There have been many heated debates in the area in which I live about having metal detectors in the schools. When I went to school we had metal detectors in the high school levels and the elementary levels. The metal detectors did not seem invasive to me because I never had anything to hide. If your backpack went off then there were security and teachers to search through it to see if there was anything harmful in it. For me it was reassuring, knowing that it was very difficult for someone to sneak in a harmful item such as a gun or knife.
Now those same feelings reign over me as others argue that metal detectors are an invasion of our childrens privacy. Myself personally, I think it is a great idea because when my child goes to school she will have nothing to hide, and it will make me reassured that she is safe at school from the antics of other children. There have been case after case of children very young bringing guns or knifes to school with clear intention of harming other students, so not only will there be metal detectors in the high schools but also in the elementary schools. For me I see it as a safe guard, that anything harmful can potentially be caught at the door before any harm can be done.
Do you think that metal detectors should be in school? Do you find metal detectors to be a safe guard or an invasion of privacy? Would you prefer metal detectors in your child's school?

I want to say that it is wrong. That there is no need and that they are not needed. Sadly I cannot. There are kids all over the place with some serious anger issues. Broken home make for angry kids. Few make it through them with out serious anger issues mostly because the parents play games, but I go off track. Due to these kids anger issues it is necessary to have things like metal detectors, police officers and at times bomb sniffing dogs. I used to work in a school system in NJ. We where in a good area. I saw kids who had the money, the toys, clothes everything they could want act out in some of the most absurd ways, and I know all the divorcees will be mad but all too many where angry because there homes where either falling apart or already ripped to shreds. Some not all but some could not express these angers in any way but violent ways. This was one of the determining factors to me home schooling.

I agree that it would be absolutely great if we could say that no school anywhere should need metal detectors, but unfortunatly the world we live in today does not allow for that. Violence can be any where even in the best of neighborhoods like you have said. That it does depend on the circumstances and anyone can become unhinged and do crazy things. Thank you for your post.
