Dear All,
The 2011 World Cup that just got over had 49 matches in all. Out of that, about 20 odd matches featured teams which were minnows. Out of these matches, we can safely say that about 18 of them were quite boring. The England vs Ireland match was a classic, And so was England vs Bangladesh. So apart from these two matches the results were pretty much predictable, and hence the cricket played was boring. I say boring because, the minnows apart from Ireland and Netherlands, were not even able to put up fight against their big opponents. There were not many people watching these games either. All these matches did, was to bring down the viewership. As a result of this the ICC has taken the decision that only 10 teams will be participating for the 2015 World Cup scheduled to be held in Australia.
Now there are two sides to this decision. The good side to this decision is that, one sided matches featuring the minnows and other teams will be eliminated. The matches played will be of better standard. And "MOST IMPORTANTLY", the World Cup will be shorter.
But the down side is that good up coming teams like Ireland and Nether lands will not be playing. It is a pity after performing well in the world cups they have played, they get shunned out. It is unfortunate that they happened to be part of the collateral damage. I am completely for the decision that 10 of the best teams should play in a world cup to have the best matches possible. But teams like Zimbabwe, Kenya and even for the matter Bangladesh have not been performing to the standards required. There should be some kind of a selection committee to choose the best ten teams. ICC should make it in such a way that the top 8 ranked teams are selected for the World Cup as default and the rest of the teams have to fight for the last two positions.
World Cups should not feature all the teams, but the best teams playing. I hope that the ICC considers a better way of choosing teams, and I mean the best teams....!!! Giving opportunity to the new comers will only inspire them and may be pushing out teams like Zimbabwe and Kenya will only help the future of ODI cricket. This will tell the teams to not take things for granted.

I think they have made a right decision.I agree ireland is a good team but netherlands isnt. The only match netherland played well was in the match against england. In wc 2011 a team needed to win just 3 matches to get the wc,that is quarter, semi and final. It was tooo easy for test playing teams to reach the quarter final with an exception of bangladesh. That means a team is just 3 matches away from victory ,right from the beginning of the tournament.I dont think wc is the place for canada and other minnows to play.

Dear Ravi,
Well I just hope that the ICC comes out with a good screening process to find out the best ten teams. Let it be the big teams or the minnows...!!!!

Ravi
i say it that format that make all so
but i believe this would be unfair to say the team play only 3 game to win
i like the super six format it was where all team get chances and decision is not based on only one match

I think ICC had done well to annouce that but unfortunately we didn't see good team here even i say west indies are as poor as those minows what lack is collection of better players in team.
Last you said a good make up of the world cup 8 best teams and rest two fight for the 9th and 10 th place .
What to say about ireland they have some good hitting players but they need to have good 11 players not 1 or 2
Well netherland is not comparable ti ireland they are outclass

Dear Rajeev,
Ireland is a good team. Yes, they are not a world class team yet. This is because some Irish players have gone on to play for England due to lack of international exposure. Eoin Morgan, who currently plays for England used to play for Ireland. Now imagine a couple more players of that caliber. Trust me, it is not that difficult to make the Irish team a better one.
All I am saying is, I agree to the decision of playing only 10 teams. But, excluding all of the minnows is not fair either. Even FIFA provides chances for their best minnow teams. They have a qualifying tournament and the best two or three teams end up competing in the world cup. It is high time ICC did something like that. And plus there are teams like Kenya, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and for that matter West Indies, who are not performing to their standards.
May be kicking out some of the teams who have not been performing well and giving chances to deserving new comers would not be such a bad idea.

I think the removal of the minnows from the World Cup was a right move. I do not think a World cup is a place to groom the minnows. But having said that, the last two qualifiers should have been chosen from 2 bottom sides from the regular sides and 2 top sides from the associates. But this move was vetoed by Bangladesh and Zimbabwe which is why they are now directly in there for the next world cup.
Cheers!

I think it is the right decision. Cricket can be played by 20 countries whereas over 200 countries can play football. Do they get chance to play Football cup ? I think it is the best to get qualied for the world cip events which ICC will apply from 2019 world cups. If Ireland can qualify then will get chance, no one can stop them. These countries like Netherland, Ireland, Canada, Bermuda, UAE and some other countries are seen only in ICC World Cups. They should prove their worth. They must qualify, appearing in the World Cup deosn't mean to win one or two matches or causing one or more upsets. You must be qualified enough to win the cup. What happens in Football world cup ? The teams who qualify are most of them are eligable for winning it. There are more than 200 countries but 32 get qualified. That means best 32 teams. It deosn't matter if some good and wellknown team fails to qualify. It is their fault. Sports is about winning and losses and everyone gets equal chances. Those who gets benefits means they achieved it earlier and getting some discounts only. Best teams must qualify only. If India or Australia fails to qualify in 2019 and Ireland or some minor team get that chance, no one can question or put controversies because all are given equal chances. Winning or Losing is completely your things. None other are involved in it except your opponents.

One and a half month for a tournament is really to long a period and need to be trimmed down to less than a month. The decision of I.C.C. to trim down the number of teams participating in the tournament is therefore a welcome move. At the same time to keep all the associate teams out of the tournament is not just for them. It would be appropriate therefore to have a qualifying tournament to decide the last 4 or five teams participating in the tournament. This will mean automatic qualification for first five or six teams standing in the tournament and rest test playing countries along with all associate members should fight it out for the remaining slots in the world cup. This will ensure that only the beat teams will enter the finals of the world cup. This qualification procedure is there in all other games and it is high time it is included for cricket. It is not only Ireland and Netherlands that vie for the slot among the elite, Afghanistan is also knocking at the door for the same. Afghanistan cricket has developed in leaps and bounds in last few years.
