It is circumcision time!

My daughter is peeved. One of her friends cannot join the after semester gimmick. Gimmick is actually trying out a new restaurant in a new mall. The friend is prohibited to get out of the house because her brother had just been circumcised. And to empathize with kid brother, every member of the family was put into house arrest! Well, I suppose they have to postpone the gimmick. It is a long summer vacation anyway. But the circumcision has to be done at the onset of summer, so the little boys can join the pool/beach family outings later, when the searing summer heat is upon us.

Are you serious? In your country they do circumcisons in the spring? Why do boys have to go through this? I think it is unnecessary and painful on little boys! I also don't like that doctors are making extra money off little boys and their parents! It is criminal!

Hi blue, it is the onset of summer in the Philippines. The boys who get circumcised are usually between ten to thirteen years old. We do have local health clinics where doctors conduct circumcision for free. The young boys in the provinces, though, follow the tradition of applying crunched guava leaves after circumcision to lessen the pain and to prevent bacteria from sipping in. I believe all Filipino males are circumcised, unless one negates me here that he is not! JOKE!

I agree with blue65packer.I too believe it is unnecessary- we may as well be removing our finger and toe nails while we are at it....

Oh wiggles, that is gross. The skin is different from nails. And that flesh must be removed for hygienic reasons actually...

wiggles, I know that I shouldn't push this but we do cut our nails. Do not get angry with me, please, but boys do say here that the circumcision isn't just for hygienic purposes but for aesthetic as well. And the boys brag about theirs having a German cut! There was another boy who said his is a triple bypass!

It is basically the same thing- nails get dirt and such underneath them and whatnot... The whole hygienic thing is a myth. I am living proof of that :D If it naturally grew on you, it was probably meant to be there...

I´ve have seen on many blogs, you call it "operation tuli". It´s very interesting to see different cultures about male circumcision. I think must be some dates than young children are scared, and the girls.....will have fun, lol.

Oh yes, circumcision is a well publicized summer date with our young boys. The dads and the boys are so fuzzy about having a German cut.

Oh yes! i saw this feature this morning at GMA channel..but it was "disturbing" for me. Have you seen it? they feature those kids circumcised, there is nothing with it but what is wrong is the footage. Their news caster ( i do not know her name, it was just this morning that i tuned in to GMA) went inside the operating room, i believe it was the soldiers who initiated this operation tuli and then she went inside to interview those kids but i thought those who finished, but the footage was those kids "during" the circumcision time! yes, while she was interviewing the soldier what is showing is the kids who are having their "tuli" and their part is even shown while the doctors where stitching it..it is disturbing for me because it is so clear! i do not know how you will react to it but well it was disturbing for me plus if i am the parent of that kid, i would also feel bad plus the kid might be ashamed!

I did not see the news. But if the faces of the children were shown, that might be a violation of children's rights. News reporting, in such a case as this (medical), must be conducted with utmost care.

Yes, they should understand the situation, circumcision is a really painful thing, especially for a little kid. It's only for a few days anyway, make your daughter understand... Gimmicks can wait.

The young people do not tell all, I have to strain my ears... Shindig is the young people's new term for party. These children create a language parents do not understand. But shindig is a proper word. That much I would commend these kids...

some of our neighors' son already gone circumcision. and my son is scheduled next week because my brother will have a vacation this week from singapore, and we will have fun first before we bring my son to the doctor. it's part of our culture, for the boys to be circumcised =) it's like having a menstruation for the girls. its just that circumcision is done only once, unlike having a monthly period that girls 'suffer' monthly for so many years =D

Get your son some book or game which would keep his mind off the pain. Maybe time to play chess with him, or games of the generals.

My older son needs a circumcision for medical reasons. He is so tied up with his classes that we are waiting for things to slow down before we get it done. But we wouldn't restrict the movements of the rest of the family when he would be home after the circumcision. But we'd make sure that atleast one of us (his dad or me) would be home with him if he needs anything. It wouldn't be fair on the little one to be stuck at home just because his older brother has been circumcised. But seeing the way things are, we will probably wait till AFTER summer to get it done. He loves the pool and would definitely miss being in the pool if we got it done during the summer...and considering that the pool is unusable most part of the year (due to the cold), I wouldn't want him to miss it.

I am glad that you are setting the welfare of your children right. I don't think actually that circumcision must be hastened. My daughter though, who is training at the hospital, was requested by a 15 year old lad to leave because he does not want any one to see he is being circumcised. I think younger boys take circumcision in stride than older boys...

Circumcision before puberty has, through time, become a right of passage. The boys sort of feel that, once circumcised, they can walk with men... But binggaling, I never had my daughters' ears pierced. I felt then, when they were born, that although I am the mom, their body is theirs. I told them that it is all right with me if they have their ears pierced. Neither is interested.

Around here, little boys are typically circumsized when they are very small. In fact, Paul was circumsized before he was even twenty-four hours old. I could tell that it was something painful for his tiny little body, so I can only begin to imagine what it would be like for someone that was older. I would think that the better time to do this would be in the fall though because then there would be more time for it to heal before it would possibly be exposed to things that would cause infections.

doorannmwin, we do not have four seasons in the Philippines. We lie in the tropic and so we only have dry and wet seasons. It is summer vacation anyway, that is how we call the long break from school. So the wounds heal fast enough during summer. Who is Paul?

well, you can tell your daughter that they can be together at the friend's house and plan for an alternative recreational activity instead of going out to the mall. i'm glad to be a girl that i don't need to go through any circumcision.

IT's a good thing for all guys and man to go through that because it's more hygienic that way. It's better to do it when they are young, so that they need not experience the pain and suffering when they are older, with thicker skin. It's also quite embarassing as well right? Muslims have to do it too, because it's part of their religious requirements.

In the Philippines, if a man has not been circumcised and he is at age, he becomes the butt of jokes. Also accounts for a rather embarrassing situation, when one has to be circumcised and the male organ is all huge already and not small like a boy's. wiggles, of course we are all entitled to our own beliefs. I am just explaining how it is here in the Philippines.

I remember the time when my son was circumcised, there is this saying that when you peep and see his freshly operated below,he will get a tomato-shaped masculinity. I did not mind that saying, when my son was asleep, I kept pouring Iodine solution onto it so that to heal fast and it did work.My son was only 12 when he underwent the summer big event for every boys.

Summer is full of fun, and your right time for the youngster to be circumcised, my eldest son circumcised when he was 10 1/2 years old, it was done by a surgeon of course. His papa is not around so I was accompanied him, I am the one nervous when it was done by a competent doctor in our place. For the knowledge of all, circumcision is done primarily for hygienic purposes, studies have shown that uncircumcised men as well as women who have uncircumcised partners are more prone to cancer of the reproductive organs.

I would also be afraid if I have a son who would undergo circumcision. I have a friend I bumped into four years ago, and I asked him why he looked apprehensive. He said that his twins are being circumcised, and he is praying that everything goes well. I didn't know there is a relation of uncircumcised organs to cancer. That was probably the discussion I heard long ago about the health benefits of circumcision. Thanks for informing us here.

We are in the same place eileenleyva that's why i can imagine also what you are trying to elaborate. I remember when i was circumcised, I think i'm in the age of seven or eight at that time and during the circumcision I thought i'm gonna die "OooOucHHh!" so painful, crying and screaming for almost 30 mins. Hahaha. And I was circumcised by the free service of the government in our town, at that time we are so bored because we cannot do the things we want to do. We want to jump, ride a bicycle and play but we can't. Good thing I'm done in that compulsory matter, haha! thanks God because it's just once and will not be happen again. haha! Best regards to you.

I was circumcised at 17 yers old here in Spain, during summer too. In summer you can be at home, and so dot no make you embarrasing questions, lol. Eileenleyva are right when she says males still feel the pain when recollet the moment and go into frenzy when talk about that, lol. Here is different, but feelings are the same.

Ouchhhh! That painful, huh! You still feel it when you recollect the moment? My male friends go into frenzy when they get to talk about that brief moment of time in their lives! And they torture talk the boys who yet have to be circumcised. No mercy for the ones wearing the skirt! Gosh! Men! Hmmpf!

How perfectly awful! The time for circumcision is right after birth when the child is still in the hospital and can get proper aftercare. Also in Western Countries there is a lot of debate about the usefulness of this procedure. Many Christians no longer subject their boys to this procedure and certainly not at age 10 to 13. Jews and Moslems still adhere to this custom because of their religion but again it is done 2 few days after birth.

I remember that sometime in my youth, there was a whole lot of discussion about what age is circumcision most advisable. The doctors suggested pre-teen circumcision as best.

jill, Filipinos are very family oriented. Family comes before friends. In the case of my daughter's friend's brother, he needed support, because he was in a painful condition. Who must be there to cheer him up? Family. Though they would laugh, the kid brother knows that everyone loves him and are also concerned about his situation. And the friends... they understood, and they did set another date.

What are you implying here. Summer time is here, and it is hot out there. Those youngsters might enjoy the summer vacation, no matter boy or girl out there. They might get drunk, and they might do something that they would like to do all the time. So, when you are mentioning about kid brother has to do circumcised, is there another meaning of it? Safety come first?

yes! summer time is circumcision time and that is how we do it here in the Philippines were summer time has no classes and so boys will be able to heal their wounds haha :) we also had this operation tuli at the hospital where I am working and it is fun to see those boys wearing very loose shirts. I think its a nice concept of the family of the friend of your daughter. They are not able to go out until the kid brother is ok. This comes to mind the saying: one for all and all for one :). As you said, its a long summer anyway, they still would have time :)

katrina, I am glad I am female. If I was a boy and asked to wear a skirt and asked to fall in line, I would die. Say, it was nothing like the Prince of Wales wearing a checkered skirt and off to some rendezvous in Scotland. It was a trip to the clinic for some skin splicing. And family, yes, though I know that the siblings are really sporting smiles, they love their brother enough to bear the long wait with him.
