I must say this is one intense film. I young man leaves town in either Colorado or Arizona I forgot which. He goes out to some rock crevaces. RIdes his bike part way and then hikes. Down in these long and deep crevices. I saw the actual person a talk show talking about what happened to him. Then later I saw the actor talking about it. Pretty heroic stuff Boys and Girls! Have you seen it? Would you be able to cut your arm off like he did to survive? Could you drink urine and survive such an ordeal? I don't think I could.

Ugh, not my sort of film at all, but hubby brought it on dvd and really enjoyed it and said it was well made etc. He then watched it again with our eldest son and he enjoyed it as well. We lent the dvd to friends and they said it was very good as well. I don't think i could have watched him cut his arm off and I'm not sure if I could cut my arm off, but then you think differently when faced with situtions like that and thnigs kick in and you do things that you wouldn't normally do.

The cameraman did a good job on the scene where he is cutting at his arm. I like this type of film when I am in the mood because it shows a person who is going to survive regardless. And it is sort of interesting making you think of the situation if you were in it and what you would or wouldn't be able to do.

I went to see this movie at the end of November last year. I don't know if you are aware. The director of the movie is the director of Slumdog Millionaire. I cannot imagine getting into his situation. I feel blessed of what I have, how healthy I am, and how I can overcome some troubles, etc. I hope I would not have to cut any part of my body like that. I also hope that I never have to drink my urine. This movie, based on true story, is actually trying to teach a lesson. One, no matter how adventurous or independent he or she is, should always acknowledge other people like friends and family. The guy was always bad at returning phone calls until this incident. It is like teaching him a lesson. He should have communicated with his family and friends about his intentions. Another suggestion is that he should try to bring a friend whenever he explores outdoor activity like that. He could also be more cautious and careful next time. You and I just never know what harm could happen to us.

Your points are interesting. It is actually a true story and the person it happened to met the actor and showed him his videos. Ones that he rarely shows anyone. And I think it did teach him a grave lesson as life's lesson often do. Thanks for your response.

Wow..sounds like an intense movie. I suppose we never really know what we are capable of until we are put in a position like that. I don't know if I could either.

Me either. Ofcourse the arm was numb and not much blood flow. But drinking urine sounded horrible.

Well I really don't know if I can do it but humans in "survival mode" can do a lot of things that they can't believe that they have done. I have read people surviving years in the ocean because of their urge to survive.

I think if people resine themselves and not panich they are alot more apt to survive. Reality strikes us all differently.

Hello Celticeagle, I have seen that movie, and it was great. I don't know about the drinking part, but the cutting part would have been too tough for me to take. But, like in the movie, his hand had gone half numb due to the stoppage of blood flow to his hand, hence it was easier to cut. It would have been much harder to cut otherwise. I have to give credits to this man for being so brave. He just did the right things to survive, which aren't easy for anyone to do. I am sure, when the hand would get stuck so badly, many would be de-motivated at that instant. Panic is another thing. But yeah, the movie was awesome. I just hope this discussion doesn't turn out to be a spoiler for a few of us who haven't seen the movie, yet.

And breaking that bone. Ugh! Very brave. Kind of a rare situation getting your arm/hand stuck like that.

To have survived that and continue to do the exploration shows that he is a adrenalin junkie. I am not saying that it is bad but it is really something to tell your grandchildren.

I have to say cutting an arm would be a sweet thing to do if that saves my life. The closest thing I've ever gotten to saving myself though had been when I am about to urinate inside a van whose impatient driver do not wish to stop and I had no idea how to piss that no toilet was available. I quickly looked for a mineral water bottle and found one but it contained water. I drank all of it then aligned my birdie to the bottle's hole and that saved my life hahaha.

Your birdie? What a description! Ya, we need to remember his arm was numb and blood flow was cut off. The urination thing was more implied. They didn't show that either. Good movie!

I actually haven't seen the movie yet, but our professor keeps on talking about it and all I can say is damn what a movie! Although the first part of the movie seems boring, the peek is really high and I could not believe that a person can really do that. I mean try cutting your whole arm with just a bread knife (correct me if I/m wrong) thinking of how be broke his bones! I love to see that movie, but I don't know if I can bear to watch it! :D

I didn't see any real gore in the movie. I mean you are perfectly aware of what he is doing but it doesn't really show alot of the gore. And remember his arm had no blood flow and was numb. That probably helps him alot. It really isn't gory.

Just saw it a few days ago and it's utah btw. I must say that it was a very good movie and in the end I felt really good, just happy that he survived; it even gave me goosebumps. lol. If I ever got caught in a situation like this I don't think i would be able to do what Aron Ralston did. Just surviving that long like that would take so much out of you physically and mentally and they show that in the movie. Cutting his arm off was such a bold and crazy thing to do but it was the smartest thing to do too. After the circulation was cut off from his arm for even a short time then it becomes unusable and he would have had to have it amputated anyways. The craziest thing is that I think that I would be able to cut my arm off before I could go 5 days out there like that. Hopefully I'll never really find out though :) -happy myLotting

I thought the area looked more like Utah but thought sure they said one of the others. I don't think I could have either. It was the smartest to be sure. The alternative would be grave and a bummer. Ya, hopefully we will never have to do what he did. I think I want to read the book.
