I am reading the book of Job and I wonder what my friends who are reading the Bible, have found there.
This book has some interesting things to teach us. It answers the question: why do good people have to suffer?
It also shows what happened in the invisible world that time and why God allowed Satan to cause so much suffering for Job.
Job´s so called friends, who falsely accused him for having done something really bad, also learned a lesson.
Job learned something important too. Can you figure out what that was?
The book of Job is written in Hebrew poetry and is one of the greatest works in literature we can read.

Job was the saddest book of the bible I have read. Job's faith was tested but I also see that the devil "worked" God into letting him have his way with God's most loyal follower. He told God that Job would not hold faith if he were truly tested and God fell for it saying..yes he will...you can do anything you want provided he is not killed. So job suffered great loss and illness. In the end he was rewarded with a new wife and children...but what about the other wife and children? Were they so unimportant? I have a hard time with this particular story. I think that Job actually did end up questioning God didn't he..."why hast thou forsaken me?" I read this book as a child and I have been bothered by this story.

Hi, Jen - Why not read the book of Job again. I think you will understand it better now that you are a bit older..
You can read it in biblegateway.com and watchtower.org has an accurate translation.
Job had the same wife all the time, and as he had lost his ten children, he got ten more. So after the resurrection, when the earth is a paradise, he will most likely have all 20 children and lots of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The story has a happy end after all. Everyone learned a lot from what happened.
God allows bad things to happen in our days, but a very limited time yet, and He will end this wicked world soon and make the earth a paradise.
You can read the Bible verses in the comments before in this discussion.

I understand where and why you are taking comfort in this story. There are great things in there to give people courage and faith. I respect your faith. There are just certain things about this particular book that I have trouble coming to terms with. It is hard to come to terms with the fact that the Lord I know would stand back and let the devil have his way...why? He is the all knowing right? To test me? Ok fine..test me..but what about the people that were taken in the process...the generations you speak of were the ones that were regiven Job. The first sons and daughters were taken.
I know there are great morals to the story of Job..I just have some issues with it.

I love Job's story. It tells us how God rewards his faithful children. Being humble in the sight of the Lord and sheltering on God's love whatever state we are is really hard but Job overcame the trials that the enemy laid before him and God being overwhelmed for his faithfulness granted him with abundance in life. Always remember that God is too wise to be mistaken and its not God who let us suffer but its a trials enemy bring to our life to test our faith in our Almighty God.

Yes, God will reward His faithful servants. His enemy can make many attempts like in Job´s case but in the end we will be blessed if we don´t give up faith.
Thanks for your comment..

There was a passage from Job in this week's Bible lesson from my church, Job 37:23 "...he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice; he will not afflict." That was to address the belief that sickness is a misunderstanding rather than the natural state of "man." In my faith we do not believe that good people have to suffer. We believe it is a choice that people make.

If we believe in the Bible, we know that we inherited the state of imperfection from Adam and Eve, our first parents. Much of our health problems comes from that. Jesus came and restored things so that we now have a possibility to live forever in perfect health in a paradise here on earth.
Of course we can do a lot to improve our healt, both physically and mentally. Our attitude can influence our health and if we think positive thoughts, our body will respond in a positive way.
Thanks for your response..

The book of Job is all about learning, and it is very interesting as well.basically the book of job was a crash between God and Satan,God was please with Job but the devil want to prove god wrong.
so as the story goes as angel present them self before god ,and the devil him self also appear.Notice very carefully God and the devil knew each other very well, and even though he was banish from heaven he still have Opportunity to return when he wants.
But on that particular day,the devil have something else in mind.God was bossing about Job,and the devil did not like it.So he told God to remove his protection from around him,and to test him to see if he would curse God.But it back fire on the devil ,he though Job looses everything he still stand firm in his faith love, and trust in God.
So the book of Job is all about learning to trust and have faith even when all hell broke loose around you.

Hi, tash01 No wonder God knew Satan. He had created the angel that was perfect in the beginning, but later chose to be one who opposed his Father. That time the devil was allowed to go to heaven but that ended when Jesus Christ as the angel Michael threw him down to the earth. We can read about it in Revelation chapter 12 from verse 7.
We also see that the Devil has a short time yet and then he will be destroyed in the end.
Yes, you are right, we learn to trust God whatever happens. May we always remember this great lesson!
Thanks for your response!!

Truly a book with many lessons and we can learn much from reading and re-reading that book.
Some lessons I have learned:
Who is the chief causer on mankind's woes
Why God allows suffering
That God can take us through any trial
That the righteous are rewarded beyond measure
That God can do anything and everything
That God's wisdom is beyond human understanding
That is just to name a few things but there is so much more.
Great topic!

Thanks a lot for these thoughts. I appreciate them and especially that God can take us through any trial and rewards those who are righteous very richly. He really appreciates when we love Him and we are very precious to Him.
I was reminded of this when I listened to the words of Jesus a few days ago, Luke 12:6,7 "Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." (New International Version, ©2011)
The lesson was that God knows every single detail in us and can help us in every situation. He can do it just like He did for Job.
One of my friends once drew my attention to a thing that I had not thought of before. Job got healthy after he had prayed for his three friends. Would that mean that we too can be blessed when we pray for those who have hurt us in some way..?? Well, at least no harm in trying..

I'm glad that I don't read Job in poetry because I probably wouldn't uderstand in because my understanding is so limited as it is LOL!
There are two main things I got from Job but one I don't ahve time to speak about right now, it's just that one of my interests is very much creationism + dinosaurs, terasuars and the water dinasaurs. Job explains the actual existance of them in bible times and said they were created by God at the same time as Man, yay!

Hi, blaireth
Do you have any bible verese that you are thinking about?
I looked at Job chapters 40 and 41 and found descriptions about great creatures that God has made but I will have to do some more research on what they are.
It can be interesting to compare different translations of the Bible and see what words they are using. There are many translations in biblegateway.com and New World Translation in watchtower.org - we can always start with them.
But I would like to know the particular verse of verses you are talking about..

One of my favorite scenes in Scripture is the one in which Job realizes his position before God and utterly repents!

Yes, Job repented that he had concentrated too much on himself, but he still stayed faithful. He also learned to pray for people who had harmed him by accusing him for having done a lot of bad things.
Also Jesus told us to pray for our enemies.
Here is an interesting article that also talks about Job´s situation and what was behind it: http://www.watchtower.org/e/19990901/article_02.htm
We also get some thoughts on what causes our sickness.

If it's the same one that South Park used as an example for something we can learn this, keep in mind it's just a cartoon and could maybe have it wrong. It teaches us that god can make people suffer just because he can and he feels insecure and has to prove a point to the devil of all people or things. The one thing I can say for sure though is that is a story and just that, a story, some say fictional and some say non fictional. I'm going with the fiction.

I can imagine that South park has taken this story and made their own version. No wonder many think that it is fiction.
If we read the original story from the Bible, we will get another picture. And if we really want to see if it is true, we can start doing research.
One person who started this kind of research was a nuclear scientist, who wanted to prove that the Bible was not true. He tells his story in the following article:
http://www.watchtower.org/e/20040122a/article_01.htm
I suggest you do your own research..

In my opinion, the book of Job shows us that being a Christian is not an easy thing. Suffering and persecution comes with it but the rewards are greater than we can imagine. The important thing is to have faith in God. He is the source of all our needs. He will never leave us nor forsake us especially in times of trouble. As it is said in Matthew 6:33, "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

You are right, if we follow the scripture you quoted, everything will be right in the end. God can give us strength for going through whatever comes, before His Kingdom rules over all the earth as we can read in Danel 2:44 (New Living Translation)
"During the reigns of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed or conquered. It will crush all these kingdoms into nothingness, and it will stand forever."
I have found a lot of comfort and strength by listening to the Bible books that I have downloaded from jw.org. Maybe you would like to listen too.. Thanks for your encouraging comment...

I think my favorite verse is this: Job 5:17

Blessed is the one whom God corrects;
so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty
We know our parents love us when they care enough to discipline. When God, our father, corrects us, we know that He truly loves us.

Yes, kenzie I agree. God is a loving Father and He knows what is best for us. He wants us to live for ever in the paradise he has promised and that is why he teaches us so that we can belong to those who has the right qualities for living for ever.
Even Job needed to learn, and so did his friends and his wife.
Jesus reminded us in Matthew 5:5 (New International Version, ©2011)
"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."

If I remember correctly, it is in the closing chapters of the book that God answered Job. And the story of Job simply tells us that God can do anything to us and we have no right to to question Him.
Job, on the other hand, is faith immovable as a rock.

Yes, Job was an example for us in being faithful. God allowed this test to show all His creation that a man can stay faithful - no matter what our antagonist can do to us.
When we read the other parts of the Bible, we see that God will not allow more than we can go through and He is there to give us strength when we show that we want to do what is right.

the question should be why does the faithful suffer more.
the answer: because God loves us so so much! and satan can't accept that he lose a soul to God, remember that satan boast that he is better and he should be a god. So whenever there are faithful person who is completely faithful and devoted to God satan attacks that person, God allows it because He knows that His faithful children will become stronger and will not turn their back on Him, that whatever happens they will remain faithful, just like Job.

Yes, it is a privilege to be part of the universal challenge and show that Satan is wrong. We are very precious to God and he wants to give us strength to go through the trials and also rewards us if we stay faithful.
He would love to give us all an eternal life in the paradise as he planned from the beginning.

That is great - you started to do some research and found information..!!
I will give you some links you can check too. The book of Job has so many important lessons to us so it is well worth the time to learn more about it.
You find the Bible in many languages in biblegateway.com and watchtower.org has the New World Translation in many languages. There you can also make a search on different subjects and see what the Bible says about them.
Thanks for visiting..

I learned many things from the book of Job: The virtue of patience despite adversities; It is not God who is the source of our human suffering, he only allows it to happen; we are owned by God and to Him we shall return; Our material possessions are just temporary, all of these may vanish.

Yes, even if Job got back what he had lost, and much more, I´m sure he kept the right view on material things.
God allows the suffering until His Kingdom takes over the earth and brings the paradise that he has promised.
Psalm 37:10,11,29 describes it very beautifully. "10 Soon the wicked will disappear.
Though you look for them, they will be gone.
11 The lowly will possess the land
and will live in peace and prosperity.
29 The godly will possess the land and will live there forever." (New Living Translation)
