Hey guys, heard about the news that the Oxford dictionary added text shortcuts and the heart symbol (heart) to their on-line list of definitions? http://www.oed.com/public/latest/latest-update/ With the onset of internet and texting, even the dictionary is evolving. We only used to find words in the dictionary now they have text-speak additions and symbols. What's your say? Do you have other suggestions in mind?

I really think these symbols and short text need to go. Text is not helping our children to communicate properly. Using text and symbols does not benifit them. I've actually seen kid standing in a group and texting each other. They don't say a word. They are really going to have a hard time when the go to the workforce. The certain can not text during an interview. We should take these phones away from the kids during school hours. This would force them to talk to each other. Best Wishes!

Teens this days seem to master the language of texting and internet. In fact in my country, there arise a pop culture called Jejemon. Urban Dictionary describes a Jejemon is a person "who has managed to subvert the English language to the point of incomprehensibility." Instead of shortening the words in SMS, this group lengthens it to the point that you can't understand.

Well better brace yourself! We might see ourselves talking to a new breed of "aliens". We just don't get what they are saying!

Wow, I've never heard of a Jejemon. I'm afraid it could make thing even worse in the dictionary in a few years. Of course, this will only happen when the current teens begin to edit the dictionary. Pend how none of us know what they are talking about. Best Wishes!

That's odd. Now children will learn how to use these abbreviations thinking it can be used in a formal way.

I don't have to be bothered by it right now because my son is only 4. I really wouldn't know what to reason out to him when he gets older and found in the dictionary that it is okay to write FYI on his paper instead of writing the whole word. I'm already expecting what he would say "It is already in the dictionary, why should it not be acceptable?

I'm thinking the same thing. They should at least indicate there that it's a "non-formal way of writing the whole phrase..." or something. That way, they'll understand when and where to use it.

Thanks for reminding me Stowyk! Yes kids are a lot smarter than we are at their age. Maybe it has to do with the technology that is available right now. In our time there is no internet or even cellphones. Yeah, I am also amazed how my son recognized names of fast food stores in my country. Now why am I not surprise their names are the first they recognize.

For that, i think this will be a special case.. When you read it would depend on the sentence meaning and how it was suppose to be use. For example: If you want to say how feel to a special someone then it should be read as " I LOVE YOU " in which the other one when you it a sentence pertaining to an organ in the body. So you say it, " This is my heart ". It dependent to the sentence being provide.. :)

So how will you read it when the symbol is used in a sentence? I Love you or I heart you?

Hi sweet pea: Well that's not the dictionary that I am used. I consider them abreviations, not words. They are representations of whole sentences in some cases or feelings not words for me. Dictionary have to reflect these 'changes' no matter wether they are possitive or not I think. ALVARO

I think the dictionary is adapting to the ways of the current world. Nothing is constant in this world but change. What used to be just words in the dictionary, we now find symbols and acronyms.

I find it a good thing to see the abbreviate words in the dictionary so that some of us who perhaps have never seen them can understand them. I do not feel though that they should be confused with proper English grammar. It is a shame when some utilize it in place of proper lingo because it does not appear to be proper. Hopefully the schools and mature adults can differentiate the difference and not use it where not necessary. I would dislike to see a professionally written letter and or article containing the slang lingo. I would also dislike to see it acceptable as such.

I think that is the result of being exposed to the internet and texting. Things have changed and our time is evolving. I think it is a way of adapting to changes in society. It is just like a law that has gone obsolete and we need to ratify it and make changes base on current practice. Well we can't do anything about it, they started adding this things in the dictionary. I wouldn't be surprised in the future if I see my son writing his composition with all those symbols and emoticons on it.

OMG! I never thought that these abbreviations will be included in an any formal dictionaries ever. It seems quite odd but i guess that's how the world reacts at the today. If we find things funny, we will definitely LOL and for any exclamation we will OMG! (even i started my first word of this discussion with OMG! I didn't once think of writing Oh My God!... But these short forms are fun to be said or written in an informal way...Formally, these would rather sound disrespectful...Adding these words to dictionary might be ok but using them formally won't be cool enough..!

I noticed that too! Even I used the OMG in my topic! I'm preparing myself for the day when my son would give me his writing composition with all of these abbreviations on it. I don't think it is fair for us to write correct spelling on our compositions and they would just use some symbols and abbreviations. Not fair!

Actually, the dictionary has always been evolving, word meaning drifts over time some words come to mean the opposite of their former meaning all the best urban

I think it reflects the changing times. With the onset of the internet and cellphones, it tries to adapt to the new words being used. However, it really gets confusing at first when you see them in the dictionary.

I think it is ok to add these kinds of words to the dictionary if they are kept seperate from the proper words.Perhaps putting these in a seperate dictionary internet slang and abbreviations.

I think that is a nice suggestion to those making the dictionaries. I think it is really confusing to combine words, abbreviations and symbols in just one category.

Hi sweet_pea Finally it happened. A few years back, there was quite a thing happening here wrt the examinations which were not accepting the words from the Internet - somethng like gr8 for great. But students kept repeating the same. So finally they accepted this lingo and no more marks were deducted for spelling mistakes. Good now that the dictionaries too have evolved and accepted this as a part of the language... It will bring about a change in many ways for sure... But I think it will be sad to see the great words getting replaced with the smaller txt versions.

Hi thesids! I guess people in this generation are always on the go, always in a rush. So even the words gets affected by having shortcuts. I am really thinking we might just get back to prehistoric times where words are but symbols. We just got one now in the dictionary with the heart symbol.
