Just read this news out of abscbn: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/04/07/11/ex-dictator-marcos-philippine-hall-heroes
The gist of the story is that the Marcos is showcased in the newly renovated Hall of Heroes.
The reason he's there is because he have received the medal of valor, which is the highest honor that the military can bestow. Brigadier General Jose Mabanta said that his honor was for the combat deeds he did during the Japanese-occupation war, and for what have transpired after.
What's your view on this? Remember that there was a time when people questioned the authenticity of his medals. Do you really think that he deserves to be in the hall of heroes? Do you really think that the award should not be retracted?

In all fairness to Marcos, It seems he deserves the medal of valor. He had been a great president before he became the worst in our history.
But he has also made a lot of cruel things which I think is hard to just forgive and forget. Because of that, I feel that he doesn’t deserve to be in the hall of heroes. He’s not a hero, he just did a lot of good things but what he did in the end is far worse.

The violation of human rights far exceeded the good deeds he allegedly earned in combat. Making him a hero is a degradation of heroism. It is like idolizing Webb and Ivler for the crimes they committed.
But what do we know, there are creatures who like evil. In fact, vampires are so much idolized in the movies and television. Can evil really love. Pardon my language, but this proposal is a lot of bull!

I agree. No matter what good he did, it's already tainted by the monstrosity he did after all the good that he did.
I agree in what you said. It's a degradation of heroism. Before you declare someone a hero, you should consider everything that he's done. Not just some doctored documents saying that he earned a medal of valor

Hello Knicnax,
I think no past heroic records can obviously over taken the worst thing that he did during his presidency. I mean if he get's to be in the Hall of Heroes, then Ducat and Killer tourist Cop Mendoza should have been in the HALL of Heroes too, which i believe it's completely wrong.
It seems that those who were once loyal to marcos are now returning and it's not good at all.

Marcos, using the vast propaganda machine he built during the martial law, perpetuated the myth that he is the greatest guerilla hero during World War 2. Nobody questioned his tall tales during the dark days of martial law, because to do so will mean some of his henchmen showing up and dragging you to some secluded place to be tortured or worse never to be seen again.
Marcos was so arrogant, he portrayed himself as the most decorated soldier in the US Armed Forces. This is a slap in the face to the real American soldiers who fought the fiercest battles in the Pacific and the Europe frontier - many sacrificing their own lives.
Marcos - as was attested by historians and veterans alike - was never a war hero. He was a 3rd lieutenant army clerk - which means he never lead any fighting units. He was incarcerated in 1944 - and was suspected of collaborating with the Japanese soldiers, giving away vital intelligence and names of Filipino guerillas and sympathizers in exchange for leniency. He never fought in Bessang Pass but at that time was stationed in Nueva Ecija. He was said to have spent most of the war at the infirmary - sick or pretending to be sick.
At the end of the war, he became a lawyer and instigated many claims of benefits on behalf of Filipino veterans. He filed a dubious claim of thousands of dollars from the US government for compensation of what he said was his herd of cattle forcibly taken away by US Armed Forces in Mindanao. The US Army investigators concluded his herd of cattle never existed.
Marcos later filed benefits claim on behalf of his so-called guerilla unit, Maharlika. Again, the US government rejected his claim, citing that his group is fraudulent.
At aroung 1985 - Bonifacio Gallego, through the newspaper Malaya - exposed the truth that Marcos' so-called medals are fake and he was never the most decorated US soldiers of WW2. Gallego was arrested, but fortunately People Power ousted Marcos in 1986. Gallego later became a congressman.

This is the real issue here. The award is for his military services, which were so flimsy that it's a real shocker that the AFP still put him in the hall of fame. With all the controversy about his medals, the AFP still decided to honor him. It's sick. A piece of paper in the records of the military is not concrete proof that he did deserve the medal of valor. Being the most powerful man in his time, he really did have the capacity to give himself all the awards and honors that he wants. It's a shame that the AFP didn't bother to check everything out before consifering putting him in the hall of fame

I know some will disagree, but I think he deserves it even though lots of people hate him.Let put into this when the time of president Marcos our country was a tiger country. However in the end it ended up into downfall. Believe me or not people will look only in your mistakes they will forgot the bright side that you made for them. That is why we forgot to gave thanks and recognize them instead we started to hate them and even condemed them. For me,This honor is just the way of recognizing his good deeds. However at the end of this it ended up into miserable downfall of the philippines.

But the medal isn't for anything else but his service for what he did for the economy but for his military services which the authenticity is being questioned.
I agree that most people only see the negative of what people do. I wasn't alive when all these happened so I don't know the full story, all I know is that he did a lot of great things for the economy but when we were already rising, he grabbed everything back. We are in debt now, because of what he did. A lot of the rich now are getting richer everyday because of what he did. A lot of people lost loved ones because of what he did.
What he did can't easily be forgiven. Especially for those who lost loved ones by opposing his dictatorship.
