A Toxic Workplace. What would you do if you were me?

I am the youngest employee and lower in rank. my direct supervisor doesnt practice what he preaches. He complains everybody for being tardy but doesnt follow the rule himself. My direct senior complains about everything from commuting to wages but hardly ever works herself. It seems that she only comes to the office to complain. Most tasks, including my senior's, are sometimes dumped on me. I have tried quitting, but I have already committed myself to the job. The wages are indeed low but what can we do? we work for the government, not some finance and banking institution. My boss already knows about this, but it's never really common in our company to fire people. It's either you take an indefinite leave or you resign. We're too close and intimate to terminate people just like that. It's really getting on my nerves. should I leave or stay?

A warm welcome to you to myLot! Sounds like you are very committed to the job and leaving will ultimately be your choice. What I recommend is that you perhaps quietly seek another job. Do not let wind to your bosses that you perhaps are planning on leaving. Doing so means they may be rid of you first. Staying would mean nothing will change as they are the Boss and do not see them changing their ways unless you can convince them of reasons why they as bosses should change. Best of luck and take sometime to think things through because it is easier to get a job when you have a job then when you do not.

Thanks for the warm welcome :) In my anger, I accidentally let it slip a few months ago that i was planning on leaving, however, in the next few weeks, I saw an increase in paperwork. I handle major tasks now despite my level. I am thinking of doing freelance jobs. What do you think? I havent yet given up hope that my colleagues will be considerate or am I just being too optimistic?

Have you done freelance jobs already? Reason for asking is how is the workload and will it be enough to pay bills/survive and is it secure. What will you do if the freelance job does not pay enough? Slipping is okay so as long as they have not taunted in trying to make you quit. If you have not done Freelance work you may want to do some on side while you work to get a feel. See I was on this discussion a bit ago where the Original poster stated she quit her job and will do freelance work, but she has about 1 year of savings and has already been doing the freelance so she knows what she is up against. So I suppose the real question is can you afford it if the freelance assignments to not keep you busy enough, if yes then you should be fine, however keep in mind that work today is not as easy to find as it was years ago. So if you can't take the risk with free lance assignments then quietly look for other work, so they are not aware that you are.
