There are so many movies like Armageddon, District 9, Battle Los Angeles, deep impact, etc. where life on earth has been shown to be in danger in one way or the other. Till now these are just works or art, or fiction to be more apt. But are we really safe. Phenomenon like global warming, terrorism may take years to destroy life on earth. But thousands of minds put in their lives to understand them and to protect the earth and life on it from the ill effects of these phenomenon.
But what if there actually is a meteor the size of New York coming at us right now? What if aliens with advanced technology come and attack us? Nothing seems real until it happens. When 500 hundred years ago someone would have said that sitting here, I should be able to talk to my brother 1000 kms apart, he would have been taken as a fool. But today its a reality. So although today my questions may sound unrealistic, but they may turn out to be true. And if they do, are prepared?

Hi, welcome to Mylot. Much of the technology that we enjoy today were featured in the science fiction movies of the past. Look at the works of Jules Vernes, he wrote books like 20,000 leagues under the sea before there were submarines. He wrote many books in the 1800s before the technology existed.

This was evident even in cartoons for example Detective Richard Tracy calling his field agents on a wrist television walkie talkie. Look at the communicators in many of the early Star Trek episodes. Reminds you of a cell phone doesn't it? One of my favorites is the book Big Brother were the Government has everyone under surveillance through computers. They track travel, and even purchases. Does that remind you of technology today? As far as wide scale destruction, is there really any way to prepare besides making peace with the creator?

Thats exactly the point I want to make. Now that you accept that what seems impossible and unthinkable today may be a reality in the future. You agreed to me as far as the possible extinction event was concerned.
Now check this out. A 1000 years back plague was like an extinction event. It would wipe out towns in no time. But today we know how to fight it. Same way today we may feel that a wide scale destruction by an extinction level event like a huge meteor is unavoidable. But if we turn our focus to finding a solution, is there anything that can stop us ?

I don't think there is much we can do to stop something like a gigantic meteor. I think that no matter how advanced the technology, mother nature will find a way to express herself. But just as the black plague you mentioned that decimated the European population helped to advance medical knowledge, past catastrophes may shed light on possible solutions. As long as mankind can reason, I believe there is hope for our future. This reminds me of the latest War of the World movie where mankind was saved by its smallest inhabitants the virus.

Hi there! Yes you are right, what if? We'll I'm from South africa, and the movie district nine was very well documented. However, i dont think i will treat alien infestation as calmly as the people in the movie did, and i will not see it as xenophobia!
I would go camping far away for a very long time!

I wish all of us could go camping, but alas thats not possible. Isn't it time that we stood and started looking at possible problems which are not problems as of today. Problems which when at our doorstep will not give us much time to prepare ourselves. This is the time when we need to prepare.
