What if you twist it a bit?
Do not do others, because others don't want to do you!
And indifference is even worst than a b!tch.
At least payback means some attention. It's hard to get appreciated, or even validated if one's existence is not recognized.

Lately, this rule had got me thinking.
The way I see it, people are different and what they want might not be the same thing as you want. What works them might not work for you and vice versa. Then the rule doesn't hold good, does it? One would be doing something with good intentions (because that is what they would want for themselves)..but the person at the receiving might not like it one bit.

You are right. Payback can be a b!tch. However, in our multi-cultural society, the definition of 'doing good' can also vary, and that is the confusing bit. In my cosmopolitan city, doing exactly the same thing, could compliment one person and insult another. "As you would want others to do onto you" should be a good guideline, but if you know someone else's "as they would want others to do unto them", then that should take precedence. It can be a confusing world.
