Goal?

I wondering why we call it Goal in soccer? why not In / Score?
Goal is like something more religious / spirit to me

Goal originally meant something like a boundary or obstruction, from this it came to be used for the end of a race. Then it is easy to see how its use in football came about. The use of goal in religious terms is more recent

because the ball needs to be inside the goal in order to score?? the same goes with basketball. we normally call it 'a basket' because to be able to score you need to shoot the ball in the basket??
i don't know if this makes sense but it is just a wild guess.
