At what point can you say a band is "famous" and no longer "unknown"?

Well for me a band is famous if the band members are walking in a unfamiliar street and somebody knows who they are.
I have seen some bands that have been on TV but no one knows who they are

It is safe to say that a band is still famous if they still earn sufficient amount of money and appears regularly as guess in TV shows. To add, if they consistently win awards as well as their song is being played over and over again on the radio.
