During my practice teaching I was assigned to one of the premiere school here in the Philippines, which is Mandaluyong science highschool. They said that Science highschool was "The home of the Brainy"because all of the students stuying here was scholar and they took entrance examination before they enroll,in addition if they past the examination they need to maintain grade not lower than 85.In my situation,I handle English 1 and speech and drama class I enjoy the discussion and I also learned from them,It so happened that they have a new math teacher in which this particular teacher was not that good in English, student always react whenever the teacher got a wrong grammar.tHAT'S why I suddenly feel concious with my grammar! What about you?are you concious too?

As an Education graduate whose major or field of specialization is English-Literature, I really must! Besides, as a teacher, regardless or major or field of specialization, he/she must be fluent and flexible in the English language, thus, practicing at all times correct and proper pronunciation and enunciation of the words, phrases, and sentences delivered. After all, students emulate us in words, actions, and thoughts. We are mimicked by our students even outside the four walls of the classroom. We are even believed more than their parents. So be extra careful and conscious enough with every word you say because teachers are considered the molders of virtues, the provider or wisdom, and the ones who enlighten the minds of the young from ignorance. =)

I like the way you express yourself. You are right that being a teacher regardless of thier major must be concious in thier grammar. As you mentioned students try to immitate us,so if we commit lots of mistake, the tendency now is they will also do the same.

Yap, you're right. In addition, as their secondary parents, we must always "Walk the talk" and "Practice what we preach" at all times. Happy myLotting. See you around. =)

For me english is my second language as we Filipinos have our own mother language which is Tagalog. i am not that concious when it comes to grammar as long as i can understand what that person is talking about, go on. It's not everyday we are using English or it's not the whole day we're talking in English. So I understand why others can't build a sentence well. Even me, i am a Filpino but my Tagalog is not that well, because i am Bisaya.

While reading your comment I giggle! You admit that you are a Visaya, you know what my visayan classmate excell in english they even employ in a call center industry that's why I salute visayans.Going back to the topic sometimes if I took to a foriegnerwhich is not a native speaker of english I never mind the grammar as long as I understand them but when it comes to my students i need to be aware with the proper usage of grammar in order for me to meet thier standards.

yeah many says people from visayas are more fluent, but it's a shame for us that we cannot even pronounce Tagalog words correctly (some I mean, not all). heheheh. Its maybe because loads of school in visayas and mindanao are strictly implementing the rules of not talking in vernacular while inside the campus. I strongly believe on that, and hoping all of the schools in the Phils. will implement this kind, to make our students feel comfy while talking in English and of course to avoid grammar failure.

Dear friend, I am not so good in my academics, moreover I do not like to make any mistakes intentionally. I do like to have myself a better grammar. Hence I try to use my better side here also I hope I could better my grammar and english when I am involved in mylot. But if those students are really good in their grammar, they may not compensate that with maths with a maths teacher. I hope God do not give everything to every one.

We are not Americans anyway but still English has become a second language world wide. It might be an advantage for a non English speaking national to be good in English because of employment opportunities abroad or even to do business. On the other hand no one has the right to humiliate people who cannot speak good English.

Hi! Sometimes even we did not intentionally hurt the feelings of others we did it by our action unconciously.Somehow this highschool students are not so conciuos with there action, they are really Good academically,I must admit that they did even better to others,or even myself but I make sure that I did my best.I just treat this situation as my challenge in life. They learned from me and on the other side I learned from them.Give and Take.

I am grammar conscious because my work is customer-service related. As for the students, i would understand their standards if they pick on their math teacher. In fact, i see so much of myself in them as i remember my teacher in social studies. She would say, "what do you mean that?" Eewwrrr.... Going back to the math teacher, well... if he is really really good then i guess the students can see pass all that.

It's difficult to always have perfect grammar! I'm Cebuana so Filipino and English are my second languages. I try to be grammar conscious both in Filipino and English but sometimes, I would slip and I would just correct myself. the thing is, having a grammatical errors is not a sin. Just continue speaking and writing in your desired language and you're sure to master it.

I have awful writing grammar but great live speaking grammar, I know its weird but I've never been good at writing or spelling or anything that has to do with putting words on paper, but when I'm speaking to people I'm pretty well spoken, I mean I have good speaking diction. you asked if I'm grammar conscious yes I'm conscious but I'm just not a good writer or typist sorry friend. Personally I think members here are too grammar conscious not everyone is an english major or a letter person, this site is about having fun and learning what you can and not scanning for grammar errors good grammar is nice, but it dose not mean a person is smarter or better I applaud those who are blessed with good grammar and writing skills but I think some members need to lighten up on judging others who are not blessed with good writing skills.

I try to be as grammar conscious as i can be. sometimes others will make their opinions based upon how we use our grammar. I have been guilty in the past of scolding others for their poor use of grammar. i guess i just didn't want it to reflect back to me.,

Im really not a grammar conscious person but sometimes, the grammar is so bad, you cringe.Especially if the teacher already has a bad grammar, yet he or she still feels like he or she speaks so eloquently and fluently. That I cannot bear. if students still has to pass an examination before they can enroll in the school, then how come they cannot get good teacher who speaks excellent english then?I believe that they need to hire good english speaking teachers, so that they can teach correct grammar to their students. Would you be convinced that the teacher is teaching you the right english if she or he himself speaks to badly?

I try to write in correct spelling and grammar but sometimes I do make mistakes since English is not my native language. I am only human, I am not perfect! I am sometimes confused with the tenses of words, prepositions and homonyms. Oh well as long I have expressed myself to Mylotters, I am happy. I think Mylot is a good place to practice our English grammar don't you think?

Before i was not really particular about grammar. My only consideration was my pronunciation skill and how i can fool people into thinking that i'm a native speaker. But when i started ESL, that really got me conscious because although the students were not good at speaking, they are very particular with grammar and it would be a great embarrassment on my part if i couldn't do that perfectly while teaching them. So I had to learn how to teach it and since then i pay attention to the grammatical errors being committed by people whenever i speak to them or even read what they have written.

I still remember when I was in my elementary and highschool our teacher always teached us the grammar rule, subject verb agreement etc.I did not pay much attention with that but when I study collenge and took up the secondary education The feeling of conciousness develop, because most of the people that I encountered was really Good in gammar and I admire them.

English is really not our native tongue and you cannot blame someone who's English is not that desirable. Yeah, considering it is not that good to hear if someone would speak in English and has faulty grammar, but still we should consider respect and not laugh at their faces. Who are we to giggle at their despair, when we our selves cannot even muster english that well. cheers...

Hi there!thanks for your message, you have a point that English is not our native tongue, but most of the time people laugh in our mistakes specially in English grammar. What I do now is whenever I speak, I Observe the grammar as well as the pronunciation.but I must admit I did not master it.

It's really a good question, and as English is not my mother tongue, so once I had felt confused about this question for a long time. But now as for me, I consider we should make a difference between oral English and written English. As to written English, as far as I'm concerned we should feel conscious with our grammar, and it is of great significance. But as to oral English, personally, I argue the grammar is not so improtant. As for me, I'm a Chinese, and actually I talk with foreigners frequently, sometimes they just ask me something about the grammar of Chinese, I have to admit I do not know, and we Chinese just say it in this way, no special reason. Language is juat a vehicle through which we can communicate with each other, so it will be all right if we can make ourselves understood and understand what others say. However, as a teacher, especially English teacher, I think he or she should feel conscious with his or her grammar.
