My roommate's dog is fat, very fat. My roommate wonders why she's so fat, but simply doesn't clue into the fact that he's the one at fault for it.
You want to know what she eats?
Not dog kibble. She rarely touches it. So what does she eat?
Bones, cooked, from pretty much any animal.
Fried spaghetti.
Fried potatoes
Hot dogs
Ice cream.
She eats nothing but human food. He doesn't walk her either. It's no wonder she's so fat.
I have to admit, she seems pretty healthy for a 7 year old dog that eats nothing but crap.

Oh that isn't good for his dog, he needs to feed her a good quality dog food and only certain people food occasionally..Depending on the breed of the dog, seven may not be as old as you think, or you can't really see how much healthier she can be if given the right food and exercise..

But he doesn't care, so he wont feed her properly.
She's a mixed Pom/Shih tsu, at least 22lbs or more now.

And she weighs 22 pounds??? Oh, that is bad. I saw a shih tsu at the groomers last week, he probably didn't weight too much over 10- 15 pounds!!!!!

My dog is fat. When I got her she was fat. Trying to get the weight off is impossible. My vet told me to feed her nothing but dog food, which I try to do. I will admit I give in to those big brown eyes a little, but try very hard to give her very little people food. Yet she still keeps the weight on. I take her for long walk her at least twice a day and even get her to run by letting the other dogs run with her.

Amazing that She's healthy. I wonder if feeding crap to an animal is a form of abuse. If I were you, I'd talk to animal control.

This is really sad. That breed of dog should not be that bad and he's only hurting her in the long run. Trust me, I feed my dogs plently of table scraps but only occasionally and they still get their regular dog food. Plus I walk them and my house is big enough that they get exercise running around the house. Dogs can get all the same diseases that we can get from being obese.. diabetes, heart problems, etc. You might want to inform him of that.
Some times you just can't change people though.

Your roommate needs to understand that owning a dog is not owning a piece of property, but instead is having a responsibility to a living being that depends on him. Doing everything you can to maintain the health of your pet is a responsibility that you sign up for when you get a pet, and they need to live up to it by feeding the dog a proper diet and taking them for regular walks. I have seen pets pass suddenly from undetected medical conditions, and I would hate for that to happen to your roommates dog, so he needs to get his act together and take better care of his dog.

Does he even try to by the dog regular dog food? If not what else can you really do? Is not your dog and you keep stating that he just doesnt care and he is not going to change. You cant do much but try to help the dog with some regular food when you can and keep telling your room mate the dangers of what he is doing but if he does not stop then there is not much you can do. What a shame poor dog

i think it's fine for dogs to eat human food, the thing is that they also need exercise, just like anyone does...so tell your roommate that the dog needs that. i had a dog who loves eating human food than their typical food, but i take her for a walk at least 3x a week
