it depends what sort of pictures you enjoy taking. if you feel like your creativity is restricted by the camera you are using, a DSLR can be the answer. it allows you to control more aspects of the picture than a compact camera, like depth of field and shutter speed. a compact camera finds the best settings for the light levels and distance it picks up, but it doesn't know what you are trying to capture. with an SLR, you can control it. you can focus on whatever part of the image you want. you can have everything in sharp focus, or just the subject, with the background less focused to prevent distraction. you can have deep or shallow depth of field, you can use shutter speed to create different effects in dark or light conditions. much more creativity with an SLR.
