Having an "About Me" Section on the Profile

Hi Lotters
I realized that -
1. I have some great friends here
2. I do not have any PTC or MLMs to market.
That made my profile page quite dull.
Taking about friends, what I know about them? For a few, I know their location, age, gender... and of course some idea when we interact on their discussions which gives me a peek into their lives.
I rarely visit any profiles - forced to when I have to send a Freindship Request or know about them like since how long they have gone missing... and yes, on occasions when I am invited to view the profile - okay, I had two invitations till now.
But most of the profiles do not contain any particular stuff like Interests, Hobbies or other aspects that can help in strengthening the Freindship. So I put up an "About Me" Section on the profile... where in I put something that I do in the real world, something that I would not like people here doing to me(like sending me PTC referrals or their Ideas to make money).
Not sure, if it is useful to anyone, but I think we should put up an "About Me" section on our profile... maybe for just a few people like me
Your Views Please(oh yes, you can also provide me if there is something more that I can put on the "About Me" Section)
Cheers,
theSids.

Hi thesids
I saw your profile and very nice I may add. As a US member putting on the profile restrictions about what we do not in PM's will not work. Trust me I have seen many members do this and still others do not read they will PM no matter what. However I find doing that is a good idea because if spammed I could easily say "Please go to my Profile" it will explain it all" lol...
But I see what you are saying about interests and hobbies. Sometime soon I will be re-doing my profile because some of the programs I am in I will be letting go soon. No longer interested in them.
I understand what you mean, we do not have to be so explicit. We can put enough on there to kind of cover the basics. Good idea.

Hi GF
I will fix that profile's About Me section in a couple of days for sure. I agree that the PM part will not have a real-time effect but yes, it can shorten up the conversation and I hope a couple will not send such requests.
But yes, what is more effective and helpful is the other information that makes up what we are like hobbies, extra activities etc that will help in making the only-discussions based relationships last longer and also strengthen the friendship.

@suny absolutely I can help and wonder if you hit the enter key after putting the html codes??
Also what works for me is that if you put
and then hit enter it takes fine. But do not put spaces in between the way I did here. Reason why I put spaces is that in the comment boxes it will not allow for html coding.
Any problems we can go back and forth on email and or FB chat??
@thesids I will be looking forward to seeing your updated profile and I like what owlwings said below.

If you know a little HTML, you can very easily put an 'About Me' section in your HTML sortie. GoAskAlice has done this, as you can see here: http://www.mylot.com/GoAskAlice
I tend to agree, however, that a feature which was simpler to use (as another sortie) where one could type something about oneself and didn't need to know HTML to format it and display it would be a nice idea.

Hi owlwings
Yup, I saw that when I was trying to contact and make GAA a FR for my earlier discussion and his opinion. That gave me the hint and I had this About Me done quite early.
The usage of HTML is quite easy but for those who are not having any idea (I believe many around are no way related to HTML), might find it quite a tedious task.
Despite my being a Web Programmer I completely agree to what you opine - GAA should make it more easy (and let is remain a non-compulsive thing as it is right now) - given the technology now, it becomes quite easy and even a kid can do the settings if things are placed for getting done easily
A great response

Hello dear brother,
I do visit profiles if anybody sends a request to me. Sometimes while writing responses, I may need their information to write a reply (not always, but depends) then I should visit. Nothing is pulling me backward to visit a profile of any member here. I have seen that one person’s profile who written about the person, objectives, interests etc. So it is not a big issue, you can provide all the details in your profile. However, if the ‘about me’ section is compulsory then also I don’t want to write anything there in my profile. If anybody wanted to know about me, he/she should become a good friend of me. I mean no details for strangers.

Hi Sree Didi
Yes, that is quite correct and I respect your views.
I am lucky that we share our email ids. So we stay connected in other ways away from MyLot. But, if we were not so close... ok, I was and not you. In that case? If you were away, I would have been on your profile only to find out - last logged in xx days ago... I would have been worried and thinking what not... I am sure when you would have returned and found that someone was worried you would be unhappy too about this.
It is upto us what and how much we want to share with all...

Holla seeds.,
The same thing hit across my mind for a long time. There is a provision for making friends but nothing to let them know about you. If there were a section like 'about me' it would be nice to share more openly and candidly.
Here this is too vague. We have friends bit do not know where they are from and what interest they have and how they take up life and other things.
Nice discussion.

Hi Rajib
So I read your mind Good that you agree with my views and think it will help. I have been to your profile and yes, it is a great one.
I will update some more on this "About me" section this week and hope that by the next week, I will have amy things up there which would help at least a few new Friends-to-be to know what I am and maybe my friend set would increase and will have some more great friends...
PS. I hope you would hae it implemented too.

Hi Sid,
Wow! You really know your way around myLot! :O)
I'll consider adding that section, Sid.
What I've been trying to add for the longest was a blog on myLot. I see the tab, but I can't seem to make it work. Part of why I want to do this is that I can't leave links to my other blogs in a reply, like this one.
I may have to tap you for help with putting up an About Me section. However, I do feel that the interests and goals that are listed tell us about each other.
Anyway, I think your suggestion is a fine contribution to myLot, Sid! :D
Sunshine & Blessings,
Giovani

Hi gsaintiny
I too had added my blog here when I started out... but till now nothing much has happened. But yes, we can add a link to our blog on the profile and also if we are witing up an HTML section on the Profile, we can always add links and even a small piece of text to go with the blog.
And of course, I would be happy to assit you with that About Me section

Hello my dear friend!
Am sure you're gonna ask why am I here, lol! Well, hubby and my kids are upstairs resting so I thought of logging in to mylot for minutes, hehe!
Honestly Sids,I'm not fond of putting anything in an "about me" section as I don't find myself interesting, lol! I just usually put I'm a mom of two kids and happily married, though I usually want to read something "about me" to others, weird?! Maybe because I don't have anything to write about me that would somehow interest the reader, hehe!
Miss you friend! Have to go! Take care!

Hi funnysis
That is great. If you re looking for some ideas, you can find some on page one and yes, on page 3, there is Ms. Hatley's response which shows that so many things can be written about...
And me is quite confused now, which options to I go with... There are so many now

Hi Bhai! I think when you go to a person's profile and all you see is how to make money sites,it makes me think they are only out fore money! I think the about me section is a good idea! But sadly many will be either too shy or too cautious to fill it out. I know if I had to fill one out a couple years back I wouldn't have anything to say. And I would be too shy to say Anything!

Hi Sid...
sorry i am late in responding..
that is a good idea. i guess that we need make a picture about our personality like i am happy in making new friends or i am a sensitive person.
then we can adjust our comments or response to someone's discussion by her personalty

I think that is a great idea! I would like to have an about me section on mine too. I haven't got any banners on my page either..I have posted a few pictures of me and my children though. I think I even have a couple of pictures on there of one of my favorite places...it is a waterfall here that is pretty close. I haven't updated them in forever though. I should do that.
Great idea thesids! I can't wait to see it.

Hi JenInTN
A waterfall picture sounds lovely... I thik it will be great idea to put up a few pictures on my proflie page too but I will have to wait as I do not have good pictures on the digital version, I have them on the traditional photo kind of. Maybe till I get a few scanned or even when I get either a digital camera or a Handset with the feature.
I would be happy to know more about you on your profile

hello dear sids
This reminds me of the other social site "Orkut" i am sure you are familiar with this site dear bhai.
In there you can write everything about you,and everything that you want to write.
Yes,i think it's a good idea to know a little information about each mylotter.
Anyway, have a great weekend again dear brother

Orkut and Mylot not far different dear bhai.
Community in Orkut also gives you opportunity to inter-act with others.
Mylot also has photo section,i just don't know how many pictures we are allowed to upload in our profile, because in Orkut i uploaded a thousand
The big difference that i consider is,the payment.
So,you also had an Orkut acct huh

Hi Jai Didi
Orkut was better. MyLot and Orkut are quite different. Orkut to me seemed quite similar to FB and I could not make much out of it...
I see an opportunity to get closer with people around and so I thought why not put this
Have a great weekend didi

I guess I should be thinking about an "about me" section, I am trying to make money. Its a good idea and I might just copy yours and paste it to my profile..haha just joking!
BTW your profile do not make you seem nice, you know the warning not to send you promotions. It is another good idea though. It will save the time for those who thought of sending you some.
What does DND stand for?
I am glad that i know a tiny teeny weeny bit about you thru your discussions and rsponses. I think you are opposite to what I thought of you in your profile, you seem fierce!

Hi MK
You are quite right... I look likea fierce person on my profile as the two points you mention - I had put them up after I was hurt by a few MyLot people whom I felt were friends. I was shocked and so thought of putting those... But yes, I am getting something pleasant and new for my About Me Section and so these will be either removed or there will be pleasantries too
The DND implies- Do Not Disturb. It is because of someone telling me to stay away from her discussions because she did not like the way I respond. I was hurt and upset because this was mentioned in public when she could have sent the same via a PM and not made it public. I had a discussion on that one - http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2487810.aspx
I will be editing my Amout Me soon

I wanted to write, 'dun bother' as dun bother to change your about me section because to me it does not matter and it shouldnt matter to those who knows you. But I checked and you have and I think its great.
About your condition, I beleive in God and I think you have what you have because you are special. Most people think its better to be 'normal' but to me its only those special ones who are in special conditions. Take care!

You must have a self-confident to make yourself more representative, more popular and more successfully.
However, you need to have times to grow your self-confident.
Never under estimate your personal capability.
You should always say, " Yes, I Can."
ha! ha! ha!
This is really a good slogan to motivate yourself.

You are always free to put what you like on your profile, but there is already an interests section that we fill out. It is to the left, under your friends. "About me" is also a fine place to request they not spam you, but many of them do not pay attention to it. I know this because several of my friends have posted this on their profile and it does not seem to stop anyone from spamming them. I visit profiles, sometimes, when there are friendship requests, and I almost always approve them, even when there is nothing on the profile, no discussions or activities. They usually have friends and interests, and so I go ahead and accept them.

Hi GG
Yes dear, that is true. I did put one such request on this About me section but it seems that those who want to send will never care to read.
But I had some ugly experiences with people sending out the FRs without any prior interaction... and so I normally avoid accepting the FRs from such people...

Hi AmbiePam
Unfortunately, MyLot has also to cater to those who prefer to be anonymous and this is why MyLot has not and I think will not implement this feature as a compulsion. As it is more of a personal choice, it is all upto us - how far we want to get open to our friends.

hi thesids thats a great idea. I would like to see it implemented
on our profiles. I would l ike to put how I worked for years as
a nurses aid and then the last 23 years I worked in the Tustin Library.
I had two children, now my son is 51.we lost our little girl when she waws eight. she would have been fifty had she lived. I love to collect rocks, and beanie babies, and i love to write fiction and poetry. Somehow I should put those on my own profile. great idea

Hello Thesids,
You know what's curious? I thought that this discussion of yours will raise the number of visits to your profile. But no! You have only 17 visits today.
OK what's curious about this, you may ask?
You know what? You have already got 20 responses and only 17 visits to your profile. This means that at least 4 of your respondents were not curious to read your "about me" section.
(I admit I was one curious respondent.)
I think it is a good idea to have such a section into our profiles. As nobody tells us what to write in our profiles, we can write whatever we want, can't we?
I could create an "about me" section into my profile, as the banners I have now haven't brought me any referral.

Hello Sid,
How are you?
Initially I was also puzzled as to how to decorate my profile page. I just added my photos and an HTML of Holi and rearranged the items. Yes, we can create the "About me" section there and in fact we all should create it since it is a social networking site and everyone at least our friends should know our likes and dislikes. I am not sure why "About me" is not there by default but you have very well pointed out that it is a must for sites like this where we make friends and discuss with them over any matter serious or funny. I appreciate your idea and will also include this section in my profile also.

Hi Nishant
It is always so great a feeling to have your response on my discussion
Thanks for appreciating the idea. Mylot knows that people on the internet are in search of anonimity. And even you would have noticed, a few MyLotters are great but do not have an avatar or even do not mention their age or gender or even place/location. They have their reasons and I respect their views and so does MyLot. This is why it is not a compulsion.
I am quite an open person and I know a few vould consider my ideas as pure childishness, but what to do, I love my friends, want to share with them... So I thought of puttingup some more info about me... Only hope that MyLot doesnt object me putting up all that there.
