Accommodation choices

I think that the choice of accommodation changes as a person gets older. Younger people like to stay in a tent at a campsite and stay at backpacker hostels. I think that a superb choice of accommodation is a private room. I found a room in a village in Bulgaria. It was above a hair dressers and it only cost $10. When there are children in a family they need a hotel or guest house. Some backpackers also have private rooms as well as dorms. A five star hotel costs a lot of money and it gives a person luxury.
What is your choice of accommodation when you travel?
Did you have a different choice of accommodation when you were younger?
Have you ever stayed in unusual accommodation?

Hi Maxine,
I had very different accomodations when I traveled when I was young. For me the change came with the discovery (when I was middle aged and my husband was ill) of the timeshares. That meant reasonable prices for luxury accomodations. Better still, in many places we could have apartments and that meant savings and the diets my husband needed.
In this trip to Aruba, I spent about $30 a day in lodgings a day and that included a good kitchen, a pool, a free shuttle to the beach and internet. I also had those exersising machines but I only used it once. There were other ammenities, but I did not chose to use them.
The most unusual accommodation for me was the cot aboard my friend´s sailing ship. I had never sailed at it was a memorable experience.

Hi my friend Marguicha. I know that you found the timeshares very comfortable. It was a shame that your husband was ill and needed a special diet. I loved hearing about your time that you spent on your friend's yacht going to the San Blas Islands. I imagine that a cabin on a sailing ship can be tiny. I remember staying in a stationary train carriage in South Africa and there was hardly any room. I had such a struggle to fit Leo's travel cot inside that tiny carriage. I liked seeing the view of the beach from its window. I think from the sounds of it you got excellent value in Aruba where you stayed. It is lovely when accommodation includes Internet access I think. Hug.

Dearest Marguicha. I know what you mean about your husband's illness and how happy he was when you stayed at the time share. You used your time with him well making sure that he still enjoyed life. Leo is a very keen traveler. Now he has been to Portugal, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, South Africa, Canada and Colombia. I like to watch 'A Place in the Sun' but I wouldn't want to visit the same place every year. I admire the way you use your on-line earnings for your traveling. Hug.

Dearest Maxine, My husband´s illness was something that we got used to, knowing all the time that we were fighting against the inevitable. But life is like that all the time. I´m sure that for you Leo´s condition is something that brings you some problems everyday, but it has become part of your life. It was the same with my husband. And as we knew that time was against us, we tried to use it as well as we could. When I think of how I bought the timeshare (I did it, not him) it was because the first time we were there he had so much fun that he seemed that he wasn´t ill at all.
Thanks to my timeshare I can have very good accomodations at a price I can pay. I can even get some getaways at some placs that are on sale. Of course, I cannot pay for the air fare to go there and use it all.

I agree, I liked tents and I would have liked hostels. Now I'd like a private room. I like Bed and Breakfasts. I love the B and Bs I'vs stayed at, they were wonderful.

If I were to travel alone, I will prefer to stay in a low cost hostel rather than staying in the expensive 5 star hotel. I just need a place to rest and not worth it if I were to spend more just for a night stay, but if I bring along my children, I will definitely stay in a better hotel for their comfort. So, it doesn't matter either I am older or younger. But if I am rich, of course I will choose a better accommodation to enjoy my life.

my boyfriend and i travel every year. he chooses expensive hotel and i always disagree with him hehehe. he always go after the service and quality and all that. but i only want those cheap hotels so we can save money and would rather spend the money shopping and for food. but he always tells me that he always wants me to feel comfortable. he doesn't ever want to bring his girlfriend to these small and cheap hotels because, another thing is, he also wants us to be safe. he also looks at the surroundings of the hotel we stay in. well, i really appreciate what he does, but sometimes i feel bad about the money we spend... just for the hotel, already makes me feel bankrupt

You and your boyfriend choose a different price range in accommodation it would seem. You have a more sensible attitude so stay at an economical hotel and he wants to always take you to a pricey hotel. When I travel what means most is my days out exploring and so I can enjoy staying in a simple guest house that isn't too expensive. When I went to Tikal National Park I found a lodge room for $33 and some backpackers I met were sleeping in hammocks.

I also am trending the other way around!
I started off staying in heavily discounted five+ star hotels when I was young & silly & now I like caravan parks!
I don't have issues with the costs. I think there's so much more to it. In hotels, you're in some pretty high density living, sleeping at close quarters to others. I've never really had a good night's sleep in a hotel, no matter how good. Everything including the air seems to be shared with others you probably wouldn't enjoy keeping company with in daily life. I think it's all about space, or "head space". I like people in caravan parks & get on with them better too. Whether you're in a cabin or tenting it on the grass, the proximity to nature, to the ground & the exposure to the elements makes for a better experience in a caravan park. Don't get me wrong though - I was glad I was in a solid hotel room when that storm hit the Gold Coast!!!
I'm not sure if it counts as unusual accommodation, but I did stay at a pure vegan, environmentally friendly eco-bed & breakfast establishment, newly acquired & renovated in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2004. It was certainly unusual back then, although there were two other locations doing the same thing on the island as well.

I agree, choice of accomodation changes as person gets older. When i'm younger in my teens, i like excitment, new adventures, and i have no qualms spending the night in a tent, though it can be cold or raining out there. The excitment to spend my night outdoors is enough to warm me up. As i'm older, th excitment is no longer there, because it's nothing new anymore. I don't go for excitment, but comfort, or scenic views. It has to be money well spent as well because it's out of our own pocket now, unlike the past, where parents pay for everything.

I stayed in a small beach resort with open white sand the smell of the summer breeze the mouth watering dishes being served with tasty deserts that's what accomodation means to me, snorkling, diving, whale watching, and wakeboarding.

my feelings are just the opposite. when i was younger i loved luxury hotels with all the frills. now that i am older i prefer hostels over hotels anyday. i recently stayed at a hong kong hostel with my friend for a few days and we loved it. we saved a fortune by not going to one of those name hotels. i just want a comfortable place to flop over night- i am out all day anyway. i am not fussy and as far as i am concerned- the simpler the accommodation- the better.
