high--it makes them feel safe and secure. And cats always go where you don't want them to go. The more you try to keep your cat off the table, the more he will try to go there--and especially when you are not around. You can teach a cat not to claw furniture, but it is VERY hard to keep them from jumping on things they want to explore or sit on. We try to keep our cats off of our tables when we are eating on them, but other than that, we just wash them well all the time! Good luck!

I saw a show with a cat trainer trying to help people with this problem. The cat wanted to jump on the kitchen counter-tops. The trainer had them place the cats scratching post next to the counter. They also put sheets of paper with double sided sticky tape on top of the counter. When the cat jumped up, his paws stuck to the tape, which, of course, the cat hated. So the people would then remove him from the counter and place him on his scratching post. He eventually learned that he hated the feeling of having the tape on his paws, and stopped jumping, and the people could remove the paper from the counters. It seems tedious to constantly have sticky paper on your counter, but cats are quick learners and it probably wouldn't take very long.

My dog likes to jump but not like on the counter or on the couch, he likes to jump when he gets excited especailly when he sees people, he likes to jump on people to say hi. We stop him because he is too big to be jumping, his paw can hurt people, we say Stop to him but he doesn't listen to me, only listens to my husband.

Hello Dominique,
I don't know much about cats as I'm not a cat person. But I can tell you about dogs. You can make them stay off the furniture when you're around but if they like to lay down in a particular spot (on the coach, for instance), as soon as you leave home, they will occupy their favorite place.
As for my dog, she jumps on any piece of furniture she wants. I like that she's like this, I like that she's stubborn and she's a dog with gumption. But she's also obedient because she's off the furniture the very moment I ask her to.
