I think that it is interesting to travel by train in the day time because you can see out of the window and look at the passing scenery. In the night time it is sometimes possible to sleep in a bunk. I have got a Friend's and Family Rail Card so I can get cheap train fares in my home country. When I was 18 years old I traveled around Europe on an Inter Rail Pass. I stayed in youth hostels so it made a cheap trip. I think that much time can be wasted at airports and going by fast train can go quite quickly. I think seats on a train are more comfortable and have lots more legroom that on a plane.
Do you enjoy traveling by train?
What do you think about the comfort of a train seat compared to a plane seat?
Have you been on some lovely train trips?

Yes maxima. I love train journeys. I prefer this to a plane seat any day and if only there is no time constraint , I would love to go by train especially with my family. I have had some unforgettable train journeys , all within India. Some during my college days, where I went for a vacation to far off places are unforgettable indeed. THose days , train journeys were different.THere was not much facility to eat in trains and the food provided in stations was not up to the mark. So, we used to pack wonderful delicacies for two days and ideal food that would retain their flavour and freshness. When the company was good, it would be such a grand picnic. I have travelled for two days from south India to far east and far west India.
EVen in recent years, I took a train trip via the Konkan raiway. I know you are an avid traveller. If ever you get achance to visit our beautiful India, do not miss this Konkan railway. It is a picturesque treat via the Western ghats and the west coast, with imposing mountain ranges on one side and glistening backwaters of Kerala on the other side.

I haven't had the opportunity to take many train journeys so far..Living in Northern Ireland, the rail infrastructure was pretty much ripped out once road transport was becoming established-(Late 50's,early 60's it was nearly gone) So Rail travel in this area where I live is mostly a matter for nostalgic reminiscence, unless you live near the remaining coastal rail line that goes around the North of the country, and the cross border link connecting Belfast with Dublin in the Republic. Visiting GB,I've travelled on trains in Scotland and England,The "Subway" in Glasgow and the London "Tube",and when flying into London on visits would take the Airport express trains in and out of the city.Train travel in Scotland for Me is nostalgic,as I haven't lived there in 30 Years..whereas In England it's still relatively new to Me,so I am looking around as I travel.I caught a little of a TV programme recently, hosted by Richard Wilson on what it was like to travel around the UK by train..it didn't seem to be all plain sailing..

Though train travel around the north coast is possible, going across country by public transport means taking the bus..Though I've been to the Giant's Causeway a few times before,I honestly don't know where the nearest train station to it would be...Translink is the Umbrella public transport network here, covering rail and bus services,so their website can allow you to plan journeys by whatever means would be available while here.

I haven't ever been to Northern Ireland. If I did so I would be keen to visit the Giants Causeway. I took a day trip to Dublin over in the Republic of Ireland but due to a rough sea it turned into an overnight trip. In Britain the train lines have their particular hubs like London, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow. In the past there was British Rail now all the train lines are owned by different companies. Like where I live we have First Great Western.

I have not had the opportunity to travel by train in the US (just too expensive) but I have in Spain, France, Italy and in Morocco and I quite enjoy it. Especially the rail in Paris (train/tram/subway). It can literally get you wherever you need to be for a very low cost (wow something that doesn't cost a lot in Paris!).

Hi Zelo. It is a shame that train fares in the USA are so very expensive. I booked on the Internet in my home country then picked up my train tickets in the station at Los Angeles. Yes, the metro in Paris is quite cheap. I am pleased to hear that you have liked traveling on trains in France, Spain and Italy.

I have been on a train for a very long time, so I don't remember whether I enjoyed it or not, however, my daughter lives in San Francisco Bay Area where the gas prices are skyrocketing, so she rides the train to San Jose, where she works every day. She said that she will never go back to driving to work because of the peace she gets just from sitting and reading the newspaper and leaving the driving to someone else.

I am happy for her as well. I am back in college and I drive a big Buick, so you know how badly I am suffering at the gas pumps. I wish the had public transportation that was convenient and safe, but I am a night student so I think it would be safer to drive myself.

Last year, we took a train ride that ran parallel to an interstate highway I frequently use. Instead of a 2 hour drive, it took 4 hours to get to our destination. Except for the lost time, we enjoyed our time on the train. It was relaxing, and very conducive to taking naps. As opposed to being all stressed out in driving on the highway.

I usually travel by train for my winter and summer vacations. I like to get a berth ticket so that I can sleep all the time till I get to my destination because it takes me more than ten hours on train for such a long distance. It is enjoyable to sit on a train for those beautiful sceneries, especially when you have a window seat.

Hello Williamjisir. It is excellent that you travel by train for your summer and winter vacations. You are sensible to get a berth so you can be comfortable in the night time. I once had a sleeping berth for a day journey. The train had come from Istanbul and it was going to Bucharest. I got on that train half way through its journey and it arrived 4 hours late.

well train trips are faster if u minus the waiting of checking in and immigration at airport, but sometime bad weather does not effect the train also. However, sometime i have motion sickness and travelling in train is quite taxing and the cramp seats and the shaking and also the noise is quite loud. However if the distant is extreme far better take aeroplane if the distance is less then taking train is nice to have scenery views.

Thanks for the photo of the train. A train journey in my home country is quite smooth. It is a shame that you suffer from motion sickness. I find a train has more comfortable seats than a plane and there is more legroom. I understand that trains vary between country. When I saw the second class on a train in Finland it looked better than our first class.

Maybe the experience to travel by train will not be the same in your country.
I am sure the advance technology and the nice scenery will provide a comfortable train services to the passengers along their journey.
I my country, I hate to travel by train.
When I traveled by a cabin without the air-conditioning, I were sweating, full with dust and shaking.
My ears were irritated by the noise in the whole journey.

Nowadays, my country is using the electric train. I did travel from my hometown to the capital few times.
The seat was uncomfortable and hard. The actual journey will take an extra of 30 minutes to reach the destination. Too many interval stops. The noise of the wheels were irritating my ears too.
I never like to travel by train at all.

Every country offers a different experience by train. I traveled by train in Malaysa and found the journey enjoyable. I got a sleeping berth from Butter Worth to Kuala Lumpur. I found the berth only about 5 foot 6 inches long.
I am sorry that the air-conditioning wasn't working well enough on the train that you went on. The interval stops pick up more passengers. I find the noise of a train enjoyable and relaxing.

Traveling by train is a way of relaxing and enjoying the view as you travel on to your destination. It is a journey of comfort, tranquility and ease. there are quicker modes of travel but trains can give you solitude and just let you enjoy the ride.

Unfortunately we can't make it here in the Philippines because we are across the islands. So we would be enjoying traveling by ship. How I wish I could travel in Europe in order for me to ride trains and see the sceneries someday.

Most of the times I enjoy travelling by train, I can get a good seat. I mean, when I'm near the window. :D But there are times when I don't like travelling by train especially when I have no one to talk to. Haha.:( I usually travel alone.

Yes, it is great to get chatting to people on a long train trip. I was on an 8 hour train trip from Perth to Kalgoolie. Some young children were sitting near me and they asked their parents "Are we nearly there yet"? before we got out of Perth's suburbs. When I traveled from Cairns to Brisbane I went to the club loco car. There were some interesting people to chat to.

I find the idea of traveling by train so romantic and appealing. I actually have no chance to get to do that in the near future and I have not done it in the past. I imagine it would be so leisure and relaxing. You can meet with people in the train and visit the different places where the train makes a stop. Travelling by plant is horrible unless if are the rich in the first class cabin.

I think that traveling in a second class sleeper is really comfortable and relaxing. Then the next morning I wake up feeling very fresh. I always travel in economy class when I fly and trying to sleep is hard plus uncomfortable. I hope that you will get to travel on plenty more train trips in the future.

I enjoy riding trains. And, yes, it is easier to move around. But I learned my lesson about long-distance train travel when I was enroute from New York to Texas.
With all of that speed, and gentle rocking, for a long period of time, I developed motion sickness. I woke up in the middle of the night and it was totally dark outside. Then I had the wierd sensation that, instead of moving horizontally, the train was tilted to a 90 degree angle and we were travelling vertically! I had the same experience when I looked at other objects inside the train.
Now I know. For long distances, disembark during the evening and stay in a hotel until morning. If I can't do that, at least I will carry motion-sickness pills in my bag.

Maybe you are better with short train trips than long distance train journeys. I am surprised that you got motion sickness on the train from New York to Texas. That was a nightmare of a trip for you feeling that ill. It is good idea for you to get motion sickness pills. Good luck.

I not enjoying travelling by train because I have to share coach with other person than I hardly knew with my family. Secondly, I must follow train schedule and time, and prefer to travel with my own time and able to stop by anywhere I like, whenever I feel to stop. This privilege we won't get by travelling with a train

I traveled in an 8 person part of a train carriage in Romania. It was lovely that some of the people were able to practice their English skills with me. The old lady acted in a very amusing way. I tried hard not to laugh because of what she was doing.
Going back to Bulgaria I had a very memorable time. I booked a ticket on the first departure of the morning but the train was delayed so arrived late. It got me into Bucharest minuets before the only train of the day to Bulgaria. I bought a ticket and ran to the train. I got on it with seconds to spare and off it went with me on board.
At the Romania and Bulgaria border I saw the Bulgarians doing some smuggling and they bribed the customs people with US dollars!
